Apparatus for mixing solutions in low gravity environments

    Get PDF
An apparatus is disclosed for allowing mixing of solutions in low gravity environments so as to carry out crystallization of proteins and other small molecules or other chemical syntheses, under conditions that maximize crystal growth and minimize disruptive turbulent effects. The apparatus is comprised of a housing, a plurality of chambers, and a cylindrical rotatable valve disposed between at least two of the chambers, said valve having an internal passageway so as to allow fluid movement between the chambers by rotation of the valve. In an alternate embodiment of the invention, a valve is provided having an additional internal passage way so that fluid from a third chamber can be mixed with the fluids of the first two chambers. This alternate embodiment of the invention is particularly desirable when it is necessary to provide a termination step to the crystal growth, or if a second synthetic step is required

Factors that Lead to Women Being Elected to State Legislatures

    Get PDF
The question being posed in the study is “What factors predict the percentage of women in a state legislature?”. The units of analysis are the 50 states. The independent variables investigated are the percentage of votes for Trump in the 2016 election per state, population density per square mile, percentage population 65 and older per state, percentage with a bachelor’s degree or higher, 2018 per capita income, and the region of each state. The dependent value is the percentage of women elected in state legislatures. The relationship between the independent and dependent variables is expressed by five scatterplots and an analysis of variance (ANOVA). Among the independent variables, the percentage of votes for Trump in the 2016 election per state, percentage with a bachelor’s degree or higher, and 2018 per capita income were statistically significant. The percentage of votes for Trump in the 2016 election per state had a negative correlation while the other two had a positive correlation. The ANOVA showed that region explains 28% of the variance in the percentage of women elected into state legislatures

Standards of Judicial Review in the Virginia Administrative Process Act

Section 9-6.14:17 of the Virginia Administrative Process Act sets forth two standards by which courts may review the validity of a state agency\u27s decisions. In formal rulemaking and adjudicatory proceedings, the statute requires an agency to keep a record of all evidence it receives and to make decisions based on this record. Upon review, a court will look to see if there is substantial evidence in the record to support the agency\u27s findings of fact. In informal rulemaking and adjudicatory proceedings, the statute does not require an agency to keep an evidentiary record. If the agency has not voluntarily made a record, the reviewing court will look at the agency file, minutes, and records of its proceedings, and allow the agency to add more information or to prove facts in court if necessary to complete the impromptu record. In such a case, the court reviewing the agency\u27s decision will only check to see whether the result reached by the agency could reasonably be said, on all such proofs, to be within the scope of the legal authority of the agency

Independently innovative: Teachers and change in successful schools

This study explores teachers\u27 perceptions of school change and leadership. The study is guided by the question: In an innovative independent school, how do teachers perceive deliberate change efforts and relate to the leaders who lead them. Other issues considered are the role of school culture, professional development and institutional goals in an effective change process. This research is distinctive in that it examines school change from the teachers\u27 perspective and was conducted in a school that had previously demonstrated positive growth. The result is a qualitative, case study of one exemplary, independent school. In the summer and fall of 2010, the researcher gathered artifacts and conducted two focus groups and two follow up interviews with teacher-participants. From each focus group one participant was chosen by lottery to be interviewed. Participants discussed the change process they experienced at their school. Data was tape recorded, transcribed, and analyzed for categories and themes. The researcher compared this data to existing literature, drew inferences, and generated theory. Findings include an overarching theme and three sub-themes pertaining to leadership and school change. The overarching theme demonstrated that when leaders address teachers\u27 personal and professional needs, they set the stage for positive school change. The first sub-theme was the importance of faculty and leaders working together to identify both vexing problems to solve and worthy goals to accomplish. A second subtheme illuminates the leaders built the faculty by helping teachers to improve, by hiring well, and by firing when improvement could not occur. The third sub-theme reinforces the idea that teachers are motivated to change because of the relationships they and the leaders share. Teachers are motivated to accept school initiatives that reflect a commitment to the school\u27s mission and philosophy

The Role of the History of Mathematics in Middle School.

    Get PDF
It is the author\u27s belief that middle school mathematics is greatly taught in isolation with little or no mention of its origin. Teaching mathematics from a historical perspective will lead to greater understanding, student inspiration, motivation, excitement, varying levels of learning, and appreciation for this subject. This thesis will develop four units that will incorporate original source documents and selected historical topics surrounding computation, numbers, and early calculating devices. Many of the units will center on the Rhind Papyrus and The Treviso Arithmetic. These units will be appropriate to middle school, with an emphasis on 6th grade
