The highest degree awarded by the community college has generally been the associate in arts or the associate in science degree (Cohen & Brawer, 2008); however, an increasing number of community colleges have expanded their missions to award baccalaureate degrees (Levin, 2004; Russell, 2010; Walker, 2005). Although some community colleges have adopted the four-year degree function while maintaining their community college mission, others have become full baccalaureate degree granting colleges. In fact, this trend contributed to a 70% increase in the number of baccalaureate colleges from 1995-2006 (Longanecker, 2008). Nevertheless, little research exists on what this process looks like (Longanecker, 2008; Toma, 2012). As such, the purpose of this study was to explore Ardent\u27s transition from a community college into a four-year comprehensive college. I was particularly interested in learning about what the transition entailed and possible implications for various stakeholders. Although for accreditation purposes some community colleges offering baccalaureates have been required to abdicate \u27community\u27 from their name and become categorized as four-year colleges (Floyd, 2006), Ardent sought such categorization and had an explicit organizational vision to become a university. In order to explore what the transition from a community college into a four-year comprehensive college looks like, I employed case study methods as they allowed for an in-depth examination and understanding of such process (Stake, 1995, 2000). More specifically, this research is an example of an intrinsic case study (Stake, 1995, 2000) at Ardent College, a former community college in the southwestern United States. As I believed this transition could be best understood from the perspective of those experiencing and enacting this transition, I sought the perspectives of faculty, staff, and administrators at the College. Additionally, I collected organizational documents, that could help me further understand what the transition entailed (Stake, 2000). Participant observations on campus and college events also contributed to my understanding of Ardent\u27s transition. The main finding of this study was that Ardent\u27s transition entailed an organizational cultural shift in efforts to gain legitimacy. Specifically, Ardent\u27s cultural shift was enabled by tightening operations and formalizing operations. Furthermore, although access was pronounced as the primary reason for Ardent\u27s transition into a four-year college, findings indicate that decisions made by individuals primarily charged with steering Ardent\u27s transition, in fact, undercut access

Methodology for Abrasive Wear Evaluation in Elevator Stage Centrifugal Pump Impellers

The abrasion resistance of the impellers depends on the characteristics of the materials used in their manufacture. In this work, a methodology is proposed for the evaluation of the abrasive wear of the plates of the centrifugal pump impellers, used in the gross water infrastructure station (GWIS) of sedimentary rivers, due to the sediment load variation and the river fluviometric dimension. In order to determine the wear mode and the relationship of the material-specific wear coefficient (K), due to the sediment concentration, a rotating ball abrasometer test was performed on SAE 8620, gray cast iron (GCI), and nodular cast iron (NCI), used in the manufacture of impellers. As an abrasive suspension, the concentrations of 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 g L−1 of sediment were used in distilled water. The wear volume as a function of the relative velocity of the mixture in relation to the impeller blades was estimated mathematically. The results show that: i) The abrasive capacity of the sediments in different concentrations; ii) SAE 8620 steel was more resistant to abrasive wear; and iii) the rotational control of the pump as a function of sediment concentration and river level showed the possibility of reducing wear by 30%

Rubert D, Hoshino EA, Dias Vieira Braga M, Stoye J, Martinez FHV. Computing the family-free DCJ similarity. BMC Bioinformatics. 2018;19(Suppl. 6): 152.Background The genomic similarity is a large-scale measure for comparing two given genomes. In this work we study the (NP-hard) problem of computing the genomic similarity under the DCJ model in a setting that does not assume that the genes of the compared genomes are grouped into gene families. This problem is called family-free DCJ similarity. Results We propose an exact ILP algorithm to solve the family-free DCJ similarity problem, then we show its APX-hardness and present four combinatorial heuristics with computational experiments comparing their results to the ILP. Conclusions We show that the family-free DCJ similarity can be computed in reasonable time, although for larger genomes it is necessary to resort to heuristics. This provides a basis for further studies on the applicability and model refinement of family-free whole genome similarity measures

