    Optical fibre digital pulse-position-modulation assuming a Gaussian received pulse shape

    The abundance in bandwidth available in the best monomode fibres may be exchanged for improved receiver sensitivity by employing digital PPM. The paper presents a performance and optimisation analysis for a digital PPM coding scheme operating over a fibre channel employing a PIN-BJT receiver and assuming a Gaussian received pulse shape. The authors present original results for a 50 Mbit/s, 1.3 μm wavelength digital PPM system and conclude that, provided the fibre bandwidth is several times that of the data rate, digital PPM can outperform commercially available PIN-BJT binary PCM system

    Ontogenetic shift in diet of a large elapid snake is facilitated by allometric change in skull morphology

    As snakes are limbless, gape-limited predators, their skull is the main feeding structure involved in prey handling, manipulation and feeding. Ontogenetic changes in prey type and size are likely to be associated with distinct morphological changes in the skull during growth. We investigated ontogenetic variation in diet from stomach contents of 161 Dugite specimens (Pseudonaja affinis, Elapidae) representing the full range of body size for the species, and skull morphology of 46 specimens (range 0.25–1.64 m snout-vent-length; SVL). We hypothesised that changes in prey type throughout postnatal ontogeny would coincide with distinct changes in skull shape. Dugites demonstrate a distinct size-related shift in diet: the smallest individuals ate autotomised reptile tails and reptiles, medium-sized individuals predominantly ate mammals, and the largest individuals had the most diverse diet, including large reptiles. Morphometric analysis revealed that ~40% of the variation in skull shape was associated with body size (SVL). Through ontogeny, skulls changed from a smooth, bulbous cranium with relatively small trophic bones (upper and lower jaws and their attachments), to more rugose bones (as a likely reflection of muscle attachment) and relatively longer trophic bones that would extend gape. Individual shape variation in trophic bone dimensions was greater in larger adults and this likely reflects natural plasticity of individuals feeding on different prey sizes/types. Rather than a distinct morphological shift with diet, the ontogenetic changes were gradual, but positive allometry of individual trophic bones resulted in disproportionate growth of the skull, reflected in increased gape size and mobility of jaw bones in adults to aid the ingestion of larger prey and improve manipulation and processing ability.     The results of the recent experiments on the reaction π−p→π0π0n\pi^-p\to\pi^0\pi^0n performed at KEK, BNL, IHEP, and CERN are analyzed in detail. For the I=0 ππ\pi\pi S wave phase shift δ00\delta^0_0 and inelasticity η00\eta^0_0 a new set of data is obtained. Difficulties emerging when using the physical solutions for the π0π0\pi^0\pi^0 S and D wave amplitudes extracted with the partial wave analyses are discussed. Attention is drawn to the fact that, for the π0π0\pi^0\pi^0 invariant mass, m, above 1 GeV, the other solutions, in principle, are found to be more preferred. For clarifying the situation and further studying the f0(980)f_0(980) resonance thorough experimental investigations of the reaction π−p→π0π0n\pi^-p\to\pi^0\pi^0n in the m region near the KKˉK\bar K threshold are required.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure

