    Probing SUSY effects in KS0→μ+μ−K_S^0\rightarrow\mu^+\mu^-

We explore supersymmetric contributions to the decay KS0→μ+μ−K_S^0\rightarrow\mu^+\mu^-, in light of current experimental data. The Standard Model (SM) predicts B(KS0→μ+μ−)≈5×10−12\mathcal{B}(K_S^0\rightarrow\mu^+\mu^-)\approx5\times 10^{-12}. We find that contributions arising from flavour violating Higgs penguins can enhance the branching fraction up to ≈35×10−12\approx 35\times 10^{-12} within different scenarios of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), as well as suppress it down to ≈0.78×10−12\approx 0.78\times 10^{-12}. Regions with fine-tuned parameters can bring the branching fraction up to the current experimental upper bound, 8×10−108\times 10^{-10}. The mass degeneracy of the heavy Higgs bosons in MSSM induces correlations between B(KS0→μ+μ−)\mathcal{B}(K_S^0\rightarrow\mu^+\mu^-) and B(KL0→μ+μ−)\mathcal{B}(K_L^0\rightarrow\mu^+\mu^-). Predictions for the CPCP asymmetry in K0→μ+μ−K^0\rightarrow\mu^+\mu^- decays in the context of MSSM are also given, and can be up to eight times bigger than in the SM.Comment: 36 pages, 31 fig

    Low-Dimensional Magnetic Systems

The interest in the nanoscale properties of low-dimensional magnetic systems has grown exponentially during the last decades and has attracted the attention of both experimentalists and theorists. The state of the art of these investigations has indeed allowed to give valuable insights into the underlying physics of complex magnetization dynamics driven by magnetic fields, electric currents and thermal effects. At the same time, such studies have found, in relatively short times, several applications at industrial level in the field of spintronics and magnonics as magnetic memories, microwave oscillators, modulators, sensors, logic gates, diodes and transistors. The goal of this special issue is to offer a variety of recent developments on this topic by gathering contributions arising from several specialists in the field of nanomagnetism. The strength of this issue lies indeed on its "variety": the properties of these systems are, in fact, investigated from the viewpoint of physicists, engineers and mathematicians. Also, the issue encloses studies carried out at both mesoscopic and atomic scales, as well as results of both theoretical approaches (analytical, numerical and, in some cases, even "hybrid") and experimental observations. The covered topics range from the micromagnetic modeling of domain wall motion, dynamics of vortex structures, phase-locking phenomena in spintronic oscillators, experimental techniques for realizing heterostructures based on magnon-induced spin transfer torque, band structure and exchange field in the Landau-Lifshitz equation for magnonic crystals, gap and gapless structures in fractional quantum Hall effect, semiclassical description of anisotropic magnets and classical critical behaviour of Heisenberg ferromagnets. More specifically, within the subject dealing with domain walls, for example, the structure of complex cross-tie/vortex wall structures in soft films has been studied in detail by using micromagnetic simulations whereas the influence of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling on the current-induced dynamics has been investigated analytically. Regarding the exchange interaction governing the dynamics in magnonic crystals, a full analytical calculation of the exchange field acting on spin-wave dynamics from themicroscopic Heisenbergmodel has been performed. Attention has been also devoted to the study of thermodynamics in the case of classical planar ferromagnets close to the zero-temperature critical point. Two reviews are also included in this special issue. The first one deals with two hybrid micromagnetic tools, based on Hamiltonian and Lagrangian approaches, to model the spin-dynamics in laterally confined magnetic systems. The second one is mostly devoted to the micromagnetic analysis of static and dynamic properties of magnetic domain walls in materials exhibiting perpendicular anisotropy

Clinical psychology, as an application of psychological science, must undergo a constant process of revision and development of its empirical foundations. The current study explores the scientific status of clinical psychology in the Dominican Republic, with a focus on three main elements: use of evidence-based practices, preference for clinical judgment over actuarial judgments, and knowledge of research methods and statistics. Additionally, we explore professional development practices, and other important elements for the responsible application of science. Our results indicate multiple weaknesses in clinical practice, including an excessive use of techniques with poor validity, strong endorsement of clinical judgments, general apathy towards active involvement in research, and lack of knowledge of basic methodological and statistical concepts. We discuss factors potentially related to these weaknesses, and propose possible steps to take in order to strengthen clinical psychology in the Dominican Republic

