âItâs All Me⊠In One Way or Anotherâ: Transgressive Queer Embodiment in the Music Videos of Marilyn Manson
My work attempts to understand the deployment of transgressive queerness in contemporary American popular music videos. Rather than aligning with either the conservative moral panics or liberal arguments regarding free speech, I suggest that productive alternative understandings exist outside of this oppositional binary. Focusing on Marilyn Manson, particularly, I analyze how various performances open up a space of potentiality for greater imaginings of embodiment and erotics.
The music of Marilyn Manson presents a scathing critique of the cultural landscape of the United States in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Through performance, the band is critical of religion, particularly Christianity, capitalism, and numerous ideologies of normativity, including beauty and sexuality. This performative commentary manifests in a number of different forms, which can each be traced, in true Deleuzian fashion, back to different nodes along a common theoretical planeâa rhizomatic constellation of critical discourseâof queer and gender studies.
I begin by situating Manson as gesturing toward an eroticized posthuman aesthetic. Informed by diverse scholars such as feminist theorist of science Donna Haraway, gender theorists Kim Toffoletti and Judith âJackâ Halberstam, and musicologists Suzanne Cusick and Judith Peraino, I argue that Manson discursively suggests alternative ways of beingâand ways of being eroticâoutside of normative humanity. Essentially, Manson asks why, in a society so inundated with intersections of technology and the body, must we insist on notions of the ânaturalâ body as superior to other modes of being, particularly regarding the erotic? I extend this argument to examine tropes of the non-normative erotic body in Marilyn Mansonâs oeuvre in relation to theories of transgender embodiment, which is informed by my own musicological work, as well as the work of contemporary queer and transgender studies scholars.
I suggest that through constant erotic depiction on non-normative bodies, the performances of Marilyn Manson provide a space of possibility for the viewer to realize powerful alternatives to the normative mainstream discourse regarding viable ways of being and forms of erotic pleasure. As such, these polemical performances might serve to destabilize conservative notions of appropriate behavior and acceptable citizenship in contemporary American culture
Learning design Rashomon II: exploring one lesson through multiple tools
International audienceAn increasing number of tools are available to support the learning design process at different levels and from different perspectives. However, this variety can make it difficult for researchers and teachers to assess the tool that is best suited to their objectives and contexts as learning designers. Several of the tools are presented elsewhere in this issue. In this article, the aforementioned tools are used as lenses to view the same learning design narrative - an inquiry-based learning lesson on healthy eating aimed at secondary-school students - from different perspectives, in a manner inspired by the plot structure of Kurosawa's film "Rashomon". In modelling the lesson on five tools, we uncovered similarities and differences in relation to the challenges posed by modelling a particular learning scenario, the ease of implementation of the computer-interpretable products' output by the tools and their different target audiences and pedagogical specialities. This comparative analysis thus illustrates some of the current underlying issues and challenges in the field of Learning Design
An exploratory study looking at the relationship marketing techniques used in the music festival industry
There are current issues and trends in the music festival
market, which may affect the success of an event, and market saturation
is at the forefront of these issues. Previous literature, maintaining
the need for a marketing approach to festivals, identifi es the need
for maintaining strong stakeholder relationships in order to succeed
in a business environment; attention has been focused to the theory
of relationship marketing (RM) because of the recognition that this
practice is complementary to the marketing of festivals. The very nature
of the music festival as an annual, usually, 4-day event means that
effective marketing is needed to keep connections with the consumer
throughout the year. This article focuses on the RM techniques
utilised within the music festival industry from the viewpoint of the
festival organiser in an attempt to establish how festival organisations
value and monitor organisational relationships. This article explores
the extent to which these relationships are valued and managed;
furthermore, the variations between these intricate relationships
are considered by focusing on those held with the organisation â s
consumers and sponsors, the results of which have provided the
ability to establish the importance and relevance of RM to the industry
and further identify the marketing communication methods employed
to establish and maintain such relationships. In-depth, convergent
interviews have been conducted with a segment of music festival
organisers from a range of events. The results have been integrated
with the study of current literature to best exemplify these issues. It
has been established that RM has a strong role in today â s commercial
and independent music festival industry; technological advances are
enabling the organiser to support online relationships further and
increase consumer loyalty. There is a need to expand the research
further because of the complexity of organisational relationships and
the varying categories of festivals
Coronary artery calcification on routine CT has prognostic and treatment implications for all ages
