Bridging Anthropology and Literature through Indian Writing in English
In his 2003 article, “A Strange Romance: Anthropology and Literature” Clifford Geertz discusses the relationship between these two disciplines. Geertz understands that anthropology cannot be solely based on a cold scientific analysis of people and customs as it is almost impossible to perform cultural interpretation absent of subjectivity. The anthropologist’s interpretation adds a touch of creativity to ethnography, bringing it closer to fictional narratives. He also points out the risk of anthropologists losing credibility and objectivity by allowing themselves this subjectivity. The anthropologist uses his/her perspective and interpretation to construct a narrative. As every custom, ritual or tradition is charged with metaphor, symbolism, plot and other stylistic features of literature, it becomes subject to many possible readings and meanings through which other narratives are recreated. For the purpose of this paper I am fundamentally concerned with exploring the “romance” between anthropology and literature from a theoretical perspective. In my thesis I will be further extending this theoretical reading in a more thorough analysis of the novels of Arundhati Roy and Kiran Desai as examples of narratives that bridge these two disciplines.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
In contemporary societies the use of energy is essential. The largest percentage of the energy used comes from fossil fuels. However, this feature is an increasingly scarce and their reserves are declining substantially unable to keep up with growing energy use in the World. Developed countries have reached a state in which they are entirely dependent on energy and developing countries want to grow and reach similar states of development that is not possible without energy. If current trends remain, the CO2 emissions caused by fossil fuels, will increase about 45% by 2030. The medium and long term, the severity of the effects of climate change depends on the ability to implement mitigation measures. It is urgent to find a balance between consumption and availability and access to energy for sustainable development
Democracy and Economic Development: a Fuzzy Classification Approach
The aim of this work is to (1) analyse whether countries differ on political indicators (democracy, rule of law, government effectiveness and corruption) and (2) study whether countries with different political profiles are associated with different levels of economic, human development and gender-related development indicators. Using a fuzzy classification approach (fuzzy k-means algorithm), we propose a typology of 124 countries based on 10 political variables. Six segments are identified; these political groups implicate the access to different levels of economic and human development. In this study evidence of a positive but not perfect relationship between democracy and economic and human development is observed, thus presenting new insights for the understanding of the heterogeneity of behaviors relatively to political indicators.Democracy, Economic Development, Fuzzy k-means
Antioxidants of natural plant origins: from sources to food industry applications
ReviewIn recent years, great interest has been focused on using natural antioxidants in food
products, due to studies indicating possible adverse effects that may be related to the consumption of
synthetic antioxidants. A variety of plant materials are known to be natural sources of antioxidants,
such as herbs, spices, seeds, fruits and vegetables. The interest in these natural components is
not only due to their biological value, but also to their economic impact, as most of them may be
extracted from food by-products and under-exploited plant species. This article provides an overview
of current knowledge on natural antioxidants: their sources, extraction methods and stabilization
processes. In addition, recent studies on their applications in the food industry are also addressed;
namely, as preservatives in different food products and in active films for packaging purposes and

Share the occurrence of events in the area of health care is critical to the implementation of preventive mechanisms to enhance patient safety. Objective: To know the nurses ' adherence to the event notification services inpatient and intensive care units of a central hospital. Methodology: Exploratory study, descriptive, quantitative approach. Results: In relation to events in which the damage is tragic, the vast majority of the time are notified. In relation to fall, all the professionals with whom this event occurred, notified. The nurses as major barriers to event notification: Oblivion due to be a lot of work; the evolution of the case render unnecessary the notification and application for notification be complicated, not be intuitive. Conclusions: After collecting data when events occur that nurses notify us a few times. The results obtained indicate some guidelines for the improvement of the safety culture in the institution, subject to the need for training in the area of security and proactive notification of events
The consumption paradigm is changing. Consumers are more
attentive to what they consume and to the sustainability questions
addressed to those products. This change was driven by the
healthy label given to natural products but also by the urgent need
to find more sustainable sources of raw materials and to
implement processes as a way to mitigate climate changes,
without compromising the quality and affecting the price of the
final product. Pigments are compounds that can be obtained from
various sources of biomass, being recognized by their numerous
biological activities. Due to their spectral and biological properties,
pigments can find application in many fields, from food to
cosmetics, nutraceutics, and medicine. However, conventional
methodologies to obtain pigments demand very often the use of
costly equipment and/or toxic organic solvents. In this work,
alternative methodologies to extract and purify pigments from
algae of were developed. Simple and efficient methodologies
mostly based on aqueous solvents were used to recover one or
more pigments from algae within a blue biorefinery framework. In
all chapters, a variety of solvents were screened, and operational
conditions were studied and optimized in order to reach high
yields of extractions and/or purities. Aqueous solutions of
tensioactive ionic liquids have shown great potential for the
recovery of hydrophobic pigments such as chlorophylls and
carotenoids. In the other hand, induced precipitation of proteins is
shown to be a good alternative for the selective precipitation (and
further purification) of phycobiliproteins. Economic and
environmental impacts were assessed and encouraging results
were obtained from both perspectives, leading us to believe in the
potential for the industrial implementation of some of the results
here obtained.O paradigma do consumo está a mudar.
a sustentabilidade desses produtos.
do produto final.
