    Get PDF

    Amyloid-based nanosensors and nanodevices

This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2014Self-assembling amyloid-like peptides and proteins give rise to promising biomaterials with potential applications in many fields. Amyloid structures are formed by the process of molecular recognition and self-assembly, wherein a peptide or protein monomer spontaneously self-associates into dimers and oligomers and subsequently into supramolecular aggregates, finally resulting in condensed fibrils. Mature amyloid fibrils possess a quasi-crystalline structure featuring a characteristic fiber diffraction pattern and have well-defined properties, in contrast to many amorphous protein aggregates that arise when proteins misfold. Core sequences of four to seven amino acids have been identified within natural amyloid proteins. They are capable to form amyloid fibers and fibrils and have been used as amyloid model structures, simplifying the investigations on amyloid structures due to their small size. Recent studies have highlighted the use of self-assembled amyloid-based fibers as nanomaterials. Here, we discuss the latest advances and the major challenges in developing amyloids for future applications in nanotechnology and nanomedicine, with the focus on development of sensors to study protein–ligand interactions. This work is supported by the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (Biomedical Research Council, Agency for Science, Technology and Research, Singapore). INTRODUCTION: American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) and leprosy share common areas of prevalence, but reports of coinfection are scarce. METHODS: We report a series of 9 ATL-leprosy cases and discuss the association. An integrative diagram to analyze the clinico-immunological features of coinfection with both diseases. RESULTS: Nine patients with leishmaniasis (5 cutaneous, 3 mucocutaneous, 1 disseminated case) exhibited concurrent infection with distinct clinical forms of leprosy. Our diagram-based analysis evidenced a divergent clinico-immunological spectrum for each disease in 8 out of 9 cases. CONCLUSIONS: The spectrum of ATL-leprosy comorbidity suggests that the host has a specific immune response against each pathogen

The purpose of this research project is to conduct a comparative study between the discrete simulation languages BPSim and SIMAN using the Bizagi Modeler and Arena Simulation tools in a case study. This is done to determine which language presents better capabilities for simulating the chosen business process (service process) and optimizing the simulation in terms of processing time. The data provided will be backed by the Grau Essalud Emergency Hospital. Furthermore, the methodology used in this research is in line with the development of an initial simulation model in the first stage (AS-IS) and two redesigned models under the author Marlon Dumas' theory (TO-BE) in the second and third stage, respectively. It is important to note that the development of the models in each of the stages is in line with the four levels of simulation proposed by the BPSim language and the process-based approach for SIMAN. Finally, although this instance of the present study showed us that the main qualitative differences are evidenced in the ease with which a business process can be simulated using the BPSim methodology in relation to SIMAN, the quantitative results show a significant difference in the reduction of simulation times when using the SIMAN language over BPSim when simulating the redesigned scenarios

Doping effects in low dimensional antiferromagnets

The study of impurities in low dimensional antiferromagnets has been a very active field in magnetism ever since the discovery of high temperature superconductivity. One of the most dramatic effects is the appearance of large Knight shifts in a long range around non-magnetic impurities in an antiferromagnetic background. The dependence of the Knight shifts on distance and temperature visualizes the correlations in the system. In this work we present the results for Knight shifts around a single vacancy in the one and two dimensional Heisenberg model.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures. DEC-10/2021/IDUB/IV.2/EUROPIUM 030/RID/2018/19The paper focuses on researching the effect of fatigue loading on metallic structure, lifetime, and fracture surface topographies in AISI H13 steel specimens obtained by selective laser melting (SLM). The topography of the fracture surfaces was measured over their entire area, according to the entire total area method, with an optical three-dimensional surface measurement system. The fatigue results of the SLM 3D printed steel specimens were compared with those reported for conventionally manufactured 13H steel. The investigation also considers the roughness of the specimens’ side surface. Moreover, the fractographic evaluation conducted using scanning electron microscopy confirms that the predominant fracture mechanism is transgranular fracture. Microtomography done after mechanical loading also showed the influence of the stress level on the porosity distribution. Both fractographic and Micro-CT investigations confirm that higher stresses result in coarser and much more uniform porosity observed in fractured samples. These comprehensive quantitative and qualitative fracture analyses are beneficial to predict the failure conditions of SLM steel parts, especially in the case of fatigue damage. From the quantitative analysis of the H13 SLM-manufactured fracture surface topography, it was possible to conclude that the larger the loadings acting on the specimen, the rougher the fracture surface because the ductile fracture mode dominates. It has also been proven that the porosity degree changes along the length of the sample for the most stressed specimens.publishersversionepub_ahead_of_prin

Given the challenges that the so-called Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have presented for education in general, what has been the role of historical knowledge for the training of young workers? The thoughts on this issue are presented by this work through the analysis of a pedagogical action developed with students of integrated technical courses of the Industrial Technical College of Santa Maria (CTISM). This has resulted in the design of a digital portfolio containing approaches on technical achievements produced by social groups during the historical period commonly identified as modernity. The method used to discuss on the activity was the descriptive-analytic that can point out as reasons for understanding the formalized problem and, from there, indicate the possibilities of overcoming it. The theoretical approach chosen for the analysis was presented by Pinto (2005) for whom man, being a technical animal, is produced in the measure of his technical actions. Thus, the relevance of reflection lies in the possibility of pedagogical activity to contribute to the understanding of the technique as a product of human groups' social history.
