Using texts in the foreign language online classroom: the case of Universidade Aberta (Portugal)

At Universidade Aberta, Portugal’s unique distance learning university, undergraduate degrees include foreign language courses in German, Spanish, French and English (A1 – C1). These are taught entirely online through a learning platform (Moodle) which includes tools and resources teachers may use in their classes. In our experience of e-learning, we have been engaged in exploring how to effectively teach language skills online resorting to the latest technology at hand. Since the onset of Covid, however, we have been faced with an even greater challenge: to reach further in our standards of innovation and reference in the field of distance and online learning in Portugal, and that means working collaboratively to develop new and creative methodologies that will help students to acquire, not only the necessary language skills, but also communicative and collaborative competences in a world undergoing many transformations. In this paper we focus on the use of texts in language teaching online and on how, because of Covid, the teaching-learning process has had to further reinvent itself, even at a University already designed to teach at a distance. To illustrate our ideas, we refer to examples of texts taught in the four languages, on the tools and resources used to create learning materials, their application in the foreign language virtual classroom and on the importance of using texts in language teaching.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Contextos e condicionantes para o uso e reutilização de recursos educacionais abertos

Na globalidade do mundo em que vivemos, fala-se de sociedade da informação, de redes sociais e de partilha generalizada. Nas universidades, as solicitações para uso e reutilização de Recursos Educacionais pertencem a um mundo onde se fala cada vez mais de abertura. A abertura deve ser entendida como mais hipóteses para todos acederem a mais oportunidades de aprender e partilhar. Para aproveitar esta potencialidade, precisamos de apreender o contexto e as condicionantes em que se inscrevem os Recursos Educacionais Abertos (REAs), em particular no Ensino Superior Português. A presente investigação procurou estudar as perceções de um grupo de estudantes do Ensino Superior Português sobre os Recursos Educacionais Abertos (REAs) e as suas condicionantes no momento de transformar produções escritas por outros em REAs. A investigação incidiu sobre um grupo de estudantes de uma unidade curricular de um mestrado completamente online mais especificamente na unidade curricular de Psicologia da Comunicação Online do Mestrado em Pedagogia do E-learning da Universidade Aberta de Portugal. A metodologia escolhida para desenvolver o trabalho foi a Design-Based Research (DBR) porque se adequa às fases de design, implementação e análise que integram um processo em construção. Foram consideradas iterações da unidade curricular de enquadramento, o processo de aplicação da DBR contemplou dois grupos de investigadores nos quais cada um desenvolveu a sua pesquisa, situação que representa um desafio aceite e apresentou os seus benefícios. O objeto do nosso estudo situa-se na iteração da unidade curricular onde foram aplicados dois questionários e uma grelha da análise que permitiram recolher dados sobre a perceção dos estudantes ao trabalhar no contexto dos REAs. Os 5 Rs de Wiley foram pautando o ritmo do estudo, ficando convicta a investigadora da necessidade de mais aplicações e de mais estudos que permitam consolidar o objetivo de mais REAs para a educação aberta.Nowadays we speak about society of information, social networks and generalized share all over the world. In the universities, the solicitations for use and reuse of Educational Resources belong to an environment where opening is more and more referred. This opening must be interpreted as more chances for all the people to achieve more opportunities to learn and share. In order to take advantage of this possibility, we need to seize the context and the conditioning where the Opening Educational Resources are to be found especially in the Portuguese Higher Education. This investigation tried to study the perceptions of a group of students on OER and their environment to transfer written works by others in OER. It was taken from a group of students of a master’s course unit completely on line more specifically Psychology of Communication online – Master course in pedagogy of E-learning of the Universidade Aberta de Portugal. The methodology chosen to develop this investigation was the Design-Based Research (DBR) because it is suitable to the phases of design, implementation and analysis that integrate a process under construction. We considered iterations of the course unity of framework, the process of application of the DBR was composed by two groups of investigators each one developing his search which was a challenge accepted and with proved advantages. The object of our study focuses on the iteration where we used two inquiries and an analysis grid which permitted to make a data collection about the perception the students had working, on the OER’s context. The 5 Rs of Wiley were pacing the study. The investigator is certain that more applications and study are absolutely needed which will allow to consolidate the aim of more OER for open education

MAINTENANCE OF THE BUTTERFLYFISH Chaetodon striatus (PERCIFOMES: CHAETODONTIDAE) IN A RECIRCULATION SYSTEM

The hight extractivism of marine fish to supply the demand of the aquarium market has worried the researchers and, in this context,, the aquaculture consists of an alternative to the problem. The family Chaetodontidae represents one of the main families of ornamental marine fish and has not received enough attention on their cultivation research. Considering the absence of this information about the butterflyfish Chaetodon striatus, the present work had the objective of obtaining information about the species in captivity. The fishes were kept in tanks of 100, 200, 300 and 1,000 L, with 6 fishes in each tank, with 3 repetitions for each volume, totaling 72 individuals and were observed for 30 days, being offered living small invertebrates and frozen and fresh mussels for the feeding. Also, for the attempt of reproduction in captivity, two couples, collected directly from the sea, with the entry of only two adults in the trap at a time, were used. Each couple was acclimated in a 100 L tank and we observed their behaviors for 8 hours a day. There was no mortality in tanks of 300 and 1,000 L and, for feeding, small invertebrates and fresh mussels were well accepted. Some behaviors were observed, most of which were already described for chaetodontids. This is the first report of C. striatus in captivity and this contribution may provide subsidies for a future technologi­cal package

Particle size distribution and mineralogy of Brazilian Ferralsols: Significance for the structure and hydraulic properties.

