Attachment, emotion regulation and coping in Portuguese emerging adults: a test of a mediation hypothesis

Although the quality of parent-adolescent emotional bonds has consistently been proposed as a major influence on young adult's psycho-emotional functioning, the precise means by which these bonds either facilitate or impede adaptive coping are not well-understood. In an effort to advance this inquiry, the present study examined interrelationships among measures of parental attachment, emotion regulation processes, and preferred coping strategies within a sample of 942 college freshmen. Structural Equation Modelling was used to test whether the link between attachment to parents and the use of particular coping strategies is mediated by differences in emotion regulation mechanisms. As hypothesized, differences in attachment to parents predicted differences in the use of emotion regulation mechanisms and coping strategies. More specifically, having a close emotional bond, feeling supported in autonomy processes and having (moderately) low levels of separation anxiety toward parents predict more constructive emotion regulation mechanisms and coping strategies. Tomando como ponto de partida a análise detalhada do poema "Noite e nevoeiro - Alain Resnais (1955)", do livro Movimentos no Escuro (2005), nas suas ramificações discursiva, documental e interartística, este estudo procura levar a cabo uma reflexão crítica sobre as modalidades da resistência poética que têm estruturado a obra de José Miguel Silva (n. 1969) desde o seu primeiro livro (O Sino de Areia, 1999). Pretende- -se que o estudo empírico favoreça uma problematização teórica da complexidade das correlações entre poesia, trauma, testemunho, efeito histórico e posição política, com base nos trabalhos de pensadores como Jean-Luc Nancy, Jacques Rancière, Paul Ricoeur, Jacques Derrida, Giorgio Agamben ou Dominick LaCapra, mas também um equacionamento histórico-literário da pertença do autor e da sua poética a uma linhagem da poesia em língua portuguesa onde pontificam o "sentimento do mundo" de Carlos Drummond de Andrade e a "consciência sempre vigilante" de Jorge de Sena.Taking as its starting point a detailed analysis of the poem "Noite e nevoeiro - Alain Resnais (1955)", from the book Movimentos no Escuro (2005), in its discursive, documental and interartistic ramifications, this study seeks to undertake a critical reflection on the modalities of poetic resistance which have structured the work of José Miguel Silva (b. 1969) since his very first book (O Sino de Areia, 1999). Ao terror do outro respondemos com pedradas cegas: notas sobre o desconforto na poesia portuguesa contemporânea

Com base numa perspectivação histórico-literária de alguns dos problemas mais prementes da criação poética, em particular os mais directamente relacionados com a responsabilidade ético-cívica do artista, este estudo leva a cabo uma reflexão crítica sobre o discurso poético português contemporâneo. Equacionam-se algumas questões específicas desse discurso, a partir da obra poética de autores como Manuel de Freitas e José Miguel Silva, sobrelevando os dispositivos enunciativos e textuais que marcadamente caracterizam a expressão da poesia portuguesa actual.Based on a historical-literary perspective of some of the most pressing problems of poetic creation, in particular those most directly related to the ethical and civic responsibility of the artist, this study carries out a critical reflection on the contemporary Portuguese poetic discourse. We discuss some specific issues of this speech, analysing the poetic works of authors such as Manuel de Freitas and Jose Miguel Silva, through the emphasis on the enunciative and textual devices that markedly characterize the expression of the current Portuguese poetry

Apesar das ruínas, tanto tempo nenhum: Joaquim Manuel Magalhães, Luís Quintais e Rui Pires Cabral

