    The nexus between climate change, ecosystem services and human health: Towards a conceptual framework

    This paper addresses the impact that changes in natural ecosystems can have on health and wellbeing focusing on the potential co-benefits that green spaces could provide when introduced as climate change adaptation measures. Ignoring such benefits could lead to sub-optimal planning and decision-making. A conceptual framework, building on the ecosystem-enriched Driver, Pressure, State, Exposure, Effect, Action model (eDPSEEA), is presented to aid in clarifying the relational structure between green spaces and human health, taking climate change as the key driver. The study has the double intention of (i) summarising the literature with a special emphasis on the ecosystem and health perspectives, as well as the main theories behind these impacts, and (ii) modelling these findings into a framework that allows for multidisciplinary approaches to the underlying relations between human health and green spaces. The paper shows that while the literature based on the ecosystem perspective presents a well-documented association between climate, health and green spaces, the literature using a health-based perspective presents mixed evidence in some cases. The role of contextual factors and the exposure mechanism are rarely addressed.     Satisfacción del estudiante universitario con la tutoría. Diseño y validación de un instrumento de medida

    La tutoría universitaria se considera un factor de calidad y una exigencia del EEES. Este trabajo presenta el diseño y validación de una escala de satisfacción con la tutoría y el grado de satisfacción en una muestra de estudiantes (n=976), en un estudio descriptivo y transversal. El análisis factorial es satisfactorio, la escala queda compuesta por 22 ítems y dos sub-escalas que explican el 57.87% de la varianza. La fi abilidad del instrumento (α=.973) y de las sub-escalas (α=.967 y α=.944) es alta. Los resultados muestran una mayor satisfacción con el tutor que con la organización y contenidos de la tutoría. University tutoring is considered as a quality factor and a requirement of the EHEA. Thus this paper presents the construction and validating process of a scale of satisfaction with it and the level of satisfaction in a sample of students (n=976) in a cross and descriptive study. Factor analysis is satisfying, scale is composed of a total of 22 items and two sub-scales explaining 57.87% of the variance. Instrument reliability level (α=.973) and both sub-scales (α=.967 y α=.944) are considered high. Results show greater satisfaction with the tutor than with the organization and content of mentoring.

    A Technological Scenario for a Healthier, More Equitable and Sustainable Europe in 2040: Citizen Perceptions and Policy Implications

Available from MDPI via the DOI in this record.This article aims at exploring, understanding and comparing European citizens’ insights and perceptions towards “My life between realities”, a positive future scenario which depicts a narrative of reaching healthier, more equitable and sustainable societies by 2040 with the support of technology and technological solutions. It responds to the need for gathering and incorporating more citizen insights into future policy developments and strategic actions to tackle the global challenge of unsustainable development. Citizens of five European countries—the Czech Republic, Germany, North Macedonia, Spain and the United Kingdom—have been consulted through focus groups. The exercise has uncovered citizens’ preferences and attitudes towards four main lifestyle areas; namely, green spaces, energy efficient housing, active mobility and (food) consumption. The technological attributes of the scenario led to citizens expressing diametrically opposed and critical perceptions and attitudes. Given the prospects of technology in driving sustainable development, based on these insights, policy recommendations for the better integration and acceptance of technological advances by the public are discussed herein.European Commissio

    Exposure to green areas: modelling health benefits in a context of study heterogeneity

Available on open access from Elsevier via the DOI in this record Although the beneficial health effects of green areas are gaining recognition, epidemiological studies show mixed results with significance varying considerably by study and context, indicating that there is no unique and clear evidence. This relationship is influenced by multiple factors and characterised by high complexity not previously been incorporated in one single analysis. This study proposes a new application of the Heckman selection model to find evidence of key patterns emerging throughout the literature and identify main determinants affecting the relationship. The model aggregates outcomes of different studies and allows an assessment of both significant and non-significant results from the literature in order to correct for unobserved selection bias. Close attention is paid to the relevance of the background, particularly socioeconomic context. The results show significant health benefits associated with increased exposure to green areas, where higher risk reductions are observed for old and adult age groups, as well as in poorer countries, taking into account the correction for the publication bias. This last issue points towards a redistributive impact of green areas in terms of health and the importance of co-benefits arising from Ecosystem-based Adaptation, especially in poorer neighbourhoods, translating in health care savings and reduced productivity loss.European Commissio

    Urban green space: creating a triple win for environmental sustainability, health, and health equity through behavior change

    Urbanization, costs of green space maintenance, and diminishing connection between people and nature all exert pressures on urban green space. This is regrettable as green space has the potential to create wins for environmental sustainability, health, and health equity. This paper explores this potential triple win and investigates how to increase the use of urban green space through behavior change. A narrative literature review was conducted and was supplemented with literature suggested by experts. Results show that creating well-designed green spaces and stimulating people to use them can indeed deliver this triple win. Providing accessible, attractive, well-maintained green space with room for socialization, and where people feel safe, may increase the opportunity and motivation of people to use it more often. Informing and educating people and organizing activities may increase capability (and motivation) to use green space. Since the use of green space depends on life stage, lifestyle factors and individual values, it is important to involve potential users in its design. We recommend a specific focus on those groups who may benefit most from the use of green space. More evaluation is needed to inform effective green space interventions and to assess related economic, social, and environmental benefits.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Disappearing in the night: an overview on trade and legislation of night monkeys in South and Central America