The Cerrados Biome is one of the major regions of Brazil with 24% of the Brazilian territory (204.106 ha). It is mainly located in the center of Brazil and corresponds to the whole Central Plateau. About 49% of the soils are Ferralsols and approximately 79.106 ha of these soils are dedicated to agriculture. The main characteristics of Ferralsols are a poor horizonation, a weak development of the macrostructure, and a strong submillimetric granular microstructure

Melhor do que Fofy, só o novo Fofy: relançamento hipotético do biscoito

Propõe o relançamento hipotético do biscoito Fofy – sucesso no mercado brasileiro nos anos 90 – alicerçado em alguns pontos determinantes para a viabilidade deste relançamento. Inicialmente haverá uma abordagem mais ampla sobre a história dos biscoitos em geral, mostrando suas origens, evolução nos processos de produção e de comercialização, etc. Em seguida, o estudo se concentrará no mercado brasileiro de biscoitos, expondo suas características, potenciais, tendências e preferências dos consumidores. Também serão abordadas relações emocionais entre marca e consumidor, enfatizando conceitos como Lovemarks e Retrobranding, que estão em total sintonia com o case de Fofy e, por isso, dão maior sustentação teórica à proposta. Por fim, será traçado o Mix de Marketing para o relançamento do biscoito e serão apresentadas algumas sugestões de campanha

An acoustic and morphometric evaluation of the geographic distribution of Phyllomedusa burmeisteri (Anura: Phyllomedusidae), with comments on P. bahiana

An acoustic and morphometric evaluation of the geographic distribution of Phyllomedusa burmeisteri (Anura: Phyllomedusidae), with comments on P. bahiana. A recent study, based on phylogenetic and phylogeographic multilocus approaches, detected two evolutionary units (BUR and BUR-RJ) within the range of P. burmeisteri. BUR has a wide distribution, whereas BUR-RJ is restricted to a small area coincident with the Serra do Mar mountain range in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. We evaluate if acoustic and morphometric data support these two major clades within P. burmeisteri that were proposed using molecular evidence. We also provide for the frst time detailed morphometric data for adult males of P. burmeisteri (including topotypes) and the holotype of P. bahiana, and we revisit the comparative acoustic diagnosis between P. burmeisteri and P. bahiana. We were unable to distinguish BUR and BUR-RJ evolutionary units based on morphometric, acoustic or any other feature of external morphology or coloration. Given the high levels of similarity in morphometric and acoustic traits between P. burmeisteri and P. bahiana, these features appear not to be informative in the differentiation of the two sister species.Uma avaliação acústica e morfométrica da distribuição geográfca de Phyllomedusa burmeisteri (Anura: Phyllomedusidae), com comentários sobre P. bahiana. Um estudo recente, baseado em abordagens flogenéticas e flogeográfcas a partir de genes mitocondriais e nucleares, detectou duas unidades evolutivas (BUR e BUR-RJ) dentro da distribuição geográfca conhecida de P. burmeisteri. O estudo apontou que a linhagem BUR apresenta ampla distribuição, enquanto a BUR-RJ está restrita a uma pequena área coincidente com a Serra do Mar no estado do Rio de Janeiro. Neste estudo, nós avaliamos se os dados acústicos e morfométricos suportam esses dois clados de P. burmeisteri propostos com base em evidências moleculares. Também fornecemos dados morfométricos detalhados inéditos de machos adultos de P. burmeisteri (incluindo os topótipos), bem como do holótipo de P. bahiana. Além disso, revisitamos a diagnose acústica comparativa entre P. burmeisteri e P. bahiana proposta anteriormente na literatura. Não foi possível distinguir as unidades evolutivas (BUR e BUR-RJ) de P. burmeisteri com base em morfometria, bioacústica ou qualquer outro caráter da morfologia externa ou da coloração dos espécimes amostrados. Do mesmo modo, os caracteres morfométricos e acústicos parecem não ser informativos na diagnose comparativa entre P. burmeisteri e P. bahiana, uma vez que encontramos aqui altos níveis de similaridade entre essas duas espécies-irmãs

TRANSMÍDIA E REDES SOCIAIS: aspectos da inovação no telejornalismo

A partir de um olhar direcionado ao Jornal da Record News, esta pesquisa procura compreender os usos e apropriações da transmídia e das redes sociais digitais enquanto aspectos de inovação nos modos de fazer telejornalismo. O JR News se autointitula o primeiro telejornal transmídia do Brasil e usa as redes sociais para transmitir suas edições, chamadas e até reuniões de pauta, ao vivo, com a participação do público. Adotando-se entrevista semiestruturada e observação direta como procedimentos metodológicos, este artigo ampara-se em Charron e Bonville (2016), Recuero (2009), Alzamora e Tárcia (2012), Zago e Bastos (2013), Canavilhas (2013), Martins, Castro e Vinagre (2017), dentre outros, para discutir intersecções entre transmidialidade e redes sociais como alternativa para o jornalismo frente às mudanças na contemporaneidade.   PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Jornalismo Transmídia; Redes Sociais; Inovação no jornalismo, JR News.     ABSTRACT Based on a look at the Journal of Record News, this research seeks to understand the uses and appropriations of transmedia and the digital and social networks as aspects of innovation in ways of doing telejournalism. The JR News calls itself the first transmedia telejournal in Brazil and uses social networks to broadcast its issues, calls and even staff meetings, live, with audience participation.
