SLC54 Mitochondrial pyruvate carriers (version 2020.5) in the IUPHAR/BPS Guide to Pharmacology Database

    Get PDF
Pyruvate is oxidized to acetyl‐CoA by pyruvate dehydrogenase which is localized in the mitochondrial matrix. The mitochondrial pyruvate carrier (MPC) is a hetero-oligomer composed of SLC54 family members (MPC1 and MPC2). The MPC is expressed in the inner mitochondrial membrane and involved in the import of pyruvate into mitochondria [1, 5]. Ubiquitous disruption of either MPC1 or MPC2 expression results in embryonic lethality [7, 8]. Clinically relevant concentrations of the insulin sensitizers, thiazolidinediones, specifically inhibit the MPC [3]

The aim of the submitted paper is the naming of some (potential) connotations among Schopenhauer’s model of disinterestedness, draught in his aesthetical and ethical theory and predominantly Toltec teaching of Jaroslav Dušek. Schopenhauer’s concept of art or his explanation of purposeless and non-utilitarian production of the genius that corresponds with Dušek’s perception (but even practical realization) of so-called synchronicity that satisfies thematic background of the introductory part. I focus my attention on the common reasoning of the reflections of both thinkers in ethical questions in the second part. I put the context of Toltec compliment and persuasion “You are my other I” (“In Lak’ech”) explained by Dušek into the context with Schopenhauer’s arguments for the elimination of the egoism, thus, with the topic of identity of inner essence of all the living

Invasive alien species and planetary and global health policy

Comment article. The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Global Assessment, released in 2019, identified invasive alien species, those introduced by humans into regions beyond their natural distributions, as one of the five top direct drivers of biodiversity loss. Although many cases exist of positive adaptations to the introduction of invasive alien species, they are generally regarded as a severe threat to local ecosystems, wildlife, and human health and overall wellbeing. Once established, efforts to eradicate invasive alien species can raise both public health and ethical concerns because of the unintended effects that control measures can have on the environment and human livelihoods (eg, chemical control and biocontrol agents)

Muzikolog a estetik Jaroslav Volek dobově i aktuálně

    Get PDF
The article is partly based on the entry written for the web-based Český hudební slovník (Czech Music Dictionary www.musicologica.cz/slovnik) by the author together with Martina Stratilková. There are several connections mentioned in the introduction with Jiří Vysloužil, to whose jubilee volume this article was commissioned. The text then brings a brief professional biography of Jaroslav Volek (*1923, †1989). Volek graduated in composition at the Prague conservatoire and then, after the the war, also in musicology and aesthetics at the the Charles University in Prague. Following a brief employment in Bratislava he returned to the Prague university to lecture and later to become head of the Department of aesthetics. The change in political situation after the cleanup of the so-called Prague Spring and start of the "consolidation" in the beginning of 1970s seriously influenced both his life and career. He was blacklisted and deprived of both teaching and publication opportunities. Some sort of release came only slowly in the course of time: some of his texts were approved for publication, he participated in the musicological conference events (e.g. the Brno musicological colloquiums), in 1985 he lectured musical semiotics as a visiting professor at the university in Freiburg im Breisgau and made even a lecturing and study tour of universities of the USA. -- In the very beginning of his career of music scholar and critic specializing in the problems of music theory, especially harmony, his works concerning Béla Bartók were highly appreciated. Later he published several items - i.e. the treatise of fundamental importance Základy obecné teorie umění (Fundaments of the general theory of art, 1968). He compiled the following important studies in music theory into the publication Struktura a osobnosti hudby (Structure and personalities of music, 1988), which met with similar success as the new edition of his Kapitoly z dějin estetiky (Chapters from the history of aesthetics, 1985. Similarly as most his contemporaries in the Czech musicology and aesthetics, he passed through the influence of marxism, or let's say dialectical materialism, but also structuralism (the leading Czech aesthetician-structuralist Jan Mukařovský was among his teachers), and he upgraded his intellection with stimuli of the linguistics, cybernetics, theory of information and communication, but most of all of the semiotics. -- He himself became the most distinct personage of the Czech musical semiotics: he was, among other texts, author of the key chapter in the team publication Základy hudební sémiotiky (Fundaments of the musical semiotics, posth. 1992, see also the study in German: Musikstruktur als Zeichen und Musik als Zeichensystem, 1989). -- This study brings references to Volek's major scholarly outcome, as well as links to selected literature on Volek and a list of texts dedicated to him. Volek is considered one of key and most inspiring personages of the Czech musicology and aesthetics in the second half of the 20th century

Zaumna Šeherezada - o beogradskim i pariskim (avangardnim) balovima između dva rata

In expert circles, attention has been drawn to the '1002nd Night Ball' created by the protagonists of Yugoslav and Serbian avant-garde, in particular on its dance and musical segments, moreover, the ballet 'Le balai du valet' by Marko Ristić and Miloje Milojević, as well as the ensuing series of balls related to the Association of Friends of Art 'Cvijeta Zuzorić'. On the other hand, it is an (almost) completely unknown fact that Rade Drainac's original idea to throw a ball for the benefit of artists and writers that needed financial assistance because of difficult financial situation (later replaced with an initiative to raise funds to build an art pavilion 'Cvijeta Zuzorić') matched the idea of the Union of Russian artists in Paris to organize a ball with the aim of contributing to mutual aid. The ball in Paris, with the participation of the most prominent avant-garde artists, took place exactly one week after the Belgrade ball, which also suggests the possible connection / synchronization of these two artistic events. Having this in mind, I offer a brief analysis of the concept and scope of the aforementioned artistic events from the perspective of the intermedia and multimedia strategies. I demonstrate that the Belgrade spectacle was envisioned and performed far more ambitiously than the Parisian one, and the thoroughness of the interweaving of various arts ranks it among those works (including Parade by Cocteau, Picasso and Satie, Skating-Rink by Canudo, Leger, and Honegger, La creation du monde by Cendrars, Léger and Milhaud, with Russian and Swedish Ballet) that aimed to achieve a Gesamtkunstwerk, i.e. a total work of avant-garde art.Uporedna analiza dva avangardna bala - '1002. noć', Beograd, 16. 2. 1923, i 'Grand bal des artistes travesti transmental' Paris, 23 février 1923, razmatranje primenjenih umetničkih praksi, kao i šire tradicije (avangardnog) muzičko-scenskog spektakla u Beogradu i Parizu između dva rata
