Measurements of critical current diffraction patterns in annular Josephson junctions
We report systematic measurements of the critical current versus magnetic
field patterns of annular Josephson junctions in a wide magnetic field range. A
modulation of the envelope of the pattern, which depends on the junction width,
is observed. The data are compared with theory and good agreement is found.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Whispering Vortices
Experiments indicating the excitation of whispering gallery type
electromagnetic modes by a vortex moving in an annular Josephson junction are
reported. At relativistic velocities the Josephson vortex interacts with the
modes of the superconducting stripline resonator giving rise to novel
resonances on the current-voltage characteristic of the junction. The
experimental data are in good agreement with analysis and numerical

Chlamydophila pecorum in fetuses of mediterranean buffalo (bubalus bubalis) bred in Italy
In order to study the role played by the different species of Chlamydophila in causing abortions in Mediterranean buffalo, the Authors examined 164 fetuses from 80 different buffalo herds in Southern Italy. Three fetuses, came from two different herds, were positive. Our study confirms the pathogenic role of C. pecorum in buffalo, not only as a cause of neuropathology in calves but as an infectious abortive agent
Experimental investigation of flux motion in exponentially shaped Josephson junctions
We report experimental and numerical analysis of expontentially shaped long
Josephson junctions with lateral current injection. Quasi-linear flux flow
branches are observed in the current-voltage characteristic of the junctions in
the absence of magnetic field. A strongly asymmetric response to an applied
magnetic field is also exhibited by the junctions. Experimental data are found
in agreement with numerical predictions and demonstrate the existence of a
geometry-induced potential experienced by the flux quanta in nonuniform width

Testing the Kibble-Zurek Scenario with Annular Josephson Tunnel Junctions
In parallel with Kibble's description of the onset of phase transitions in
the early universe, Zurek has provided a simple picture for the onset of phase
transitions in condensed matter systems, strongly supported by agreement with
experiments in He3. In this letter we show how experiments with annular
Josephson tunnel Junctions can and do provide further support for this

Development of a Superconducting Claw-Pole Linear Test-Rig
Superconducting generators can help to reduce the cost of energy for large offshore wind turbines, where the size and mass of the generator have a direct effect on the installation cost. However, existing superconducting generators are not as reliable as the alternative technologies. In this paper, a linear test prototype for a novel superconducting claw-pole topology, which has a stationary superconducting coil that eliminates the cryocooler coupler will be presented. A novel extracellular role for tissue transglutaminase in matrix-bound VEGF-mediated angiogenesis
The importance of tissue transglutaminase (TG2) in angiogenesis is unclear and contradictory. Here we show that inhibition of extracellular TG2 protein crosslinking or downregulation of TG2 expression leads to inhibition of angiogenesis in cell culture, the aorta ring assay and in vivo models. In a human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) co-culture model, inhibition of extracellular TG2 activity can halt the progression of angiogenesis, even when introduced after tubule formation has commenced and after addition of excess vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). In both cases, this leads to a significant reduction in tubule branching. Knockdown of TG2 by short hairpin (shRNA) results in inhibition of HUVEC migration and tubule formation, which can be restored by add back of wt TG2, but not by the transamidation-defective but GTP-binding mutant W241A. TG2 inhibition results in inhibition of fibronectin deposition in HUVEC monocultures with a parallel reduction in matrix-bound VEGFA, leading to a reduction in phosphorylated VEGF receptor 2 (VEGFR2) at Tyr1214 and its downstream effectors Akt and ERK1/2, and importantly its association with b1 integrin. We propose a mechanism for the involvement of matrix-bound VEGFA in angiogenesis that is dependent on extracellular TG2-related activity