Aims: Guidelines have recommended reporting coronary artery calcification (CAC) if present on chest CT imaging regardless of indication. This study assessed CAC prevalence, prognosis and the potential clinical impact of its reporting. Methods: We performed a single-centre retrospective analysis (January-December 2015) of 1400 chest CTs (200 consecutive within each age group: <40, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80-89, â„90). CTs were re-reviewed for CAC presence and severity and excluded if prior coronary intervention. Comorbidities, statin prescription and clinical outcomes (myocardial infarction [MI], stroke, all-cause mortality) were recorded. The impact of reporting CAC was assessed against pre-existing statin prescriptions. Results: 1343 patients were included (mean age 63±20 years, 56% female). Inter- and intra-observer variability for CAC presence at re-review was almost perfect (Îș 0.89, p < 0.001; Îș 0.90, p < 0.001) and for CAC grading was substantial and almost perfect (Îș 0.68, p < 0.001; Îș 0.91, p < 0.001). CAC was observed in 729/1343 (54%), more frequently in males (p < 0.001) and rising age (p < 0.001). A high proportion of patients with CAC in all age groups had no prior statin prescription (range: 42% [80-89] to 100% [<40]). The ânumber needed to reportâ CAC presence to potentially impact management across all ages was 2. 689 (51%) patients died (median follow-up 74-months). CAC presence was associated with risk of MI, stroke and all-cause mortality (p < 0.001). After adjusting for confounders, severe calcification predicted risk of all-cause mortality (HR 1.8 [1.2-2.5], p = 0.002). Conclusion: Grading of CAC was reproducible, and although prevalence rose with age, prognostic and treatment implications were maintained in all ages.</p

Design management: changing roles of the professions
This paper sets out to explore how recent changes in
procurement in construction have affected the roles that
professions play in the design process. It discusses how
professions that traditionally took the role of design
manager now find themselves participating within
previously unforeseen contexts, working in multidisciplinary
teams led by contractors and with changed
responsibilities at the design stage. Supply chain members
who were not previously involved during the early project
phases are being engaged at the earliest phases of the
project life cycle and even taking leadership roles while
designers sometimes work as supply chain partners.
A study of design in construction and other sectors shows
that in dealing with design management issues it is critical
to deepen appreciation for the unique characteristics of
design and the design process. The paper argues that
contractors and designers taking on design management
roles in a dynamic industry seeking to explore best
practice and innovative approaches to procurement and in
the delivery of projects need to acquire new skills,
management education and develop the necessary
qualities
Skills in the green economy: recycling promises in the UK e-waste management sector
In advanced economies the âgreeningâ of the economy is widely seen as promising extensive job creation and upskilling, alongside its other benefits. In popular and policy rhetoric, the growing importance of âgreen skillsâ is asserted frequently. This paper critically examines these claims within the context of the electronic waste management sector in the UK. Drawing on the cases of a non profit organisation and a small private enterprise in North West England, we observe that despite government support for developing skills in e-waste, both the development and utilisation of skills remain minimal. Critically, the relatively more skill-intensive process of reuse is substantially less profitable than recycling and resource capture. The paper concludes by noting that the expectations from the green economy for high quality jobs need to be assessed within the context of similar, misplaced celebrations of previous transformations of work in order to avoid recycling the same promises
A framework to assist in the analysis of risks and rewards of adopting BIM for SMEs in the UK
© 2017 The Author(s) Published by VGTU Press and Informa UK Limited, [trading as Taylor & Francis Group]. Building information modelling (BIM) adoption amongst larger construction firms and innovators seems to be on the increase. However, there is evidence to suggest that small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are currently lagging behind and are losing out in winning publicly funded projects. Guidance and frameworks to assist SMEs to make an informed decision about BIM adoption are currently lacking. There has been no systematic effort to date to bring together the results of research in SMEsâ BIM adoption. Consequently, this paper seeks to bridge this gap and provide a conceptual framework to give a theoretical foundation to the study of brokering risks and rewards in the adoption of BIM for project delivery. This framework is comprehensive and includes trading off risks and rewards associated with several criteria, such as stage of involvement, project value, funding, and the procurement route chosen. The approach has been validated by a representative sample of BIM users and the findings of the validation are also presented. The findings of the framework validation reveal that early design stage, project size between ÂŁ5 m and ÂŁ50 m, private funding, and integrated project delivery procurement are the best opportunities that enable SMEs to maximise the benefits and minimise the risks, when adopting BIM
Rates of Bile Acid Diarrhoea After Cholecystectomy:A Multicentre Audit
Introduction:
Bile acid diarrhoea (BAD) can occur due to disruption to the enterohepatic circulation, e.g. following cholecystectomy. Post-cholecystectomy diarrhoea has been reported in 2.1â57.2% of patients; however, this is not necessarily due to BAD. The aim of this study was to determine the rates of bile acid diarrhoea diagnosis after cholecystectomy and to consider investigation practices.
