    Proteolytic potential of enzymes produced by candida parapsilosis and rhodotorula. Mucilaginosa isolated from liquid whey

    The search for yeast with proteolytic activity that can be explored in technology and product innovation was the objective of this study to isolate and identify strains present in liquid whey and evaluate the proteolytic activity of isolates. From the isolated strains were selected for molecular identification, those with proteolytic activity. Verification of proteolytic activity was performed on milk agar and visualized by a translucent halo. Four strains belonging to two yeast species were identified as protease producers. Whey is promising in microbial sources of biotechnological interest and C. parapsilosis (ES01) and R. mucilaginosa (ES04) strains were good protease producers in commercial agar-like milk agar.     Nascidos vivos com comunicação interventricular: estudo epidemiológico

    Introduction: Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is a medical condition characterized by the presence of an opening or gap between the two ventricles of the heart, the lower chambers responsible for pumping blood to the body. This opening allows oxygenated blood, which should be pumped to the body, to mix with deoxygenated blood, causing an overload on the lungs and consequently on the heart. Methodology: The exploratory epidemiological study on live births with ventricular septal defect adopted an approach that combined data from the Information System on Live Births (SINASC) of DATASUS and research from academic sources, such as Google Scholar. Results: Analyzing the variable Color/Race, the data reveals a distribution among different ethnic groups. Most cases of congenital heart disease occurred in individuals of white ethnicity, totaling 1,449 cases, representing 58.57% of the total. Next, the brown ethnicity contributed 796 cases, equivalent to 32.17%. Conclusion: Understanding the incidence in different ethnic groups, gestation duration, and types of delivery provides a comprehensive overview, emphasizing the need for public health strategies that consider not only the cardiac condition itself but also associated socioeconomic and clinical factors.Introdução: A comunicação interventricular (CIV) é uma condição médica que se caracteriza pela presença de uma abertura ou abertura entre os dois ventrículos do coração, como câmaras inferiores responsáveis pelo bombeamento do sangue para o corpo. Essa abertura permite que o sangue oxigenado, que deveria ser bombeado para o corpo, se misture com o sangue não oxigenado, causando uma sobrecarga nos pulmões e, por consequência, no coração. Metodologia: O estudo epidemiológico exploratório sobre nascidos vivos com comunicação interventricular adotou uma abordagem que combinou dados do Sistema de Informações sobre Nascidos Vivos (SINASC) do DATASUS e pesquisa em fontes acadêmicas, como o Google Acadêmico. Resultado: Ao analisar a variável Cor/Raça, os dados revelam uma distribuição entre diferentes grupos étnicos. A maioria dos casos de cardiopatia congênita ocorreu em indivíduos de cor/raça branca, totalizando 1.449 casos, o que representa 58,57% do total. Em seguida, a cor/raça parda contribuiu com 796 casos, equivalente a 32,17%. Conclusão: A compreensão da incidência em diferentes grupos étnicos, duração da gestação e tipos de parto oferece um panorama abrangente, ressaltando a necessidade de estratégias de saúde pública que levem em consideração não apenas a condição cardíaca em si, mas também os fatores socioeconômicos e clínicos associado

    Peripheral device to quantify grip and pinch capacity of children

    <div><p>Abstract Introduction Grip and pinch movements are important to perform daily activities and to manipulate objects. In this paper we describe the development and evaluation of a peripheral device to quantify cylindrical grip, pulp-to-pulp pinch, pulp-to-side pinch strength and range of motion of children. Methods Three objects were selected: a door handle, a switch, and a key, which were instrumented with force sensing resistors to analyse the strength. Potentiometers were used to verify the range of motion and micro switches to assure the correct position of the fingers during the movement execution. Thirty volunteers (8.77 ± 1.28), both male and female, were selected to test the peripheral device functionality. Results The results determined the minimum necessary strength values for the object activation and maximum displacement, in which the values are 2.5N, 40°; 2.7N, 55°; and 2.8N, 100%, for door handle object, key object, and switch object, respectively. In the functionally tests, volunteers have shown a superior strength for activating each object and 73.33% of them have completed the range movement in the key object, 86.67% in the switch object, and 93.33% in the door handle object. Conclusion The developed peripheral device enabled the measurement of range and static and dynamic strength of grip and pinch movements of children.</p></div

