Editors as gatekeepers of responsible science

    Get PDF
Journal article is the best publicly visible documentation of research activity so that fraud or misconduct in science is often first discovered in scientific journals. Journal editors are responsible for the integrity of the record they publish in their journals, but they may often find it dificult to ensure the full integrity of the published work, particularly if they work in small scientific communities. The support for editors is provided by the larger editorial community and well-developed guidelines for good publishing practice. Particularly useful for editors are the guidelines from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the largest editorial organization dealing with actual ethical problems of journal editors. COPE has developed ethics 0 ow charts – algorithms for editors to follow when they have an ethical problem in their journals. These charts provide also important information for authors about what they may expect from journal editors as gatekeepers not only of good science but of responsible science

Acute Oxcarbazepine-Induced Hepatotoxicity in a Patient Susceptible to Developing Drug-Induced Liver Injury

Oxcarbazepine (OXC) is generally accepted as a drug without risk of severe drug-induced hepatotoxicity, but according to recently reported pharmacovigilance data this statement has been challenged. However, in the literature there have been no reports of acute OXC-induced hepatotoxicity without systemic manifestations of Drug Rash with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) syndrome. We present a female with seizures one month after delivery who had borderline elevated liver enzymes prior to the initiation of OXC treatment. Two weeks after introducing OXC, highly elevated liver enzymes were found. After discontinuation of OXC the enzymes continued to rise for another week, and afterward gradually decreased. The causal relationship with OXC intake was determined to be highly probable. Two years later, the transitory elevation of liver enzymes was observed during the treatment of acute tonsilopharingitis with amoxicillin + clavulanic acid. The repeated elevation of liver enzymes related to use of different drugs might indicate patient`s susceptibility for drug induced liver injuries. We suggest that monitoring of liver function tests would be clinically rational for early detection of acute OXC-induced liver hepatotoxicity in the patients with clinical and/or laboratory features which might be interpreted as possible risk factors of the increased susceptibility to drug induced liver injuries

    New frontiers of peer review

This news article introduces a new COST Action entitled PEERE (TD1306), which stands for New Frontiers of Peer Review (PEERE). PEERE is a trans-domain proposal which brings together researchers from various different disciplines and science stake-holders for the purpose of reviewing the process of peer review. PEERE officially began in May 2014 and will end in May 2018. Thirty-one countries, including Malta, are currently participating in the Action. In order to set the context in which this COST Action was initiated, we first look very briefly at the history of the process of peer review and various models of peer review currently in use. We then share what this COST Action hopes to achieve.peer-reviewe

The objective of this project is to present a proposal of research included in the plan for the following three years, which is required in November 2005 by the academic University concourse. The proposal is related to the "Ecología y Medio Ambiente" assignments. This subject belongs to the fourth year of the degree course in architecture during its second period. Therefore this research is in the stage of compilation and study cases selection. The objective of methodology applied is to demonstrate the importance of considering bioclimatic aspects of vernacular architecture in the design criteria definition for social housing and to incorporate them as a regulation its development, in order to obtain cultural identification and appropriation by the users.

This paper presents results of an advice to the Provincial Housing Institute of Chubut to develop residential prototypes for energy saving and efficiency. We worked on the basis of typical residential units of local housing plans for two bioclimatic zones. The building envelope was adjusted to the IRAM Norms and new prototypes with bioclimatic criteria and integrated solar systems were developed to analyze its thermal-energy performance in successive constructive and morphological changes in each category. It was verified the importance of the orientations and microclimate conditions in the design of urbanizations and subdivisions, to optimize the performance of solar thermal systems and unit performance. These studies and the possibility to build reference prototypes, provided in the Project, will allow to check post occupancy performance of the units and whether it corresponds with the results obtained, making possible to assess user behavior in a passive house.Asociación Argentina de Energías Renovables y Medio Ambiente (ASADES

Stakeholders' Experiences of Research Integrity Support in Universities:A Qualitative Study in three European Countries

Fostering research integrity (RI) increasingly focuses on normative guidance and supportive measures within institutions. To be successful, the implementation of support should be informed by stakeholders’ experiences of RI support. This study aims to explore experiences of RI support in Dutch, Spanish and Croatian universities. In total, 59 stakeholders (Netherlands n = 25, Spain n = 17, Croatia n = 17) participated in 16 focus groups in three European countries. Global themes on RI support experiences were identified by thematic analysis. Themes identified were: ‘RI governance and institutional implementation’, ‘RI roles and structures’, ‘RI education and supervision’, and ‘Infrastructure, technology and tools supporting daily practice’. Experiences of support differed between countries in relation to: the efforts to translate norms into practice; the extent to which RI oversight was a responsibility of RE structures, or separate RI structures; and the availability of support close to research practice, such as training, responsible supervision, and adequate tools and infrastructure. The study reinforces the importance of a whole institutional approach to RI, embedded within local jurisdictions, rules, and practices. A whole institutional approach puts the emphasis of responsibility on institutions rather than individual researchers. When such an approach is lacking, some stakeholders look for intervention by authorities, such as funders, outside of the university.
