Cytokinin Acts through the Auxin Influx Carrier AUX1 to Regulate Cell Elongation in the Root
Hormonal interactions are crucial for plant development. In Arabidopsis, cytokinins inhibit root growth through effects on cell proliferation and cell elongation. Here, we define key mechanistic elements in a regulatory network by which cytokinin inhibits root cell elongation in concert with the hormones auxin and ethylene. The auxin importer AUX1 functions as a positive regulator of cytokinin responses in the root; mutation of AUX1 specifically affects the ability of cytokinin to inhibit cell elongation but not cell proliferation. AUX1 is required for cytokinin-dependent changes of auxin activity in the lateral root cap associated with the control of cell elongation. Cytokinin regulates root cell elongation through ethylene-dependent and -independent mechanisms, both hormonal signals converging on AUX1 as a regulatory hub. An autoregulatory circuit is identified involving the control of ARR10 and AUX1 expression by cytokinin and auxin, this circuit potentially functioning as an oscillator to integrate the effects of these two hormones. Taken together, our results uncover several regulatory circuits controlling interactions of cytokinin with auxin and ethylene, and support a model in which cytokinin regulates shootward auxin transport to control cell elongation and root growth
Revised Stellar Properties of Kepler Targets for the Quarter 1-16 Transit Detection Run
We present revised properties for 196,468 stars observed by the NASA Kepler
Mission and used in the analysis of Quarter 1-16 (Q1-Q16) data to detect and
characterize transiting exoplanets. The catalog is based on a compilation of
literature values for atmospheric properties (temperature, surface gravity, and
metallicity) derived from different observational techniques (photometry,
spectroscopy, asteroseismology, and exoplanet transits), which were then
homogeneously fitted to a grid of Dartmouth stellar isochrones. We use
broadband photometry and asteroseismology to characterize 11,532 Kepler targets
which were previously unclassified in the Kepler Input Catalog (KIC). We report
the detection of oscillations in 2,762 of these targets, classifying them as
giant stars and increasing the number of known oscillating giant stars observed
by Kepler by ~20% to a total of ~15,500 stars. Typical uncertainties in derived
radii and masses are ~40% and ~20%, respectively, for stars with photometric
constraints only, and 5-15% and ~10% for stars based on spectroscopy and/or
asteroseismology, although these uncertainties vary strongly with spectral type
and luminosity class. A comparison with the Q1-Q12 catalog shows a systematic
decrease in radii for M dwarfs, while radii for K dwarfs decrease or increase
depending on the Q1-Q12 provenance (KIC or Yonsei-Yale isochrones). Radii of
F-G dwarfs are on average unchanged, with the exception of newly identified
giants. The Q1-Q16 star properties catalog is a first step towards an improved

Relationship between X-ray and ultraviolet emission of flares from dMe stars observed by XMM-Newton
We present simultaneous ultraviolet and X-ray observations of the dMe-type
flaring stars AT Mic, AU Mic, EV Lac, UV Cet and YZ CMi obtained with the
XMM-Newton observatory. During 40 hours of simultaneous observation we identify
13 flares which occurred in both wave bands. For the first time, a correlation
between X-ray and ultraviolet flux for stellar flares has been observed. We
find power-law relationships between these two wavelength bands for the flare
luminosity increase, as well as for flare energies, with power-law exponents
between 1 and 2. We also observe a correlation between the ultraviolet flare
energy and the X-ray luminosity increase, which is in agreement with the
Neupert effect and demonstrates that chromospheric evaporation is taking place.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, accepted by A&A (30 Sept. 2004

People and Things on the Move: Domestic Material Culture, Poverty and Mobility in Victorian London

