Prime minister tony blair's speech at the Annual Labour Party Conference 2003: an analysis of exigence and transitivity based on CDA and SFL
O discurso foi capturado do jornal eletrônico The Guardian do Reino Unido.
Tertiary activities and informality: quantitative importance and interconnections within the economy in Brazil
This paper studies the importance of the Tertiary sector and the informal sector for the Brazilian economy, making an interconnection between them and with them and the rest of the economy and the formal sector. To do so, this work makes use of the data presented in the System of National Accounts and the National Survey of Households (PNAD), both from IBGE, and the Leontief model. The results show: a) the importance of the Tertiary sector for the Brazilian economy in terms of employment (around 61% of the occupied persons), and income generation (around 67% of the economy Value Added); b) the high share of the informal sector in the Brazilian economy (around 58% of the occupied persons and 34% of the income); c) the combination of these factors results in an economy with low wages and salaries and with an high concentration of income; and d) that the present productive structure of the Brazilian economy contributes to the concentration of income in the country.Tertiary Activities; Informality; Input-Output; Employment
Efficiency tests in the Iberian stock markets
This paper investigates the efficiency of the two major stock indexes of the Iberian Peninsula, the Portuguese Stock Index (PSI-20) and the Spanish Stock Index (IBEX-35). We used daily data from January 1993 to September 2001 for the Portuguese stock index and daily data from October 1990 to September 2001 for the Spanish stock index. Serial correlations, unit root tests and variance ratio tests are used to test the efficiency of these two stock indexes. Although the complementary of these tests, we used all of them to get a higher robustness of the conclusions. We examined serial correlation coefficients for successive stock index changes to test whether they are statistically equal to zero to establish the random walk nature of stock indexes. The augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test are used to test the null hypothesis that the series has a unit root and the variance ratio tests are used to examine the random walk hypothesis for the series of these two stock indexes. The results of the serial correlations, unit root tests and variance ratio tests provide ambiguous evidence for the random walk hypothesis. The empirical evidence from the unit root tests do not reject the efficient market hypothesis for the two stock indexes, while the results from the variance ratio tests and serial correlations do.stock indexes, market efficiency, unit roots
This descriptive-correlational study aimed to evaluate the relation between patients' satisfaction with information they have about their disease and its morbidity. A questionnaire was applied in two samples: 235 individuals with recent experience of illness (network sampling) and 254 hospitalized cancer patients post-surgery (consecutive sampling). The Escala de Conhecimentos sobre a Doença(12) [Patients' Satisfaction with Information Questionnaire - PSIQ] and the Rotterdam Symptom Checklist were used. Results show that participants were dissatisfied with information received and this dissatisfaction was more pronounced in hospitalized patients.
The objective of the present thesis was to compare the levels of circulating
endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), circulating endothelial cells (CECs), and
hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) between patients with heart failure with reduced
ejection fraction (HFrEF) and a group of subjects with cardiovascular risk factors.
We also compared the levels of circulating EPCs, CECs, and HSCs between
subgroups regarding the presence of cardiovascular risk factors (e.g. diabetes
mellitus) and the etiology of heart failure (HF). To achieved this, whole peripheral
blood was drawn from patients previously diagnosed with HFrEF (n = 42) and
age-matched subjects presenting similar cardiovascular risk factors but without
established cardiovascular disease (n = 42). Then, a combination of markers was
used in peripheral blood samples in order to assess the number of circulating
EPCs, CECs, and HSCs via flow cytometry analysis. Patients with HFrEF had
significantly decreased levels of circulating EPCs (5.28 x 10-3 ± 6.83 x 10-4 % vs
7.76 x 10-3 ± 4.91 x 10-4 %, P ≤ 0.001) and CECs (5.11 x 10-3 ± 7.87 x 10-4 % vs
6.51 x 10-3 ± 5.21 x 10-4 %, P = 0.005) compared to subjects with cardiovascular
risk factors. However, levels of HSCs were not significantly different between the
two groups (P = 0.590). Additionally, CECs (6.69 x 10-3 ± 6.38 x 10-3 % vs 3.61 x
10-3 ± 2.71 x 10-3 %, P = 0.057) tended to circulate in higher number in patients
with ischemic HF compared to patients with non-ischemic HF. Patients with
HFrEF and diagnosed as overweight/obese had significantly higher levels of
circulating EPCs (6.10 x 10-3 ± 4.78 x 10-3 % vs 4.13 x 10-3 ± 3.55 x 10-3 %, P =
0.043) and CECs (6.27 x 10-3 ± 5.66 x 10-3 % vs 3.47 x 10-3 ± 3.54 x 10-3 %, P =
0.019) when compared to patients with HFrEF presenting a normal weight.
