Challenges of Engaging Local Stakeholders for Statewide Program Development Process
The University of Missouri Extension needed to develop an annual program review process that collaboratively engaged county-level stakeholders. The results from the first 2 years highlight the results, challenges, and implications of the design process. The annual review process needs to be adaptive, responsive, and reflective from year to year when engaging with local stakeholders. For example, the 2012 program review process changed from the prior year to focus on participant mind mapping to better engaged stakeholders and to produces more detailed data. The process has ensured more engagement with local stakeholders and generated information helpful to regional faculty members
Pilot of ‘Families for Health’ : community-based family intervention for obesity
Objective - To develop and evaluate ‘Families for Health’ - a new community based family intervention for childhood obesity.
Design – Programme development, pilot study and evaluation using intention-to-treat analysis.
Setting – Coventry, England
Participants – 27 overweight or obese children aged 7-13 years (18 girls, 9 boys) and their parents, from 21 families.
Intervention – ‘Families for Health’ is a 12 week programme with parallel groups for parents and children, addressing parenting, lifestyle change and social & emotional development.
Main Outcome Measures – Primary: change in baseline BMI z-score at end of programme (3 months) and 9 month follow-up. Attendance, drop-out, parents’ perception of programme, child’s quality of life and self esteem, parental mental health, parent-child relationships and lifestyle changes were also measured. Results: Attendance rate was 62%, with 18 of the 27 (67%) children completing the
programme. For the 22 children with follow-up data (including 4 drop-outs), BMI z-score was reduced by -0.18 (95%CI -0.30 to -0.05) at end of programme and by -0.21 (-0.35 to -0.07) at 9 months. Statistically significant improvements were observed in children’s quality of life and lifestyle (reduced sedentary behaviour, increased steps and reduced exposure to unhealthy foods), child-parent relationships and parents’ mental health. Fruit and vegetable consumption, participation in moderate/vigorous exercise and children’s self-esteem did not change significantly. Topics on parenting skills, activity
and food were rated as helpful and were used with confidence by the majority of parents.
Conclusions
Families for Health is a promising new childhood obesity intervention. Definitive evaluation of its clinical effectiveness by randomised controlled trial is now required

Methodology for Analysis of Diet Grit Size on Molar Attrition for Fourche Maline and Caddo People
Using the Murphy (1959) system for scoring the degree of dentin exposure, Fourche Maline (Woodland) molars show a greater attrition rate than Caddo (Mississippian) molars. Archeological evidence suggests that this differential in attrition rates is caused by the use of stone grinders for food preparation in the Fourche Maline culture and their absence among the Caddo. Analysis of scratches on the occlusal surface of molars from these samples confirms this hypothesis. Several techniques for observing these scratches and reconstructing the grit sizes and grit particle frequencies responsible for this differential abrasion are evaluated
Improving Reliability of Subject-Level Resting-State fMRI Parcellation with Shrinkage Estimators
A recent interest in resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging
(rsfMRI) lies in subdividing the human brain into anatomically and functionally
distinct regions of interest. For example, brain parcellation is often used for
defining the network nodes in connectivity studies. While inference has
traditionally been performed on group-level data, there is a growing interest
in parcellating single subject data. However, this is difficult due to the low
signal-to-noise ratio of rsfMRI data, combined with typically short scan
lengths. A large number of brain parcellation approaches employ clustering,
which begins with a measure of similarity or distance between voxels. The goal
of this work is to improve the reproducibility of single-subject parcellation
using shrinkage estimators of such measures, allowing the noisy
subject-specific estimator to "borrow strength" in a principled manner from a
larger population of subjects. We present several empirical Bayes shrinkage
estimators and outline methods for shrinkage when multiple scans are not
available for each subject. We perform shrinkage on raw intervoxel correlation
estimates and use both raw and shrinkage estimates to produce parcellations by
performing clustering on the voxels. Our proposed method is agnostic to the
choice of clustering method and can be used as a pre-processing step for any
clustering algorithm. Using two datasets---a simulated dataset where the true
parcellation is known and is subject-specific and a test-retest dataset
consisting of two 7-minute rsfMRI scans from 20 subjects---we show that
parcellations produced from shrinkage correlation estimates have higher
reliability and validity than those produced from raw estimates. Application to
test-retest data shows that using shrinkage estimators increases the
reproducibility of subject-specific parcellations of the motor cortex by up to

Look, Think, Act: Using Critical Action Research to Sustain Reform in Complex Teaching/Learning Ecologies
This paper argues that educators interested in sustainability should look to complexity science for guiding principles. When we view our classrooms and campuses as living, dynamic ecologies, we can, as insiders, make sense of what might otherwise seem chaotic or meaningless. This perspective enables us not only to describe and explain what is happening around us, but also to use our findings to influence emerging patterns across our classrooms, campuses, or our larger communities. We suggest that educators use a Look, Think, Act cycle recommended by Ernie Stringer to encourage and support sustainable school reform
A hierarchy of happiness? Mokken scaling analysis of the Oxford Happiness Inventory
The items of the Oxford Happiness Inventory (OHI, a self-report assessment of happiness, are subjected to an analysis for hierarchy among its items. By using Mokken scaling analyses we can assess whether items can reliably be ordered between persons as severity indicators on a latent trait; in this case, a latent trait of Happiness. OHI item-level data from 1024 participants were entered into the Mokken Scaling Procedure (MSP) seeking reliable scales with H > 0.30. 12 OHI items formed a reliable and statistically significant hierarchy. However, the MSP values indicate a 'weak' scale. The 'most difficult' (happiest) item on the scale is 'feeling energetic' and the 'least difficult' (least happy) is 'I have fun'. Items in the scale are consistent with what is already known about both happiness and low mood. The reduction in the OHI's items from 29 to 12 in the Mokken scale may have utility making it more accessible to participants as well as identifying items with reliably different levels of 'difficulty'.
