Phase behaviour of binary mixtures of diamagnetic colloidal platelets in an external magnetic field
Using fundamental measure density functional theory we investigate
paranematic-nematic and nematic-nematic phase coexistence in binary mixtures of
circular platelets with vanishing thicknesses. An external magnetic field
induces uniaxial alignment and acts on the platelets with a strength that is
taken to scale with the platelet area. At particle diameter ratio lambda=1.5
the system displays paranematic-nematic coexistence. For lambda=2, demixing
into two nematic states with different compositions also occurs, between an
upper critical point and a paranematic-nematic-nematic triple point. Increasing
the field strength leads to shrinking of the coexistence regions. At high
enough field strength a closed loop of immiscibility is induced and phase
coexistence vanishes at a double critical point above which the system is
homogeneously nematic. For lambda=2.5, besides paranematic-nematic coexistence,
there is nematic-nematic coexistence which persists and hence does not end in a
critical point. The partial orientational order parameters along the binodals
vary strongly with composition and connect smoothly for each species when
closed loops of immiscibility are present in the corresponding phase diagram.Comment: 9 pages, to appear in J.Phys:Condensed Matte
Prediction of low-keV monochromatic images from polyenergetic CT scans for improved automatic detection of pulmonary embolism
Detector-based spectral computed tomography is a recent dual-energy CT (DECT)
technology that offers the possibility of obtaining spectral information. From
this spectral data, different types of images can be derived, amongst others
virtual monoenergetic (monoE) images. MonoE images potentially exhibit
decreased artifacts, improve contrast, and overall contain lower noise values,
making them ideal candidates for better delineation and thus improved
diagnostic accuracy of vascular abnormalities.
In this paper, we are training convolutional neural networks~(CNN) that can
emulate the generation of monoE images from conventional single energy CT
acquisitions. For this task, we investigate several commonly used
image-translation methods. We demonstrate that these methods while creating
visually similar outputs, lead to a poorer performance when used for automatic
classification of pulmonary embolism (PE). We expand on these methods through
the use of a multi-task optimization approach, under which the networks achieve
improved classification as well as generation results, as reflected by PSNR and
SSIM scores. Further, evaluating our proposed framework on a subset of the
RSNA-PE challenge data set shows that we are able to improve the Area under the
Receiver Operating Characteristic curve (AuROC) in comparison to a na\"ive
classification approach from 0.8142 to 0.8420.Comment: 4 pages, ISBI 202
Defining flexibility of assembly workstations through the underlying dimensions and impacting drivers
The concept of mass customization is becoming increasingly important for manufacturers of assembled products. As a result, manufacturers face a high variety of products, small batch sizes and frequent changeovers. To cope with these challenges, an appropriate level of flexibility of the assembly system is required. A methodology for quantifying the flexibility level of assembly workstations could help to evaluate (and improve) this flexibility level at all times. That flexibility model could even be integrated into the standard workstation design process. Despite the general consensus among researchers that manufacturing flexibility is a multi-dimensional concept, there is still no consensus on its different dimensions. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) shows that many similarities can be found in the multitude of flexibility dimensions. Through a series of interactive company workshops, we achieved to reduce them to a shortlist of 9 flexibility dimensions applicable to an assembly workstation. In addition, a first step was taken to construct a causal model of these flexibility dimensions and their determining factors, the so called drivers, through the Interpretive Structural Modelling (ISM) approach. In the next phase, a driver scoring mechanism will be initiated to achieve an overall assembly workstation flexibility assessment based on the scoring of drivers depending on the workstation design

(DIPF/Orig.)The anthology presents current approaches to digitally supported professional learning. The articles provide insights into the dynamic development of the interfaces between gainful employment and vocational training and further education in the context of digitization of work and learning aids. The volume is thus connected to the publication “Berufsbildung am Bau digital” (edited by Bernd Mahrin and Johannes Meyser), which was published in 2019 by the University Press of the Technische Universität Berlin. The first chapter discusses fundamental didactic questions about digitally supported learning and working, including the framework conditions. The second chapter picks contributions on capacity development, standards, and digital tools out as central themes. The third chapter is dedicated to concrete specific solutions with strong practical relevance and high transfer potential for digitized work and learning in the construction sector and in the metal sector. The final fourth chapter presents comprehensive and freely accessible online offers such as a media pool for educational purposes, a learning media database and a hybrid learning system with a virtual 3D building model. The book was created as part of the DigiBAU project - digital vocational learning and working in the field of construction - funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the European Social Fund.
