    Attitude versus Involvement: Predicting Ethically and Socially Responsible Consumption Behavior

    Critics argue that the value gap (difference between what consumers say they care about and what they actually choose to purchase) suggests that ethical consumption is not as important as consumers imply. There is much talk about the ethical consumer “myth’ as consumers often claim to be interested in purchasing ethically and socially responsible products yet sales figures for green products often do not exceed 5% total product sales in any one category with organic fruits and vegetables being the one exception. Traditional models use consumer attitudes to the environment as a predictor of ethically and socially responsible consumption behavior (ESRCB) but this yields mixed results in the literature; whereas this study suggests that sustainable lifestyle involvement (SLI) is a much stronger predictor of ESRCB. Findings confirm that the stronger the level of involvement with a sustainable lifestyle the greater the likelihood of exhibiting ESRCB

    Facilitating Effective Communication Between First Responders and Older Adults During Fall Incidents: An Educational Intervention

    PURPOSE. The purpose of this project was to provide first responders with communication strategies for older adults that may help when responding to fall- related calls. General information was also provided to First Responders on working with older adults with a focus on the aging process, fall risk factors, and communications strategies. METHODS. A series of educational sessions to first responders at a local fire district were developed and presented by occupational therapy students. Materials were developed by presenters from evidence-based resources and tailored to the target population. Each presentation focused on statistics about older adults, the aging process, fall risk factors, and effective communication strategies for older adults. Each two hour presentation consisted of a lecture, role play, and a discussion period. RESULTS. Evaluations were completed by participants upon the conclusion of each educational presentation. Evaluations included rating the quality and information provided, and whether participants recommend this training to other first responders. The average rating was 92-98% which indicated participants strongly agree and the training was useful and would recommend it to other first responders. CONCLUSION. As the older adult population increases, more individuals wish to “age in place”, leading to an increased number of falls among older adults, and requiring emergency care from first responders. Information and communication strategies provided through educational presentations to first responders may help facilitate effective communication during an emergency call with an older adult and also prevent future falls. Collaboration with first responders can help occupational therapists develop new role regarding fall prevention and communication with older adults

    Bodenwissen im Handumdrehen – Spielerisch zum Bodenbewusstsein

    Das Wissen und die Wahrnehmung auf funktionsfähige Böden existentiell an-gewiesen zu sein, sind in der Öffentlichkeit und der Politik nach wie vor sehr gering ausgeprägt. Nur wenn es uns zu- künftig besser gelingt, den Wert des Bodens als schützenswertes und gemeinschaftliches Gut überzeugend und anschaulich zu vermitteln, werden wir eine Änderung im positiven Sinne bewirken können. Ein Weg um das Bewusstsein für die wertvolle Ressource Boden in der Öffentlichkeit zu verbessern, ist die Bildungsarbeit im KITA- und Vorschulbereich. Hier setzt das Memory-Spiel „Bodenwissen im Handumdrehen“ an. Es vermittelt auf spielerische Weise Wissenswertes, Spannendes und Interessantes über die Gefährdungen, die Entstehung und die Schönheit von Böden. Darüber hinaus schafft es Anreize, sich stärker für den Boden zu interessieren und weckt Neugier für das Thema. In dem achtseitigen Begleitheft werden in prägnanten und leicht verständlichen Sätzen die Inhalte und Kernbotschaften zu den Abbildungen sowie zur Bedeutung von Böden beschrieben. Zielgruppe sind insbesondere Kinder im Vorschul- und Grund-schulalter. Der Beitrag beschreibt die Konzeption und Umsetzung des Spiels und legt den Fokus auf die Beantwortung folgender Fragen: Wie ist das Spiel ein Jahr nach seiner Veröffentlichung aufgenommen worden? Hat es die Zielgruppen erreicht? Welche wichtigen Erfahrungen und Anregungen können für weitere Arbeiten zur Vermittlung des Bodenbewusstseins gegeben werden

    Issues With Variability in Electronic Health Record Data About Race and Ethnicity: Descriptive Analysis of the National COVID Cohort Collaborative Data Enclave

