Double-peaked Oxygen Lines Are not Rare in Nebular Spectra of Core-Collapse Supernovae
Double-peaked oxygen lines in the nebular spectra of two peculiar Type Ib/c
Supernovae (SN Ib/c) have been interpreted as off-axis views of a GRB-jet or
unipolar blob ejections. Here we present late-time spectra of 8 SN IIb, Ib and
Ic and show that this phenomenon is common and should not be so firmly linked
to extraordinary explosion physics. The line profiles are most likely caused by
ejecta expanding with a torus- or disk-like geometry. Double-peaked oxygen

Spectroscopy of High-Redshift Supernovae from the ESSENCE Project: The First Four Years
We present the results of spectroscopic observations from the ESSENCE
high-redshift supernova (SN) survey during its first four years of operation.
This sample includes spectra of all SNe Ia whose light curves were presented by
Miknaitis et al. (2007) and used in the cosmological analyses of Davis et al.
(2007) and Wood-Vasey et al. (2007). The sample represents 273 hours of
spectroscopic observations with 6.5 - 10-m-class telescopes of objects detected
and selected for spectroscopy by the ESSENCE team. We present 174 spectra of
156 objects. Combining this sample with that of Matheson et al. (2005), we have
a total sample of 329 spectra of 274 objects. From this, we are able to
spectroscopically classify 118 Type Ia SNe. As the survey has matured, the
efficiency of classifying SNe Ia has remained constant while we have observed
both higher-redshift SNe Ia and SNe Ia farther from maximum brightness.
Examining the subsample of SNe Ia with host-galaxy redshifts shows that
redshifts derived from only the SN Ia spectra are consistent with redshifts
found from host-galaxy spectra. Moreover, the phases derived from only the SN
Ia spectra are consistent with those derived from light-curve fits. By
comparing our spectra to local templates, we find that the rate of objects
similar to the overluminous SN 1991T and the underluminous SN 1991bg in our
sample are consistent with that of the local sample. We do note, however, that
we detect no object spectroscopically or photometrically similar to SN 1991bg.
Although systematic effects could reduce the high-redshift rate we expect based
on the low-redshift surveys, it is possible that SN 1991bg-like SNe Ia are less

Core Stabilization Exercise Prescription, Part I: Current Concepts in Assessment and Intervention
Context: Injury to the low back can cause significant pain and dysfunction, which can affect an athleteâs performance and result in time lost from sport. A common conservative treatment is therapeutic core stabilization exercises, which can address pain and musculoskeletal dysfunction in patients with low back pathology.
Evidence Acquisition: MEDLINE and CINAHL were searched (from 1966 to March 2013) to identify relevant research. Keywords and keyword combinations searched included motor control exercise, segmental stabilization, core stabilization, transversus abdominis, multifidi, and low back pain.
Results: There are 2 popular rehabilitation strategies to assess core function and promote core stabilization. Each has been developed based on biomechanical models of lumbar segmental stability and observed motor control dysfunction in patients with low back pain.
Conclusion: Controversy exists among clinical and research groups as to the optimal strategy for an athlete with low back pain
Core Stabilization Exercise Prescription, Part 2: A Systematic Review of Motor Control and General (Global) Exercise Rehabilitation Approaches for Patients with Low Back Pain
Context: Therapeutic exercises are frequently prescribed to patients with low back pain. Numerous exercise programs for patients with low back pain have been described. Many of these treatment programs are based on 1 of 2 popular rehabilitation strategies: a motor control exercise approach or a general exercise approach.
Data Sources: PubMed clinical queries from 1966 to March 2013 for keyword combinations including motor control exercise, core stability exercise, therapeutic exercise, general exercise, global exercise, local exercise, transversus abdominis, segmental stabilization, and low back pain.
Study Selection: Randomized controlled trials that assessed the effects of a motor control exercise approach, a general exercise approach, or both for patients with low back pain that were published in scientific peer-reviewed journals.
Data Extraction: Included studies underwent appraisal for exercise intervention and outcomes.
Results: Fifteen studies were identified (8, motor control exercise approach without general exercise comparison; 7, general exercise approach with or without motor control exercise approach comparison). Current evidence suggests that exercise interventions may be effective at reducing pain or disability in patients with low back pain.
Conclusion: Stabilization exercises for patients with low back pain may help to decrease pain and disability. It may not be necessary to prescribe exercises purported to restore motor control of specific muscles
Low Carbon Abundance in Type Ia Supernovae
We investigate the quantity and composition of unburned material in the outer
layers of three normal Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia): 2000dn, 2002cr and 20 04bw.
Pristine matter from a white dwarf progenitor is expected to be a mixture of
oxygen and carbon in approximately equal abundance. Using near-infrared (NIR,
0.7-2.5 microns) spectra, we find that oxygen is abundant while carbon is
severely depleted with low upper limits in the outer third of the ejected mass.
Strong features from the OI line at rest wavelength = 0.7773 microns are
observed through a wide range of expansion velocities approx. 9,000 - 18,000
km/s. This large velocity domain corresponds to a physical region of the
supernova with a large radial depth. We show that the ionization of C and O
will be substantially the same in this region. CI lines in the NIR are expected
to be 7-50 times stronger than those from OI but there is only marginal
evidence of CI in the spectra and none of CII. We deduce that for these three
normal SNe Ia, oxygen is more abundant than carbon by factors of 100 - 1,000.
MgII is also detected in a velocity range similar to that of OI. The presence
of O and Mg combined with the absence of C indicates that for these SNe Ia,
nuclear burning has reached all but the extreme outer layers; any unburned
material must have expansion velocities greater than 18,000 km/s. This result
favors deflagration to detonation transition (DD) models over pure deflagration

Characteristic velocities of stripped-envelope core-collapse supernova cores
The velocity of the inner ejecta of stripped-envelope core-collapse
supernovae (CC-SNe) is studied by means of an analysis of their nebular
spectra. Stripped-envelope CC-SNe are the result of the explosion of bare cores
of massive stars ( M), and their late-time spectra are
typically dominated by a strong [O {\sc i}] 6300, 6363 emission
line produced by the innermost, slow-moving ejecta which are not visible at
earlier times as they are located below the photosphere. A characteristic
velocity of the inner ejecta is obtained for a sample of 56 stripped-envelope
CC-SNe of different spectral types (IIb, Ib, Ic) using direct measurements of
the line width as well as spectral fitting. For most SNe, this value shows a
small scatter around 4500 km s. Observations ( days) of
stripped-envelope CC-SNe have revealed a subclass of very energetic SNe, termed
broad-lined SNe (BL-SNe) or hypernovae, which are characterised by broad
absorption lines in the early-time spectra, indicative of outer ejecta moving
at very high velocity (). SNe identified as BL in the early phase
show large variations of core velocities at late phases, with some having much
higher and some having similar velocities with respect to regular CC-SNe. This
might indicate asphericity of the inner ejecta of BL-SNe, a possibility we

The Replication Argument for Incompatibilism
In this paper, I articulate an argument for incompatibilism about moral responsibility and determinism. My argument comes in the form of an extended story, modeled loosely on Peter van Inwagenâs ârollback argumentâ scenario. I thus call it âthe replication argument.â As I aim to bring out, though the argument is inspired by so-called âmanipulationâ and âoriginal designâ arguments, the argument is not a version of either such argumentâand plausibly has advantages over both. The result, I believe, is a more convincing incompatibilist argument than those we have considered previously