    Trophic Dynamics of the Boreal Forests of the Kluane Region

    The trophic dynamics of the Yukon boreal forest have been under investigation at the Kluane Lake Research Station since 1973. We monitored and conducted experiments on the major species in this ecosystem, except the large mammals (for logistic reasons). The central problem has been to determine the causes of the 9 – 10 year cycle of snowshoe hares, and to achieve this we carried out several large-scale experiments manipulating food supplies, predator pressure, and soil nutrient availability to test hypotheses that food, predation, or habitat quality regulate populations. The hare cycle is driven top-down by predators, and most hares die because they are killed by predators. Predators also cause stress in female hares, and the stress response seems to be responsible for the loss of reproductive potential in the decline and low phases of the hare cycle. Many of the specialist predators and some herbivores in this ecosystem fluctuate with the hare cycle. Arctic ground squirrels do, but red squirrels do not, being linked closely to white spruce seed masting years. Small rodents fluctuate in numbers in two patterns. Red-backed voles and four species of Microtus voles have a 3 – 4 year cycle that seems to be driven by food supplies and social behaviour. Deer mice, in contrast, have fluctuated dramatically in the 38 years we have monitored them, but not cyclically. White spruce seed production varies with temperature and rainfall, but was not affected by adding nutrients in fertilizer. Global warming and reduced hare browsing in the last 20 years have helped to increase the abundance of shrubs in these forests. It will be challenging to predict how this system will change as climatic warming proceeds, because even closely related species in the same trophic level respond differently to perturbations. We recommend continued monitoring of the major species in these boreal forests.La dynamique trophique de la forêt boréale du Yukon fait l’objet d’une étude à la station de recherche du lac Kluane depuis 1973. Nous avons fait des expériences et surveillé les espèces importantes de cet écosystème, sauf en ce qui a trait aux principaux mammifères (pour des raisons de logistique). Le problème central a consisté à déterminer les causes du cycle de 9 à 10 ans du lièvre d’Amérique. Pour ce faire, nous avons effectué plusieurs expériences à grande échelle dans le cadre desquelles nous avons manipulé les disponibilités alimentaires, la pression exercée par les prédateurs et la disponibilité en nutriments dans le sol afin de mettre à l’épreuve les hypothèses selon lesquelles la nourriture, la prédation ou la qualité de l’habitat régularisent les populations. Le cycle du lièvre est dicté par les prédateurs de haut en bas, et la plupart des lièvres meurent parce qu’ils sont tués par les prédateurs. Par ailleurs, les prédateurs sont une source de stress chez les lièvres femelles, et la réaction au stress semble responsable de la perte de capacité de reproduction dans la phase du déclin et la phase basse du cycle du lièvre. Grand nombre des prédateurs spécialistes et certains herbivores de cet écosystème fluctuent en fonction du cycle du lièvre. C’est le cas du spermophile arctique, mais ce n’est pas le cas de l’écureuil roux, car il est étroitement lié aux années de paisson de graines d’épinette blanche. Le nombre de petits rongeurs fluctue en fonction de deux modèles. Le campagnol à dos roux et quatre espèces de campagnols Microtus ont un cycle de trois à quatre ans qui semble dicté par les disponibilités alimentaires et le comportement social, tandis que la souris sylvestre a connu d’énormes fluctuations pendant les 38 années qui ont fait l’objet d’une surveillance, sans toutefois afficher de cycles. La production de graines d’épinette blanche varie en fonction des températures et des chutes de pluie, mais n’a pas été influencée par l’ajout de nutriments au fertilisant. Le réchauffement planétaire et le broutage réduit des lièvres ces 20 dernières années ont aidé à accroître l’abondance d’arbustes dans ces forêts. Il sera difficile de prévoir comment ce système changera au fur et à mesure du réchauffement climatique, car même les espèces étroitement liées du même niveau trophique réagissent aux perturbations de manière différente. Nous recommandons la surveillance continue des principales espèces de ces forêts boréales

    Government Geoscience Stimulates Mineral Exploration in the Superior Province, Northern Québec

    This paper summarizes new geologic information, and highlights exploration opportunities in the northeastern part of the Superior Province since 1997, as a result of the Far North Program undertaken by Géologie Québec. The first phase of the program was a regional lake-sediment geochemical survey, where 26,000 samples were collected north of 55°N from an area of approximately 350,000 km2. The resulting database attracted many mining companies to the region and led to numerous mineral discoveries. The second phase, started in 1998, consisted of extensive geological mapping, supplemented by U-Pb geochronological work; by 2003, more than twenty, 1:250,000 mapping projects were completed. The Far North Program is now in its final phase and it will produce a comprehensive geological and metallogenic synthesis of the new data from the areas surveyed. About forty previously unknown volcano-sedimentary belts, numerous mafic-ultramafic intrusions and sixteen different mineral deposit types have been identified. La base de données ainsi constituée a attiré de nombreuses sociétés minières dans la région et de nombreuses découvertes minérales ont été faites. Amorcée en 1998, la deuxième étape a consisté en une cartographie géologique systématique, appuyée par des datations géochronologiques U-Pb. Et, en 2003, plus de 20 cartes à l'échelle 1:250 000 avaient été complétées. Le programme du Grand Nord en est maintenant à sa dernière étape, laquelle aboutira à la production d'une synthèse géologique et métallogénique à partir des nouvelles données provenant des régions étudiées. Environ une quarantaine de bandes volcano-sédimentaires, de nombreuses intrusions mafiques et ultramatiques, et seize types de gisements minéralogiques différents y ont été décrits.     Impact of two rounds of praziquantel mass drug administration on Schistosoma mansoni infection prevalence and intensity: a comparison between community wide treatment and school based treatment in western Kenya

    AbstractThis study compared the effectiveness of the community-wide treatment and school-based treatment approaches in the control of Schistosoma mansoni infections in villages with ⩾25% prevalence in western Kenya. Stool samples from first year students, 9–12year olds and adults (20–55years) were analyzed by the Kato–Katz technique for S. mansoni eggs. After two rounds of treatment, S. mansoni prevalence and intensity levels significantly declined in both treatment approaches. Prevalence comparisons between the two approaches did not show any significant differences following treatment. However, infection intensity levels in the 9–12year old school-attending pupils were significantly higher in the community-wide treatment arm than in the school-based treatment arm. Nevertheless, significant reductions in S. mansoni infection prevalence and intensity levels were achieved among school-age children regardless of the treatment approach used