Lastly, when comparing subjects from the age-matched group, subjects with
dyslipidemia had significantly higher levels of CECs (7.74 x 10-3 ± 3.64 x 10-3 %
vs 5.34 x 10-3 ± 2.59 x 10-3 %, P = 0.042) compared to subjects without
dyslipidemia. In conclusion, the main result of this study is that the circulating
levels of EPCs and CECs were significantly decreased in patients with HFrEF in
comparison to subjects with cardiovascular risk factors. The current observations
regarding cardiovascular risk factors suggest that EPCs, CECs, and HSCs play
an important role in the detection and repair of vascular damage and endothelial
grupos (P = 0.590).
10-3 % vs 4.13 x 10-3 ± 3.55 x 10-3 %, P = 0.043) e CECs (6.27 x 10-3 ± 5.66 x 10-
3 % vs 3.47 x 10-3 ± 3.54 x 10-3 %, P = 0.019) significativamente superiores
As observações
e reparação do dano vascular e disfunção endotelial.Mestrado em Biomedicina Molecula
Redesign of a sustainable food bank supply chain
Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics Applied to Economics and Management.Food rescue and delivery organizations target concurrently the environmental objective of reduc- ing food waste, and the social objective of supporting underprivileged segments of the population. They secure surplus and about-to-waste food items from producers, manufacturers and retailers, and redistribute them through charitable agencies and parish councils to support the population in need of food assistance. Inspired by the case of the Portuguese Federation of Food Banks, the study ad- dresses the redesign of a food bank supply chain from a multi-dimensional outlook on sustainability. Considering an initial network of food banks, strategic decisions include the opening and closing of food banks, as well as the installation or expansion of storage and transport resources, while tactical decisions comprise the selection of served charities and respective assignment to the operational food banks. Moreover, product flows across the network are also to be determined. The supply chain is formulated as a three-layer network involving the donors, the food banks, and the charities, where multiple products flow in vertical and lateral directions. Based on an extensive literature review, and supported by an in-depth field research, the problem is formulated as a dynamic and capacitated tri-objective mixed-integer linear programming model, accounting for environmental indicators such as the volume of food waste and CO2 emissions, and social metrics assessing, among others, equity, inclusion, and proximity. The tri-objective problem is studied for regional and national supply chain instances, developed to depict real-life based cases. Non-dominated solutions are obtained for the regional instances appealing to the lexicographic ordering method. Relevant managerial insights are derived from the analysis of the lexicographic solutions. Three decomposition based heuristics de- veloped in this study proved to be effective in solving the national instances. Trade-offs between the economic, environmental, and social objectives are discussed, and properties of the mathematical programming model are proven.

In southwest Europe (mainland Portugal), the psammophilic ecosystems of coastal beaches and sand dunes are distributed by the Eurosiberian (EUR) and
Mediterranean (MED) biogeographic regions. In addition
to climatic and other environmental factors,
distinct plant communities are mainly influenced by
the instability of the coastal sands and the proximity
to the sea. Psammophilic gradients determine the
plant communities that occur from the first sectors
of the beach until the more interior dunes, being
expressed by specific floristic associations and different
rates of cover, namely by endemic taxa. The
analysis of 601 phytosociological relevés, conducted
between 1972 and 2010, from north (Minho) to
the south (Alentejo and Algarve), allowed to study
the dominant communities which occur along the
ecological gradient sea-interior, with the aim of
better understand general spatial geomorphologic
and phytogeographic trends of distribution. As for
the sea-interior gradient, no endemic flora appears
in the first vegetation strip (annual communities of
drift lines). Yet, some endemic species appear in the
embryonic shifting dunes of the back beach, with
endemic species’ coverage of 1.07% (EUR) and 1.7%
(MED). In the mobile dunes (white dunes) covers
by endemic flora are more significant: 6.95% (EUR)
against 4.14% (MED). Semi-stable dune (gray dune),
is composed by three associations (EUR, MED and
another of Transition (ART) which occurs between
the former two), who have the highest covers for
endemics: 38,89% (EUR) 43,37% (TRA) and 55,85%
(MED). Do not considering specific human induced
situations of degradation and erosion, a general
trend of gradual coverage growth by endemic
taxa, was signed from north to south, despite median
overall covers (total species) are higher in the
north. The endemic taxa have been separated into
endemic Portuguese (EP), Iberian (EI) and European
(EU) and its representativeness endorsed. The interest
in the use of phytosociology in this kind of study is discusse