Procurando problematizar alguns princípios que dizem respeito à constituição de uma estética decadentista finissecular em língua portuguesa na passagem do século XIX para o século XX, este trabalho pretende apresentar uma reflexão sistematizante sobre algumas questões decisivas da poesia portuguesa das últimas décadas do século XX, a partir da abordagem articulada das obras poéticas de três autores (Joaquim Manuel Magalhães, Luís Quintais e Rui Pires Cabral) que produziram livros e estudos críticos determinantes no período que marca a transição entre os séculos XX e XXI. Neste sentido, e a partir da leitura crítica concentrada fundamen-talmente em produções dos anos 80-90, o estudo visa uma perspectivação integrada de certas especificidades discursivas, temáticas e poetológicas das obras, com vista a uma ponderação mais alargada que coloque em destaque os traços próprios de uma certa linhagem da poesia portuguesa do final do século XX, de consequências notórias na constituição da poesia portuguesa do início do século XXI. Crise e crítica, história e decadência, regresso e progresso, o lugar e a morada, música e melancolia, restos e ruínas: eis alguns dos motivos que atravessam e estruturam os versos destas três obras, e que se revelam cruciais para a análise da função que elas desempenham no panorama da literatura portuguesa do final do século XX.Trying to problematize some principles concerning the establishment of a decadent aesthetic in the late twentieth century, this paper aims to present a global reflection on some key issues of the Portuguese poetry of the last decades of the twentieth century, based on the analysis of the poetic works of three authors (Joaquim Manuel Magalhães, Luís Quintais and Rui Pires Cabral) who have published books and several decisive critical essays in the period that marks the transition between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. In this sense, and based on the combined critical reading of works of the 80-90s, the study aims at an integrated analysis of specific discursive, thematic and poetological features of these works, in order to highlight the very traits of a certain lineage of Portuguese poetry of the late twentieth century, with notorious consequences in the constitution of the Portuguese poetry of the early twenty-first century. Crisis and criticism, history and decay, return and progress, the place and the dwelling, music and melancholy, debris and ruins: here are some of the reasons that cross and structure the lines of these three works, and that prove crucial to the analysis of the function they play in the panorama of Portuguese literature of the late twentieth century

Para uma poética dos espaços em branco: os poemas-colagem de Rui Pires Cabral

Leitura teórico-crítica das últimas obras de Rui Pires Cabral (Biblioteca dos Rapazes, 2012; Álbum, 2013; Broken, 2014; Oh! LUSITANIA, 2014; Elsewhere/Alhures, 2015), à luz da poética gradualmente enunciada pelo autor ao longo da sua obra anterior composta a partir de Geografia das Estações (1994), com vista a uma tentativa de sistematização dos procedimentos intertextuais e interartísticos constitutivos dos volumes em análise procedimentos maioritariamente enquadrados no âmbito de formas contemporâneas de montagem e de colagem , enquanto resultados do entendimento intermedial e intermaterial do ofício poético veiculado pelo artista desde o início da sua produção.Theoretical and critical reading of the last works of Rui Pires Cabral (Biblioteca dos Rapazes, 2012; Álbum, 2013; Broken, 2014; Oh! O riso agudo dos cínicos: desassossego e ironia em Armando Silva Carvalho

A partir de uma reflexão sobre a resposta do poeta Armando Silva Carvalho (n. 1938) à questão "A poesia é uma forma de resistência?" e sobre o seu dictum "O texto não faz nem refaz o mundo", este trabalho procura reconstituir na sua obra poética, desde o inaugural Lírica Consumível (1965), os princípios elementares que presidem ao exercício da "expressão desassossegada", da retórica da ironia e da textualidade paródica que têm singularizado o discurso do poeta no panorama da literatura portuguesa contemporânea, exigindo ao leitor a colaboração num complexo jogo de reconstrução da intencionalidade autoral. Esta análise terá em vista um equacionamento sistemático das modulações que a razão cínica, fundada no culto da polifonia irónica, tem apresentado numa certa linhagem da poesia moderna e contemporânea que ambiciona, na síntese de Armando Silva Carvalho, "incomodar os vivos" e assim, nesta justa medida, assumir a resistência enunciativa como forma de existência poética.Departing from a reflection on the response of the poet Armando Silva Carvalho (b. 1938) to the question "Is Poetry a form of resistance?" and on his dictum "The text does not remake the world", this paper seeks to reconstruct in his poetry, since the inaugural Lírica Consumível (1965), the basic principles governing the exercise of the "restless expression", the rhetoric of irony and parodic textuality that have singled the speech of this poet in the panorama of contemporary Portuguese literature. These features have always required the reader active collaboration in a complex game of reconstruction of the authorial intentionality. Such an analysis will aim at a systematic equation of the modulations which the cynical reason, founded on the cult of ironic polyphony, has displayed in a certain lineage of modern and contemporary poetry that aims at the synthesis of Armando Silva Carvalho, "to disturb the living", in order to assume resistance as a mode of poetical enunciation existence

