    Avaliação dos efeitos de um protocolo com a plataforma NINTENDO WII® nas dimensões cognitivas e físicas /equilíbrio e coordenação) em idosos

    Objetivos: Avaliar e quantificar o impacto do tratamento de fisioterapia, utilizando exclusivamente a Nintendo Wii®, na Qualidade de Vida relacionada com a saúde dos sujeitos com 65 anos ou mais e as mudanças na cognição, equilíbrio, coordenação e desempenho das Atividades da Vida Diária após o protocolo; Inquirir o grau de adesão ao treino. Material e Métodos: 30 sujeitos em dois momentos de avaliação. Medidas aplicadas: SF-12, MSE, TUG e com tarefa cognitiva, Escala de Equilíbrio de Berg, avaliação da coordenação e Escala de Barthel. Intervenção durante 4 semanas, 2 por semana, 60 minutos, em 8 sessões. Resultados: Ganhos em todas as escalas, com significado estatístico na Escala de Saúde Mental Geral, componente do SF-12 (p=0,008), MMSE (p=0,007), TUG normal (p=0,003), TUG com tarefa cognitiva (p=0,028) e Protocolo de Avaliação da Coordenação proposto por O’Neil et al. (p=0,008). Da amostra 46,67% teve um Baixo Grau de Adesão, 30% Médio Grau de Adesão, e 23,33% Alto Grau de Adesão. Conclusões: Um protocolo de intervenção de 4 semanas com a Nintendo Wii Sports® (bowling) em sujeitos institucionalizados, apresenta benefícios na QV relacionada com a Saúde Metal e de cognição, e dimensão física da coordenação e capacidade para a dupla-tarefa

    Tracking novelties in psychotherapy process research: the innovative moments coding system

    This article presents a method for the assessment of innovative moments, which are novelties that emerge in contrast to a client’s problematic self-narrative as expressed in therapy, the innovative moments coding system (IMCS). The authors discuss the theoretical background of the IMCS as well as its coding procedures.     O Observatório Astronómico da Escola Politécnica : modelos virtuais para a sua preservação

    O último observatório de ensino de interesse histórico em Portugal, que data do final do século XIX, é um dos edifícios mais carismáticos dos Museus da Universidade de Lisboa. Após um século de uso intensivo, o Observatório Astronómico da Escola Politécnica necessita de obras estruturais antes de ser devolvido integralmente à fruição pública. Recentemente, um grupo de estudantes desta Universidade foi envolvido na construção de modelos 3D virtuais para recriar o edifício do Observatório e alguns objetos das suas coleções. A qualidade dos modelos potencia a sua utilização como instrumento de divulgação de uma peça relevante do património histórico-científico da Universidade de Lisboa. Este artigo descreve as várias abordagens adoptadas e compara-as entre si.The Astronomical Observatory of the Lisbon Polytechnic School is the last teaching observatory of historical interest in Portugal. Created in the late nineteenth century, it survives intact in its original design. Given its singularity in the context of scientific heritage, the quality and beauty of its architecture, as well as its privileged location in the Botanical Garden, the Observatory has the potential to become the Museum’s focal point for the promotion of astronomy and its history. After 100 years of intense use, however, the Observatory is highly degraded and needs structural restoration before it can be fully returned to public fruition. Recently, three professors of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon decided to involve a group of students in the construction of virtual 3D models to recreate the Observatory building and collections.     Treatment interaction in moments of ambivalence: an exploratory study a case of failure

    No processo psicoterapêutico a mudança constrói-se através da emergência e expansão de excepções ao funcionamento problemático do cliente. Contudo, o potencial de mudança destas excepções ou inovações pode ser abortado através da atenuação do seu significado quando o cliente as desvaloriza, trivializa ou nega. Quando este processo se repete ao longo da terapia estamos na presença de ambivalência, na medida em que ocorre uma oscilação recorrente entre duas posições opostas (inovação-retorno ao funcionamento problemático). O presente estudo exploratório tem como principal objectivo descrever a interacção terapêutica nestes momentos de ambivalência, num caso de insucesso psicoterapêutico, recorrendo ao Sistema de Codificação da Colaboração Terapêutica. Os resultados sugerem que a ambivalência emerge maioritariamente no seguimento de intervenções em que a terapeuta desafia a perspectiva habitual da cliente. Os resultados mostram ainda que a terapeuta tende a responder à ambivalência da cliente com um novo desafio, sendo que a cliente tende a expressar novamente ambivalência ou a discordar da terapeuta. Deste modo, quando a terapeuta persiste no desafio verifica-se frequentemente uma escalada no desconforto da cliente, que se manifesta na evolução de uma resposta de ambivalência para uma resposta de invalidação por parte da cliente.Change in psychotherapy occurs through the emergence and expansion of exceptions to the client’s problematic functioning. However, these exceptions’ potential to promote change may be aborted by the attenuation of their meaning, when the client devaluates, trivializes or denies them. When this process repeats itself throughout the therapeutic process, clients are facing ambivalence, since there is a recurrent oscillation between two opposite positions (innovation – return to the problematic functioning). The present exploratory study aims at describing the therapeutic interaction within moments in which ambivalence occurs in an unsuccessful case using the Therapeutic Collaboration Coding System. Results suggest that ambivalence emerges mainly as a response to an intervention in which the therapist challenges clients usual (i.e., problematic) perspective. Moreover, results suggest that the therapist tends to respond to client’s ambivalence with a new challenge intervention which is generally followed by ambivalence or even invalidation from the client. Hence, when the therapist persists in challenging the client there is usually an escalation in clients’ discomfort, expressed in the evolution of a ambivalence response towards an invalidation response.(undefined

