Oil Spill Modeling in Sea Ice Covered Ocean

The ongoing reduction in extent and thickness of sea ice in the Arctic allows the expansion of shipping activity and oil exploration in the high north, and with that a potential increased risk of oil spill in ice covered areas. This thesis asses the response of two oil-in-ice surface drift models implemented in an open-source Lagrangian framework and forced by four dif- ferent ice-ocean products (RIOPS, TOPAZ4 real-time forecast system, TOPAZ4 reanalysis and SVIM). Both approaches were evaluated over three sets of simulations: (I) a field experiment conducted in the Barents Sea marginal ice zone in 2009; (II) observed trajectories of buoys in the ice pack and in the Barents Sea marginal ice zone; and (III) stochastic simulations (960 runs, from 1998 to 2017) to reproduce a hypothetical oil spill in the Kara Sea. Results from experiments (I) and (II) indicate that the two drift models provide similar response both in the ice pack and the marginal ice zone under the same forcing. It was also found that finer horizontal resolution ice-ocean products (RIOPS and SVIM) did not reproduce better the ob- served drifts. The experiment (III) revealed that the sea ice concentration (%) field dictates the spread, the predominant direction of trajectories and the distance (km) traveled by the cloud of particles (SVIM: -1.41 km/% and TOPAZ4 reanalysis: -1.24 km/%).Master's Thesis in Meteorology and OceanographyGEOF399MAMN-GEO

Brazil in the Twenty-First-Century International Trade: Challenges and Opportunities

This chapter discusses the impacts of globalization on international trade patterns and the required shifts in trade policies. Highlighting the effects of production fragmentation, geographic dispersion and the expansion of global value chains (GVCs), the chapter outlines the Brazilian experience to illustrate the difficulties that various countries face in acknowledging this economic reality and providing appropriate policy responses. It draws on the global value chains literature to analyze Brazil’s foreign trade policies implemented during the recent ruling of the Labor Party (PT) presidents Lula da Silva and Dilma Rousseff (2003 to 2015), discussing the Brazilian strategy (or the lack of one) to integrate into global value chains. Results of this exercise have led to the conclusion that a non–GVC-oriented trade policy has allowed Brazil to integrate only superficially into globalized international production and commercial flows. The chapter concludes providing an outlook on the policy shifts required for increasing Brazil’s insertion into global value chains and boosting a more prominent role in international trade

Fuzzy logic for structural system control

This paper provides some information and numerical tests that aims to investigate the use of a Fuzzy Controller applied to control systems. Some advantages are reported regarding the use of this controller, such as the characteristic ease of implementation due to its semantic feature in the statement of the control rules. On the other hand, it is also hypothesized that these systems have a lower performance loss when the system to be controlled is nonlinear or has time varying parameters. Numerical tests are performed using modal LQR optimal control and Fuzzy control of non-collocated systems with full state feedback in a twodimensional structure. The paper proposes a way of designing a controller that may be a supervisory Fuzzy controller for a traditional controller or even a fuzzy controller independent from the traditional control, consisting on individual mode controllers. Assessment of photovoltaic generation, supply, and sustainability: a case study of municipalities in São Paulo state

Energy consumption has been increasing together with population growth and the consequences for energy production widely generate discussions under the aspect of environmental outcome and supply reliability and quality. This paper proposes a methodology that allows the estimation of the potential for cities to be more independent in terms of centralized generation and distribution of electricity considering photovoltaic sources. Sustainability and environmental performance are also discussed. The methodology aims to assess some municipalities in the São Paulo state. The results showed high potential for photovoltaic supply in those municipalities under the considered conditions indicating the possibility for structuring a decentralized generation model where cities would be more independent in electricity supply. The B chromosomes of the African cichlid fish Haplochromis obliquidens harbour 18S rRNA gene copies

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Diverse plant and animal species have B chromosomes, also known as accessory, extra or supernumerary chromosomes. Despite being widely distributed among different taxa, the genomic nature and genetic behavior of B chromosomes are still poorly understood.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In this study we describe the occurrence of B chromosomes in the African cichlid fish <it>Haplochromis obliquidens</it>. One or two large B chromosome(s) occurring in 39.6% of the analyzed individuals (both male and female) were identified. To better characterize the karyotype and assess the nature of the B chromosomes, fluorescence <it>in situ </it>hybridization (FISH) was performed using probes for telomeric DNA repeats, 18S and 5S rRNA genes, SATA centromeric satellites, and bacterial artificial chromosomes (BACs) enriched in repeated DNA sequences. The B chromosomes are enriched in repeated DNAs, especially non-active 18S rRNA gene-like sequences.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our results suggest that the B chromosome could have originated from rDNA bearing subtelo/acrocentric A chromosomes through formation of an isochromosome, or by accumulation of repeated DNAs and rRNA gene-like sequences in a small proto-B chromosome derived from the A complement.</p