    Background:The adverse impact of COVID-19 on marginalized and under-resourced communities of color has highlighted the need for accurate, comprehensive race and ethnicity data. However, a significant technical challenge related to integrating race and ethnicity data in large, consolidated databases is the lack of consistency in how data about race and ethnicity are collected and structured by health care organizations. Objective:This study aims to evaluate and describe variations in how health care systems collect and report information about the race and ethnicity of their patients and to assess how well these data are integrated when aggregated into a large clinical database. Methods:At the time of our analysis, the National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C) Data Enclave contained records from 6.5 million patients contributed by 56 health care institutions. We quantified the variability in the harmonized race and ethnicity data in the N3C Data Enclave by analyzing the conformance to health care standards for such data. We conducted a descriptive analysis by comparing the harmonized data available for research purposes in the database to the original source data contributed by health care institutions. To make the comparison, we tabulated the original source codes, enumerating how many patients had been reported with each encoded value and how many distinct ways each category was reported. The nonconforming data were also cross tabulated by 3 factors: patient ethnicity, the number of data partners using each code, and which data models utilized those particular encodings. For the nonconforming data, we used an inductive approach to sort the source encodings into categories. For example, values such as “Declined” were grouped with “Refused,” and “Multiple Race” was grouped with “Two or more races” and “Multiracial.” Results:“No matching concept” was the second largest harmonized concept used by the N3C to describe the race of patients in their database. In addition, 20.7% of the race data did not conform to the standard; the largest category was data that were missing. Hispanic or Latino patients were overrepresented in the nonconforming racial data, and data from American Indian or Alaska Native patients were obscured. Although only a small proportion of the source data had not been mapped to the correct concepts (0.6%), Black or African American and Hispanic/Latino patients were overrepresented in this category. Conclusions:Differences in how race and ethnicity data are conceptualized and encoded by health care institutions can affect the quality of the data in aggregated clinical databases. The impact of data quality issues in the N3C Data Enclave was not equal across all races and ethnicities, which has the potential to introduce bias in analyses and conclusions drawn from these data. Transparency about how data have been transformed can help users make accurate analyses and inferences and eventually better guide clinical care and public policy

    In Vivo Turnover of Tau and APP Metabolites in the Brains of Wild-Type and Tg2576 Mice: Greater Stability of sAPP in the β-Amyloid Depositing Mice

    The metabolism of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) and tau are central to the pathobiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We have examined the in vivo turnover of APP, secreted APP (sAPP), Aβ and tau in the wild-type and Tg2576 mouse brain using cycloheximide to block protein synthesis. In spite of overexpression of APP in the Tg2576 mouse, APP is rapidly degraded, similar to the rapid turnover of the endogenous protein in the wild-type mouse. sAPP is cleared from the brain more slowly, particularly in the Tg2576 model where the half-life of both the endogenous murine and transgene-derived human sAPP is nearly doubled compared to wild-type mice. The important Aβ degrading enzymes neprilysin and IDE were found to be highly stable in the brain, and soluble Aβ40 and Aβ42 levels in both wild-type and Tg2576 mice rapidly declined following the depletion of APP. The cytoskeletal-associated protein tau was found to be highly stable in both wild-type and Tg2576 mice. Our findings unexpectedly show that of these various AD-relevant protein metabolites, sAPP turnover in the brain is the most different when comparing a wild-type mouse and a β-amyloid depositing, APP overexpressing transgenic model. Given the neurotrophic roles attributed to sAPP, the enhanced stability of sAPP in the β-amyloid depositing Tg2576 mice may represent a neuroprotective response

    La enhances IRES-mediated translation of laminin B1 during malignant epithelial to mesenchymal transition

    The majority of transcripts that harbor an internal ribosome entry site (IRES) are involved in cancer development via corresponding proteins. A crucial event in tumor progression referred to as epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) allows carcinoma cells to acquire invasive properties. The translational activation of the extracellular matrix component laminin B1 (LamB1) during EMT has been recently reported suggesting an IRES-mediated mechanism. In this study, the IRES activity of LamB1 was determined by independent bicistronic reporter assays. Strong evidences exclude an impact of cryptic promoter or splice sites on IRES-driven translation of LamB1. Furthermore, no other LamB1 mRNA species arising from alternative transcription start sites or polyadenylation signals were detected that account for its translational control. Mapping of the LamB1 5′-untranslated region (UTR) revealed the minimal LamB1 IRES motif between −293 and −1 upstream of the start codon. Notably, RNA affinity purification showed that the La protein interacts with the LamB1 IRES. This interaction and its regulation during EMT were confirmed by ribonucleoprotein immunoprecipitation. In addition, La was able to positively modulate LamB1 IRES translation. In summary, these data indicate that the LamB1 IRES is activated by binding to La which leads to translational upregulation during hepatocellular EMT