    The international trade in night monkeys (Aotus spp.), found throughout Central and South America, has been regulated by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) since 1975. We present a quantitative analysis of this trade from all 9 range countries, over 4 decades, and compare domestic legislation to CITES regulations. Night monkeys were exported from 8 of the 9 habitat countries, totalling 5,968 live individuals and 7,098 specimens, with trade of live individuals declining over time. In terms of species, the most commonly traded was Aotus nancymaae (present in Brazil, Colombia, Peru) followed by A. vociferans (Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru) and A. zonalis (Colombia, Panama). There was no significant correlation between levels of trade and species' geographic range size or the number of countries in which a species occurs. Five countries have legislation that meets CITES requirements for implementation, whereas the other 4 countries' legislation showed deficiencies. Research conducted in Colombia, Peru, and Brazil suggests significant cross-border trade not captured in official international trade registers. Although international trade has diminished, current trends suggest that populations of rarer species may be under unsustainable pressure. Further research is needed to quantify real trade numbers occurring between habitat countries

    Calibration and first results of relative humidity sensor MEDA HS onboard M2020 rover

    MEDA HS is the relative humidity sensor on the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover provided by theFinnish Meteorological Institute (FMI). The sensor is a part of Mars Environmental DynamicAnalyzer (MEDA), a suite of environmental sensors provided by Centro de Astrobiología in Madrid,Spain. MEDA HS, along with METEO-H in ExoMars 2022 surface platform, is a successor of REMS-Hon board Curiosity.Calibration of relative humidity (RH) instruments for Mars missions is challenging due to the rangeof RH (from 0 to close to 100%) and temperature conditions (from about -90 ºC to + 22 ºC) thatneed to be simulated in the lab. Thermal gradients in different parts of the system need to be wellknown and controlled to ensure reliable reference RH readings. For MEDA HS the calibration testshave been performed for different models of MEDA HS in three Martian humidity simulatorlaboratories: FMI laboratory, Michigan Mars Environmental Chamber (MMEC) and DLR PASLAB(Planetary Analog Simulation Laboratory). MEDA HS flight model was tested at FMI together with flight spare and ground reference models inlow pressure dry CO2 gas from +22ºC to -70ºC and in saturation conditions from -40ºC down to-70ºC. Further, the MEDA HS flight model final calibration is complemented by calibration datatransferred from an identical ground reference model which has gone through rigorous testingalso after the flight model delivery. During the test campaign at DLR PASLAB that started inAutumn 2020, MEDA HS has been calibrated over the full relative humidity scale between -70 to-40ºC in CO2 in the pressure ranges from 5.5 to 9.5 hPa, representative of Martian surfaceatmospheric pressure. The results can be extrapolated to higher and lower temperatures.In this presentation the final flight calibration and performance of the MEDA HS will be presentedtogether with first results expected from the surface of Mars by the Perseverance rover

    IN VIVO AND IN VITRO ANTILEISHMANIAL EFFECTS OF METHANOLIC EXTRACT FROM BARK OF BURSERA APTERA

    Background: Cutaneous leishmaniasis lacks effective and well-tolerated treatments. The current therapies mainly rely on antimonial drugs that are inadequate because of their poor efficacy. Traditional medicine offers a complementary alternative for the treatment of various diseases. Additionally, several plants have shown success as anti-leishmanial agents. Therefore, we sought to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo activity of MEBA against Leishmania mexicana. Materials and Methods: Methanolic extract of B. aptera was obtained by macetration, after we determined in vitro antileishmanial activity of MEBA by MTT assay and the induced apoptosis in promastigotes by flow cytometry. To analyze the in vivo anti-leishmanial activity, we used infected mice that were treated and not treated with MEBA and we determined the levels of cytokines using ELISA. The phytochemical properties were determined by CG-MS and DPPH assay. Results: We determined of LC50 of 0.408 mg/mL of MEBA for in vitro anti-leishmanial activity. MEBA induced apoptosis in promastigotes (15.3% ± 0.86). Treated mice exhibited smaller lesions and contained significantly fewer parasites than did untreated mice; in addition, we found that IFN-γ and TNF-α increased in the sera of MEBA-treated mice. GC-MS analysis showed that podophyllotoxin was the most abundant compound. Evaluation of the activity by DPPH assay demonstrated an SC50 of 11.72 μg/mL. Conclusion: Based on the above data, it was concluded that MEBA is a good candidate in the search for new antileishmanial agents