    ANÁLISE SITUACIONAL DO RASTREAMENTO MAMOGRÁFICO DO CÂNCER DE MAMA NO PIAUÍ

    Câncer de mama, o mais incidente no mundo depois do câncer de pulmão, é o que mais atinge as mulheres em todo o planeta. O presente trabalho propôs investigar como também avaliar a adequação às diretrizes nacionais e a qualidade do rastreamento mamográfico no estado do Piauí. Trata-se de um estudo descritivo realizado a partir dos dados secundários do Sistema de Informação do Câncer e do Sistema de Informação Ambulatorial do Sistema Único de Saúde, de 2016 a 2019. O Piauí foi o estado do Nordeste que mais amplificou a produção de mamografias chegando a um aumento percentual de 4.146,11%. Houve predomínio de mamografias de rastreamento em mulheres de 50 a 69 anos, público-alvo do rastreio do câncer de mama. O número de exames realizados anualmente ultrapassou a periodicidade bienal. As mamografias de rastreamento com realização em até 30 dias superaram as mamografias diagnósticas em todo o período do estudo. Os exames com resultado em até 30 dias apresentaram percentuais maiores para mamografias diagnósticas nos anos de 2016 e 2017 que para os exames de rastreamento, com uma queda considerável nos anos seguintes. As mamografias de rastreamento apresentaram BI-RADS 1 e 2 e nos resultados de BI-RADS inconclusivos, os percentuais foram mais expressivos. A razão entre biópsias e mamografias com resultados BI-RADS 4 e 5 oscilou entre 0,01 e 1,0. Nosso estudo constatou que o Piauí, nesse intervalo de tempo, conseguiu melhorar o acesso à mamografia, entretanto, houve baixa cobertura associada à inadequação das diretrizes técnicas nacionais do rastreamento mamográfic

    Brazilian Flora 2020: Leveraging the power of a collaborative scientific network

    International audienceThe shortage of reliable primary taxonomic data limits the description of biological taxa and the understanding of biodiversity patterns and processes, complicating biogeographical, ecological, and evolutionary studies. This deficit creates a significant taxonomic impediment to biodiversity research and conservation planning. The taxonomic impediment and the biodiversity crisis are widely recognized, highlighting the urgent need for reliable taxonomic data. Over the past decade, numerous countries worldwide have devoted considerable effort to Target 1 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC), which called for the preparation of a working list of all known plant species by 2010 and an online world Flora by 2020. Brazil is a megadiverse country, home to more of the world's known plant species than any other country. Despite that, Flora Brasiliensis, concluded in 1906, was the last comprehensive treatment of the Brazilian flora. The lack of accurate estimates of the number of species of algae, fungi, and plants occurring in Brazil contributes to the prevailing taxonomic impediment and delays progress towards the GSPC targets. Over the past 12 years, a legion of taxonomists motivated to meet Target 1 of the GSPC, worked together to gather and integrate knowledge on the algal, plant, and fungal diversity of Brazil. Overall, a team of about 980 taxonomists joined efforts in a highly collaborative project that used cybertaxonomy to prepare an updated Flora of Brazil, showing the power of scientific collaboration to reach ambitious goals. This paper presents an overview of the Brazilian Flora 2020 and provides taxonomic and spatial updates on the algae, fungi, and plants found in one of the world's most biodiverse countries. We further identify collection gaps and summarize future goals that extend beyond 2020. Our results show that Brazil is home to 46,975 native species of algae, fungi, and plants, of which 19,669 are endemic to the country. The data compiled to date suggests that the Atlantic Rainforest might be the most diverse Brazilian domain for all plant groups except gymnosperms, which are most diverse in the Amazon. However, scientific knowledge of Brazilian diversity is still unequally distributed, with the Atlantic Rainforest and the Cerrado being the most intensively sampled and studied biomes in the country. In times of “scientific reductionism”, with botanical and mycological sciences suffering pervasive depreciation in recent decades, the first online Flora of Brazil 2020 significantly enhanced the quality and quantity of taxonomic data available for algae, fungi, and plants from Brazil. This project also made all the information freely available online, providing a firm foundation for future research and for the management, conservation, and sustainable use of the Brazilian funga and flora

    NEOTROPICAL XENARTHRANS: a data set of occurrence of xenarthran species in the Neotropics

    Xenarthrans—anteaters, sloths, and armadillos—have essential functions for ecosystem maintenance, such as insect control and nutrient cycling, playing key roles as ecosystem engineers. Because of habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting pressure, and conflicts with domestic dogs, these species have been threatened locally, regionally, or even across their full distribution ranges. The Neotropics harbor 21 species of armadillos, 10 anteaters, and 6 sloths. Our data set includes the families Chlamyphoridae (13), Dasypodidae (7), Myrmecophagidae (3), Bradypodidae (4), and Megalonychidae (2). We have no occurrence data on Dasypus pilosus (Dasypodidae). Regarding Cyclopedidae, until recently, only one species was recognized, but new genetic studies have revealed that the group is represented by seven species. In this data paper, we compiled a total of 42,528 records of 31 species, represented by occurrence and quantitative data, totaling 24,847 unique georeferenced records. The geographic range is from the southern United States, Mexico, and Caribbean countries at the northern portion of the Neotropics, to the austral distribution in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. Regarding anteaters, Myrmecophaga tridactyla has the most records (n = 5,941), and Cyclopes sp. have the fewest (n = 240). The armadillo species with the most data is Dasypus novemcinctus (n = 11,588), and the fewest data are recorded for Calyptophractus retusus (n = 33). With regard to sloth species, Bradypus variegatus has the most records (n = 962), and Bradypus pygmaeus has the fewest (n = 12). Our main objective with Neotropical Xenarthrans is to make occurrence and quantitative data available to facilitate more ecological research, particularly if we integrate the xenarthran data with other data sets of Neotropical Series that will become available very soon (i.e., Neotropical Carnivores, Neotropical Invasive Mammals, and Neotropical Hunters and Dogs). Therefore, studies on trophic cascades, hunting pressure, habitat loss, fragmentation effects, species invasion, and climate change effects will be possible with the Neotropical Xenarthrans data set.
