Presented here is a comparative reading of Latin literary texts, both in poetry and in prose: from Claudian, Augustine, Orosius; Seneca, Gellius, Macrobius; from historiographic and legislative documents: the collection of the 'Historia Augusta' lives, the constitutions in the late imperial codes. Our goal is to gather and investigate some slight – but not innocuous – ancient variants, which have been deliberately introduced by scriptores who were at the same time authors and scribes

‘Ennius ohne Vergilius’.

The common opinion is that Annales didn't have a great diffusion after publication of Aeneid and the traces of ennianisms in Lucan, Valerius Flaccus, in Punica or Thebaid are to be ascribed to mediation of Virgil. The scholar discusses instead the parallels (not only formal) between the ennians prototypes of hexametric versification and some later authors passages, in which neither Aeneid nor others ancient texts, reached to us, can be invoked as ‘Zwischenquelle’

Experimental evaluation of three leak detection and location concepts for space stations

Three leak (or precursor damage modes) detection and location concepts for space station overboard leakage were evaluated experimentally. The techniques are: (1) static and dynamic seal leak detector sensing of moisture or all gases in space cabin atmosphere, (2) active ultrasonic Lamb-wave detection of flaws or cracks in cabin wall, and (3) impact gage detection of stress waves induced in cabin pressure wall by meteoroid or orbital impact. The experimental results obtained in the program demonstrated that all three leak detection and location concepts are feasible. With further development, the methods can be integrated into an effective damage control system for advanced manned earth-orbital systems

Modeling pulsed-laser melting of embedded semiconductor nanoparticles

Pulsed-laser melting (PLM) is commonly used to achieve a fast quench rate in both thin films and nanoparticles. A model for the size evolution during PLM of nanoparticles confined in a transparent matrix, such as those created by ion-beam synthesis, is presented. A self-consistent mean-field rate equations approach that has been used successfully to model ion beam synthesis of germanium nanoparticles in silica is extended to include the PLM process. The PLM model includes classical optical absorption, multiscale heat transport by both analytical and finite difference methods, and melting kinetics for confined nanoparticles. The treatment of nucleation and coarsening behavior developed for the ion beam synthesis model is modified to allow for a non-uniform temperature gradient and for interacting liquid and solid particles with different properties. The model allows prediction of the particle size distribution after PLM under various laser fluences, starting from any particle size distribution including as-implanted or annealed simulated samples. A route for narrowing the size distribution of embedded nanoparticles is suggested, with simulated distribution widths as low as 15% of the average size