Displacement has changed the dynamics and structure of Colombian Communities. This paper take into account the traumatic evidence shown in the different stories throughout the Deepening Psychosocial Accompaniment in Violence Scenario course. The protagonist of these stories share their experiences and personal insight characterized by resilience and empowerment viewed in the process of building their own identity by leaving behind painful events. This process has enable a transformation of their lives and their family´s as well, motivated by the desire and interest of the future, finding new alternatives for change, developing a life project for their own benefit and also for their families and communities. Camilo story was chosen for this document because it shows a harsh past reality from we cannot be indifferent. Displacement has been one of the biggest consequences of the armed conflict in our country that have led to thousands of families to be strip away of their belongings and migrate to other places to safeguard their lives; then conflict begin for these families that have been stigmatized for being afro-Colombian. These has been the case for Camilo as a result of not giving him the opportunity to have stability; traumatic psychosocial events start to blossom and have an impact on his personal life, family, and community making them change their lifestyles and customs due to the violation of their rights Nine strategic, circular, and reflective questions were formulated seeking to strengthen the accompaniment skills. Moving forward in the activity the groups read the Cacarica case. This is the situation of a stigmatized community that have been oppressed up to the risk of death due to the armed conflict, leaving them with a dark and sad outlook. Feelings of hopelessness and depression are a reflection of the community’s psychosocial shock, which have lead them to abandon their towns, change their identity, forget their beliefs, and not want to return to their lands, causing loss of their culture, identity, life expectancy and life projectio

In this activity of scenarios and approach to contexts from narrative approaches, four very important steps are taken into account, to address psychosocial contexts, whose objective is to ensure that victims of violence manage to overcome those tragic episodes that they had to face, in the different cases presented in this last stage, the above is in order to acquire knowledge that will serve us as professionals in psychology to be able to provide a good development and care of these problems with excellent human and professional quality. As a first case, the case of Mrs. Ana Ligia 4 is analyzed, as a victim of a war that allows us to know in what context the episodes, psychosocial problems of violence and forced displacement that she had to face took place, which affect the interrelationships of being human in this context. The second step allows us to pose a series of questions that allow us to strategically explore the context in which the case was developed, allowing us to observe in detail the possible actions that may restore the problem of the case. The third step addressed the case of “Peñas Coloradas”, where the psychosocial approach is established in detail from the point of view of the experience of the residents of the community of peñas coloradas that are aimed at preserving the integrity and physical and emotional stability of the inhabitants

Randomized Clinical Trials of obesity treatments in Mexican population. Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background: Mexicans and Mexican Americans share similar culture, genetic background, and predisposition for obesity and diabetes. Randomized clinical trials (RCT) assessing obesity treatments (ObT) are reliable to assess efficacy. To date, there is no systematic review to investigate ObT tested by RCT in Mexican adults. Methods: We conducted systematic searches in Pubmed, Scopus, and Web of Science to retrieve ObT RCT from 1990 to 2019. The ObT included alternative medicine, pharmacological, nutritional, behavioral, and surgical interventions. The analyzed RCT were at least three months of duration, and reported: BMI, weight, waist circumference, triglycerides, glucose and blood pressure. Results: We found 634 entries; after removal of duplicates and exclusions based on eligibility criteria, we analyzed 43 and 2 multinational-collaborative studies. Most of the national studies had small sample sizes, and did not have replications from other studies. The nutrition/behavioral interventions were difficult to blind, and most studies had medium to high risk of bias. Random effects meta-analysis of nutritional/behavioral interventions and medications showed effects on BMI, waist circumference, and blood pressure. Simple measures like plain water instead of sweet beverages decreased triglycerides and systolic blood pressure. Participants with obesity and hypertension had beneficial effects with antioxidants, and the treatment with insulin increased weight in those with T2D. Conclusions: The RCT’s in Mexico reported effects on metabolic components despite small sample sizes and lack of replication. In the future we should analyze ObT in population living on the U.S.-Mexico border; therefore, bi-national collaboration is desirable to disentangle cultural effects on ObT response