The development of what Mayne and Lawrence (Urban History 26: 325â48, 1999) termed âethnographicâ approaches to studying nineteenth-century households and urban communities has gathered momentum in recent years. As such research agendas have taken hold and been applied to new contexts, so critiques, methodological developments, and new intellectual and theoretical currents, have provided opportunities to enhance and develop approaches. This article contributes to this on-going process. Drawing upon household archaeological research on Limehouse, a poor neighborhood in Victorian London, and inspired by the theoretical insights provided by the ânew mobilities paradigm,â it aims to place âmobilityâ as a central and enabling intellectual framework for understanding the relationships between people, place, and poverty. Poor communities in nineteenth-century cities were undeniably mobile and transient. Historians and archaeologists have often regarded this mobility as an obstacle to studying everyday life in such contexts. Photoproduction of phi(1020) mesons on the proton at large momentum transfer
The cross section for meson photoproduction on the proton has been
measured for the first time up to a four-momentum transfer -t = 4 GeV^2, using
the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. At low
four-momentum transfer, the differential cross section is well described by
Pomeron exchange. At large four-momentum transfer, above -t = 1.8 GeV^2, the
data support a model where the Pomeron is resolved into its simplest component,
two gluons, which may couple to any quark in the proton and in the .Comment: 5 pages; 7 figure
Dependence of Quadrupole Strength in the Transition
Models of baryon structure predict a small quadrupole deformation of the
nucleon due to residual tensor forces between quarks or distortions from the
pion cloud. Sensitivity to quark versus pion degrees of freedom occurs through
the dependence of the magnetic (), electric (), and
scalar () multipoles in the
transition. We report new experimental values for the ratios
and over the range = 0.4-1.8 GeV, extracted from
precision data using a truncated multipole expansion.
Results are best described by recent unitary models in which the pion cloud

The e p -> e' p eta reaction at and above the S11(1535) baryon resonance
New cross sections for the reaction e p -> ep eta are reported for total
center of mass energy W = 1.5--1.86 GeV and invariant momentum transfer Q^2 =
0.25--1.5 GeV^2. This large kinematic range allows extraction of important new
information about response functions, photocouplings, and eta N coupling
strengths of baryon resonances. Expanded W coverage shows sharp structure at W
\~ 1.7 GeV; this is shown to come from interference between S and P waves and
can be interpreted in terms of known resonances. Improved values are derived

Temporal profile of body temperature in acute ischemic stroke: relation to stroke severity and outcome
BACKGROUND: Pyrexia after stroke (temperature â„37.5°C) is associated with poor prognosis, but information on timing of body temperature changes and relationship to stroke severity and subtypes varies. METHODS: We recruited patients with acute ischemic stroke, measured stroke severity, stroke subtype and recorded four-hourly tympanic (body) temperature readings from admission to 120 hours after stroke. We sought causes of pyrexia and measured functional outcome at 90 days. We systematically summarised all relevant previous studies. RESULTS: Amongst 44 patients (21 males, mean age 72 years SD 11) with median National Institute of Health Stroke Score (NIHSS) 7 (range 0â28), 14 had total anterior circulation strokes (TACS). On admission all patients, both TACS and non-TACS, were normothermic (median 36.3°C vs 36.5°C, p=0.382 respectively) at median 4 hours (interquartile range, IQR, 2â8) after stroke; admission temperature and NIHSS were not associated (r(2)=0.0, p=0.353). Peak temperature, occurring at 35.5 (IQR 19.0 to 53.8) hours after stroke, was higher in TACS (37.7°C) than non-TACS (37.1°C, p<0.001) and was associated with admission NIHSS (r(2)=0.20, p=0.002). Poor outcome (modified Rankin Scale â„3) at 90 days was associated with higher admission (36.6°C vs. 36.2°C p=0.031) and peak (37.4°C vs. 37.0°C, p=0.016) temperatures. Sixteen (36%) patients became pyrexial, in seven (44%) of whom we found no cause other than the stroke. CONCLUSIONS: Normothermia is usual within the first 4 hours of stroke. Peak temperature occurs at 1.5 to 2 days after stroke, and is related to stroke severity/subtype and more closely associated with poor outcome than admission temperature. Temperature-outcome associations after stroke are complex, but normothermia on admission should not preclude randomisation of patients into trials of therapeutic hypothermia
