Drilling deeper: understanding trade in Angola

    Get PDF
The present study analyzes Angola’s trading partners from 2005 to 2015 in order to understand the main drivers of Exports and Imports growth. Departing from a gravity model, foreign GDP growth and real exchange rate fluctuations were interpreted as demand and supply disturbances on Exports. While nominal and real exports both increase with demand expansions, they react differently to supply shocks. Imports are growing at the same rate as Angola’s economy while exchange rate fluctuations capture the wealth effect of Oil price in the economy

    Get PDF
In the ornamental stone industry, improving production processes is a constant challenge for managers looking for solutions that improve the competitiveness of the companies. The management of cutting and computerized cut command machine tools is one of the areas where this improvement in management processes can have a positive effect on the competitiveness and productivity of companies. With this purpose, a model based on business intelligence methodologies was developed to systematize and automate the management process. The proposed model consists of the following layers: acquisition, extract, transform and load, storage and access and analysis. The acquisition layer consists of the interface with data available in various formats. The extract, transform and load process aims to extract data from these repositories and load them into a data warehouse. While the access and analysis phase is based on the use of software tools with graphical user interface with advanced analysis reporting features. The technology infrastructure is supported by the open source Tibco Jaspersoft Community Edition software package, which provides tools for the practical implementation of the defined model. With this work, it is hoped to implement the defined business intelligence model thus giving answers to the problems identified by providing information for the decision-making that corresponds to the needs of the managers.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Integrating formal and informal learning through a FLOSS-based innovative approach

    Get PDF
It is said that due to the peculiar dynamics of FLOSS communities and their projects, effective participation in them is a privileged way to acquire the relevant skills and expertise in FLOSS development. Such is probably the reason for a number of higher education institutions to include in their curricula in Software Engineering some form of contact with the FLOSS reality. This paper explores such a perspective through an on-going case study on university students collaboration in FLOSS projects. The aim of this research is to 1) identify what should be learnt about software development through regular participation in a FLOSS project/community, and 2) assess the didactic potential of this kind of non-standard learning experiences. To this aim we resorted to a participatory research action approach and qualitative methods, namely case studies combining direct observation and interviews. This work is supported by Macao Science and Technology Development Fund (MSTDF), File No. 019 / 2011 / A1, as well as the ERDF - European Regional Development Fund through the COMPETE Programme (operational programme for competitiveness), by National Funds through FCT - the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, within project FCOMP-01-0124-FEDER-010047

    Get PDF
Wine companies operate in a very competitive environment in which they must provide better-customised services and products to survive and gain advantage. The high customer turnover rate is a problem for these companies. This work aims to provide wine companies with new knowledge about customers that help to retain the existing ones. The study applies a collected dataset from a transaction database in a medium-sized ortuguese wine company to determinate: (1) customer lifetime value; (2) cluster customer value as output (customer loyalty). The measurement of the customer lifetime value (CLV) was analysed using the Pareto/NBD model and gamma-gamma model. Clustering techniques are employed to segment customers according to Recency, Frequency, and Monetary (RFM) values. Study findings show that exists three clusters with different interest to the marketing strategies, identifying the high-value customers, to target using marketing to increase their lifetime value effectively. The implications for the marketing strategy decisions is that using techniques based on the RFM model can make the most from data of customers and transactions databases and thus create sustainable advantages.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Background: Despite declining trends maternal mortality remains an important public health issue in Mozambique. The delays to reach an appropriate health facility and receive care faced by woman with pregnancy related complications play an important role in the occurrence of these deaths. This study aims to examine the contribution of the delays in relation to the causes of maternal death in facilities in Mozambique. Methods: Secondary analysis was performed on data from a national assessment on maternal and neonatal health that included in-depth maternal death reviews, using patient files and facility records with the most comprehensive information available. Statistical models were used to assess the association between delay to reach the health facility that provides emergency obstetric care (delay type II) and delay in receiving appropriate care once reaching the health facility providing emergency obstetric care (delay type III) and the cause of maternal death within the health facility. Results: Data were available for 712 of 2,198 maternal deaths. Delay type II was observed in 40.4% of maternal deaths and delay type III in 14.2%.and 13.9% had both delays. Women who died of a direct obstetric complication were more likely to have experienced a delay type III than women who died due to indirect causes. Women who experienced delay type II were less likely to have also delay type III and vice versa. Conclusions: The delays in reaching and receiving appropriate facility-based care for women facing pregnancy related complications in Mozambique contribute significantly to maternal mortality. Securing referral linkages and health facility readiness for rapid and correct patient management are needed to reduce the impact of these delays within the health system

Professores/as de coragem: a escola nas disputas sobre o governo dos corpos

    Get PDF