    A Critical Review of Graphics for Subgroup Analyses in Clinical Trials

    Subgroup analyses are a routine part of clinical trials to investigate whether treatment effects are homogeneous across the study population. Graphical approaches play a key role in subgroup analyses to visualise effect sizes of subgroups, to aid the identification of groups that respond differentially, and to communicate the results to a wider audience. Many existing approaches do not capture the core information and are prone to lead to a misinterpretation of the subgroup effects. In this work, we critically appraise existing visualisation techniques, propose useful extensions to increase their utility and attempt to develop an effective visualisation approach. We focus on forest plots, UpSet plots, Galbraith plots, subpopulation treatment effect pattern plot, and contour plots, and comment on other approaches whose utility is more limited. We illustrate the methods using data from a prostate cancer study

    Mechanistic insights into the C<sub>55</sub>-P targeting lipopeptide antibiotics revealed by structure-activity studies and high-resolution crystal structures

    AbstractThe continued rise of antibiotic resistance is a global concern that threatens to undermine many aspects of modern medical practice. Key to addressing this threat is the discovery and development of new antibiotics that operate by unexploited modes of action. The so-called calcium-dependent lipopeptide antibiotics (CDAs) are an important emerging class of natural products that provides a source of new antibiotic agents rich in structural and mechanistic diversity. Notable in this regard is the subset of CDAs comprising the laspartomycins and amphomycins/friulimicins that specifically target the bacterial cell wall precursor undecaprenyl phosphate (C55-P). In this study we describe the design and synthesis of new C55-P-targeting CDAs with structural features drawn from both the laspartomycin and amphomycin/friulimicin classes. Assessment of these lipopeptides revealed previously unknown and surprisingly subtle structural features that are required for antibacterial activity. High-resolution crystal structures further indicate that the amphomycin/friulimicin-like lipopeptides adopt a unique crystal packing that governs their interaction with C55-P and provides an explanation for their antibacterial effect. In addition, live-cell microscopy studies provide further insights into the biological activity of the C55-P targeting CDAs highlighting their unique mechanism of action relative to the clinically used CDA daptomycin.Microbial Biotechnolog

    A novel heterozygous mutation in the STAT1 SH2 domain causes chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis, atypically diverse infections, autoimmunity, and impaired cytokine regulation

    Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC) is a primary immunodeficiency characterized by persistent or recurrent skin and mucosal surface infections with Candida species. Different gene mutations leading to CMC have been identified. These include various heterozygous gain-of-function (GOF) mutations in signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1) that are not only associated with infections but also with autoimmune manifestations. Recently, two STAT1 GOF mutations involving the Src homology 2 (SH2) domain have been reported, while so far, over 50 mutations have been described mainly in the coiled coil and the DNA-binding domains. Here, we present two members of a Dutch family with a novel STAT1 mutation located in the SH2 domain. T lymphocytes of these patients revealed STAT1 hyperphosphorylation and higher expression of STAT1 target genes. The clinical picture of CMC in our patients could be explained by diminished production of interleukin (IL)-17 and IL-22, cytokines important in the protection against fungal infections

    Patchiness and Demographic Noise in Three Ecological Examples

    Understanding the causes and effects of spatial aggregation is one of the most fundamental problems in ecology. Aggregation is an emergent phenomenon arising from the interactions between the individuals of the population, able to sense only -at most- local densities of their cohorts. Thus, taking into account the individual-level interactions and fluctuations is essential to reach a correct description of the population. Classic deterministic equations are suitable to describe some aspects of the population, but leave out features related to the stochasticity inherent to the discreteness of the individuals. Stochastic equations for the population do account for these fluctuation-generated effects by means of demographic noise terms but, owing to their complexity, they can be difficult (or, at times, impossible) to deal with. Even when they can be written in a simple form, they are still difficult to numerically integrate due to the presence of the "square-root" intrinsic noise. In this paper, we discuss a simple way to add the effect of demographic stochasticity to three classic, deterministic ecological examples where aggregation plays an important role. We study the resulting equations using a recently-introduced integration scheme especially devised to integrate numerically stochastic equations with demographic noise. Aimed at scrutinizing the ability of these stochastic examples to show aggregation, we find that the three systems not only show patchy configurations, but also undergo a phase transition belonging to the directed percolation universality class.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures.