The study of small reservoirs with low suspended sediment concentration (CSS) is still a challenge for remote sensing. In this work we estimate CSS from the optical properties of water and orbital imagery. Campaigns were carried out at selected dates according to the calendar of sensor passages, rainfall seasonality and hydrograph of the reservoir for the collection of surface water samples and field spectroradiometry. The calibration between CSS and spectral behavior generated CSS estimation models from MODIS and Landsat 8 data, allowing investigation of their temporal and spatial behavior. The MODIS model generated a time series of CSS from 2000 to 2017, presenting R2 = 0.8105 and RMSE% = 39.91%. The Landsat 8 model allowed the spatial analysis of CSS, with R2 = 0.8352 and RMSE% = 15.12%. The combination of the proposed models allowed the temporal and spatial analysis of the CSS and its relationships with the rainfall regime and the quota variation of the Descoberto reservoir (DF). The results showed that the use of orbital data complements the CSS information obtained by the traditional methods of collecting and analyzing water quality in low CSS reservoirs

Human serum albumin (HSA) is the most abundant circulating protein in the body and presents an extensive range of biological functions. As such, it is prone to undergo post-translational modifications (PTMs). The non-enzymatic early glycation of HSA, one of the several PTMs undergone by HSA, arises from the addition of reducing sugars to amine group residues, thus modifying the structure of HSA. These changes may affect HSA functions impairing its biological activity, finally leading to cell damage. The aim of this study was to quantitate glycated-HSA (GA) levels in the plasma of heart failure (HF) patients and to evaluate the biological effects of GA on HL-1 cardiomyocytes. Plasma GA content from HF patients and healthy subjects was measured by direct infusion electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Results pointed out a significant increase of GA in HF patients with respect to the control group (p < 0.05). Additionally, after stimulation with GA, proteomic analysis of HL-1 secreted proteins showed the modulation of several proteins involved, among other processes, in the response to stress. Further, stimulated cells showed a rapid increase in ROS generation, higher mRNA levels of the inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and higher levels of the oxidative 4-HNE-protein adducts and carbonylated proteins. Our findings show that plasma GA is increased in HF patients. Further, GA exerts pro-inflammatory and pro-oxidant effects on cardiomyocytes, which suggest a causal role in the etiopathogenesis of HF

Enhanced allergic sensitisation related to parental smoking

    Get PDF
The objective of this study was to assess the role of parental smoking in changes, after a four year interval (1983-7), in the prevalence and severity of the atopic state in 166 pre-adolescent children. Allergy skin prick tests were related to parental smoking habits and their changes during this same interval. The total number of cigarettes smoked by parents decreased in 56 families while it increased in only 16. Boys had significantly more persistently positive skin tests and changed more frequently from negative to positive. The skin test index did not show significant changes in girls. This index did not change in children of persistent non-smokers or those starting to smoke during this period, while it increased among sons of those that quit smoking and of persistent smokers. This was not only due to those boys who became skin test positive during follow up. When analysis was restricted to 14 boys who had been skin test positive in 1983 and whose parents were persistent smokers, the index increased in eight, remained unchanged in four, and decreased in only two. This report supports the hypothesis that parental smoking is a factor that, together with specific allergenic exposure, may enhance allergic sensitisation in children

Intracellular Pharmacodynamic Modeling Is Predictive of the Clinical Activity of Fluoroquinolones against Tuberculosis

Clinical studies of new antitubercular drugs are costly and time-consuming. Owing to the extensive tuberculosis (TB) treatment periods, the ability to identify drug candidates based on their predicted clinical efficacy is vital to accelerate the pipeline of new therapies. Recent failures of preclinical models in predicting the activity of fluoroquinolones underline the importance of developing new and more robust predictive tools that will optimize the design of future trials. Here, we used high-content imaging screening and pharmacodynamic intracellular (PDi) modeling to identify and prioritize fluoroquinolones for TB treatment. In a set of studies designed to validate this approach, we show moxifloxacin to be the most effective fluoroquinolone, and PDi modeling-based Monte Carlo simulations accurately predict negative culture conversion (sputum sterilization) rates compared to eight independent clinical trials. In addition, PDi-based simulations were used to predict the risk of relapse. Our analyses show that the duration of treatment following culture conversion can be used to predict the relapse rate. These data further support that PDi-based modeling offers a much-needed decision-making tool for the TB drug development pipeline