    A 802.11p prototype implementation

    This paper presents an IEEE 802.11p full-stack prototype implementation to data exchange among vehicles and between vehicles and the roadway infrastructures. The prototype architecture is based on FPGAs for Intermediate Frequency (IF) and base band purposes, using 802.11a based transceivers for RF interfaces. Power amplifiers were also addressed, by using commercial and in-house solutions. This implementation aims to provide technical solutions for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) field, namely for tolling and traffic management related services, in order to promote safety, mobility and driving comfort through the dynamic and real-time cooperation among vehicles and/or between vehicles and infrastructures. The performance of the proposed scheme is tested under realistic urban and suburban driving conditions. Preliminary results are promising, since they comply with most of the 802.11p standard requirements

    The role of mutual in-feeding in maintaining problematic self-narratives: exploring one path to therapeutic failure

    According to the author’s narrative model of change, clients may maintain a problematic self-stability across therapy, leading to therapeutic failure, by a mutual in-feeding process, which involves a cyclical movement between two opposing parts of the self. During innovative moments (IMs) in the therapy dialogue, clients’ dominant self-narrative is interrupted by exceptions to that self-narrative, but subsequently the dominant self-narrative returns. The authors identified return-to-the-problem markers (RPMs), which are empirical indicators of the mutual in-feeding process, in passages containing IMs in 10 cases of narrative therapy (five good-outcome cases and five poor-outcome cases) with females who were victims of intimate violence. The poor-outcome group had a significantly higher percentage of IMs with RPMs than the good-outcome group.     Supercritical Extraction of Lycopene from Tomato Industrial Waste with Ethane

    Supercritical fluid extraction of all-E-lycopene from tomato industrial wastes (mixture of skins and seeds) was carried out in a semi-continuous flow apparatus using ethane as supercritical solvent. The effect of pressure, temperature, feed particle size, solvent superficial velocity and matrix initial composition was evaluated. Moreover, the yield of the extraction was compared with that obtained with other supercritical solvents (supercritical CO2 and a near critical mixture of ethane and propane). The recovery of all-E-lycopene increased with pressure, decreased with the increase of the particle size in the initial stages of the extraction and was not practically affected by the solvent superficial velocity. The effect of the temperature was more complex. When the temperature increased from 40 to 60 °C the recovery of all-E-lycopene increased from 80 to 90%. However, for a further increase to 80 °C, the recovery remained almost the same, indicating that some E-Z isomerization could have occurred, as well as some degradation of lycopene. The recovery of all-E-lycopene was almost the same for feed samples with different all-E-lycopene content. Furthermore, when a batch with a higher all-E-lycopene content was used, supercritical ethane and a near critical mixture of ethane and propane showed to be better solvents than supercritical CO2 leading to a faster extraction with a higher recovery of the carotenoid

In this work, we show that copper and the antifungal fluconazole act synergistically against Candida glabrata, an opportunistic pathogenic yeast intrinsically tolerant to fluconazole. Analyses of the transcriptomic profile of C. glabrata after the combination of copper and fluconazole showed that the expression of the multidrug transporter gene CDR1 was decreased, suggesting that fluconazole efflux could be affected. In agreement, we observed that copper inhibits the transactivation of Pdr1, the transcription regulator of multidrug transporters and leads to the intracellular accumulation of fluconazole. Copper also decreases the transcriptional induction of ergosterol biosynthesis (ERG) genes by fluconazole, which culminates in the accumulation of toxic sterols. Co-treatment of cells with copper and fluconazole should affect the function of proteins located in the plasma membrane, as several ultrastructural alterations, including irregular cell wall and plasma membrane and loss of cell wall integrity, were observed. Finally, we show that the combination of copper and fluconazole downregulates the expression of the gene encoding the zinc-responsive transcription regulator Zap1, which possibly, together with the membrane transporters malfunction, generates zinc depletion. Supplementation with zinc reverts the toxic effect of combining copper with fluconazole, underscoring the importance of this metal in the observed synergistic effect. Overall, this work, while unveiling the molecular basis that supports the use of copper to enhance the effectiveness of fluconazole, paves the way for the development of new metal-based antifungal strategies.publishe