Biclustering electronic health records to unravel disease presentation patterns

Tese de mestrado, Ciência de Dados, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Ciências, 2019A Esclerose Lateral Amiotrófica (ELA) é uma doença neurodegenerativa heterogénea com padrões de apresentação altamente variáveis. Dada a natureza heterogénea dos doentes com ELA, aquando do diagnóstico os clínicos normalmente estimam a progressão da doença utilizando uma taxa de decaimento funcional, calculada com base na Escala Revista de Avaliação Funcional de ELA (ALSFRS-R). A utilização de modelos de Aprendizagem Automática que consigam lidar com este padrões complexos é necessária para compreender a doença, melhorar os cuidados aos doentes e a sua sobrevivência. Estes modelos devem ser explicáveis para que os clínicos possam tomar decisões informadas. Desta forma, o nosso objectivo é descobrir padrões de apresentação da doença, para isso propondo uma nova abordagem de Prospecção de Dados: Descoberta de Meta-atributos Discriminativos (DMD), que utiliza uma combinação de Biclustering, Classificação baseada em Biclustering e Prospecção de Regras de Associação para Classificação. Estes padrões (chamados de Meta-atributos) são compostos por subconjuntos de atributos discriminativos conjuntamente com os seus valores, permitindo assim distinguir e caracterizar subgrupos de doentes com padrões similares de apresentação da doença. Os Registos de Saúde Electrónicos (RSE) utilizados neste trabalho provêm do conjunto de dados JPND ONWebDUALS (ONTology-based Web Database for Understanding Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), composto por questões standardizadas acerca de factores de risco, mutações genéticas, atributos clínicos ou informação de sobrevivência de uma coorte de doentes e controlos seguidos pelo consórcio ENCALS (European Network to Cure ALS), que inclui vários países europeus, incluindo Portugal. Nesta tese a metodologia proposta foi utilizada na parte portuguesa do conjunto de dados ONWebDUALS para encontrar padrões de apresentação da doença que: 1) distinguissem os doentes de ELA dos seus controlos e 2) caracterizassem grupos de doentes de ELA com diferentes taxas de progressão (categorizados em grupos Lentos, Neutros e Rápidos). Nenhum padrão coerente emergiu das experiências efectuadas para a primeira tarefa. Contudo, para a segunda tarefa os padrões encontrados para cada um dos três grupos de progressão foram reconhecidos e validados por clínicos especialistas em ELA, como sendo características relevantes de doentes com progressão Lenta, Neutra e Rápida. Estes resultados sugerem que a nossa abordagem genérica baseada em Biclustering tem potencial para identificar padrões de apresentação noutros problemas ou doenças semelhantes.Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a heterogeneous neurodegenerative disease with a high variability of presentation patterns. Given the heterogeneous nature of ALS patients and targeting a better prognosis, clinicians usually estimate disease progression at diagnosis using the rate of decay computed from the Revised ALS Functional Rating Scale (ALSFRS-R). In this context, the use of Machine Learning models able to unravel the complexity of disease presentation patterns is paramount for disease understanding, targeting improved patient care and longer survival times. Furthermore, explainable models are vital, since clinicians must be able to understand the reasoning behind a given model’s result before making a decision that can impact a patient’s life. Therefore we aim at unravelling disease presentation patterns by proposing a new Data Mining approach called Discriminative Meta-features Discovery (DMD), which uses a combination of Biclustering, Biclustering-based Classification and Class Association Rule Mining. These patterns (called Metafeatures) are composed of discriminative subsets of features together with their values, allowing to distinguish and characterize subgroups of patients with similar disease presentation patterns. The Electronic Health Record (EHR) data used in this work comes from the JPND ONWebDUALS (ONTology-based Web Database for Understanding Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) dataset, comprised of standardized questionnaire answers regarding risk factors, genetic mutations, clinical features and survival information from a cohort of patients and controls from ENCALS (European Network to Cure ALS), a consortium of diverse European countries, including Portugal. In this work the proposed methodology was used on the ONWebDUALS Portuguese EHR data to find disease presentation patterns that: 1) distinguish the ALS patients from their controls and 2) characterize groups of ALS patients with different progression rates (categorized into Slow, Neutral and Fast groups). No clear pattern emerged from the experiments performed for the first task. However, in the second task the patterns found for each of the three progression groups were recognized and validated by ALS expert clinicians, as being relevant characteristics of slow, neutral and fast progressing patients. These results suggest that our generic Biclustering approach is a promising way to unravel disease presentation patterns and could be applied to similar problems and other diseases