Methods:
A retrospective analysis of electronic databases from five large centres detailing patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy between 2013 and 2017 was cross-referenced with a list of patients who underwent 75SeHCAT testing. A 7-day retention time of <15% was deemed to be positive. Patient demographics and time from surgery to investigation were collected and compared for significance (pâ<â0.05).
Results:
A total of 9439 patients underwent a laparoscopic cholecystectomy between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2017 in the five centres. In total, 202 patients (2.1%) underwent investigation for diarrhoea via 75SeHCAT, of which 64 patients (31.6%) had a 75SeHCAT test result of >15%, while 62.8% of those investigated were diagnosed with bile acid diarrhoea (BAD). In total, 133 (65.8%) patients also underwent endoscopy and 74 (36.6%) patients had a CT scan. Median time from surgery to 75SeHCAT test was 672 days (SDâ±â482 days).
Discussion/Conclusion:
Only a small proportion of patients, post-cholecystectomy, were investigated for diarrhoea with significant time delay to diagnosis. The true prevalence of BAD after cholecystectomy may be much higher, and clinicians need to have an increased awareness of this condition due to its amenability to treatment. 75SeHCAT is a useful tool for diagnosis of bile acid diarrhoea
DRB1*03:01 Haplotypes: Differential Contribution to Multiple Sclerosis Risk and Specific Association with the Presence of Intrathecal IgM Bands
BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a multifactorial disease with a genetic basis. The strongest associations with the disease lie in the Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) region. However, except for the DRB1*15:01 allele, the main risk factor associated to MS so far, no consistent effect has been described for any other variant. One example is HLA-DRB1*03:01, with a heterogeneous effect across populations and studies. We postulate that those discrepancies could be due to differences in the diverse haplotypes bearing that allele. Thus, we aimed at studying the association of DRB1*03:01 with MS susceptibility considering this allele globally and stratified by haplotypes. We also evaluated the association with the presence of oligoclonal IgM bands against myelin lipids (OCMB) in cerebrospinal fluid. METHODS: Genotyping of HLA-B, -DRB1 and -DQA1 was performed in 1068 MS patients and 624 ethnically matched healthy controls. One hundred and thirty-nine MS patients were classified according to the presence (M+, 58 patients)/absence (M-, 81 patients) of OCMB. Comparisons between groups (MS patients vs. controls and M+ vs. M-) were performed with the chi-square test or the Fisher exact test. RESULTS: Association of DRB1*03:01 with MS susceptibility was observed but with different haplotypic contribution, being the ancestral haplotype (AH) 18.2 the one causing the highest risk. Comparisons between M+, M- and controls showed that the AH 18.2 was affecting only M+ individuals, conferring a risk similar to that caused by DRB1*15:01. CONCLUSIONS: The diverse DRB1*03:01-containing haplotypes contribute with different risk to MS susceptibility. The AH 18.2 causes the highest risk and affects only to individuals showing OCMB
