Evidence for Ubiquitous Collimated Galactic-Scale Outflows along the Star-Forming Sequence at z~0.5
We present an analysis of the MgII 2796, 2803 and FeII 2586, 2600 absorption
line profiles in individual spectra of 105 galaxies at 0.3<z<1.4. The galaxies,
drawn from redshift surveys of the GOODS fields and the Extended Groth Strip,
fully sample the range in star formation rates (SFRs) occupied by the
star-forming sequence with stellar masses log M_*/M_sun > 9.5 at 0.3<z<0.7.
Using the Doppler shifts of the MgII and FeII absorption lines as tracers of
cool gas kinematics, we detect large-scale winds in 66+/-5% of the galaxies.
HST/ACS imaging and our spectral analysis indicate that the outflow detection
rate depends primarily on galaxy orientation: winds are detected in ~89% of
galaxies having inclinations (i) <30 degrees (face-on), while the wind
detection rate is only ~45% in objects having i>50 degrees (edge-on). Combined
with the comparatively weak dependence of the wind detection rate on intrinsic
galaxy properties, this suggests that biconical outflows are ubiquitous in
normal, star-forming galaxies at z~0.5. We find that the wind velocity is
correlated with host galaxy M_* at 3.4-sigma significance, while the equivalent
width of the flow is correlated with host galaxy SFR at 3.5-sigma significance,
suggesting that hosts with higher SFR may launch more material into outflows
and/or generate a larger velocity spread for the absorbing clouds. Assuming
that the gas is launched into dark matter halos with simple, isothermal density
profiles, the wind velocities measured for the bulk of the cool material
(~200-400 km/s) are sufficient to enable escape from the halo potentials only
for the lowest-M_* systems in the sample. However, the outflows typically carry
sufficient energy to reach distances of >50 kpc, and may therefore be a viable
source of cool material for the massive circumgalactic medium observed around

Inhibition by small-molecule ligands of formation of amyloid fibrils of an immunoglobulin light chain variable domain.
Overproduction of immunoglobulin light chains leads to systemic amyloidosis, a lethal disease characterized by the formation of amyloid fibrils in patients' tissues. Excess light chains are in equilibrium between dimers and less stable monomers which can undergo irreversible aggregation to the amyloid state. The dimers therefore must disassociate into monomers prior to forming amyloid fibrils. Here we identify ligands that inhibit amyloid formation by stabilizing the Mcg light chain variable domain dimer and shifting the equilibrium away from the amyloid-prone monomer
Non-market Valuation Biases Due to Aboriginal Cultural Characteristics in Northern Saskatchewan: The Values Structures Component
Current non-market valuation techniques have been developed based on assumptions about values held within the Eurocentred culture. Contentions between cultures over natural resources are hypothesized to occur because of differences in held values resulting in different values being assigned to the resources in question. This study measured the held values of an Aboriginal band in Northern Saskatchewan as the first dimension of a non-market valuation study of natural resources. The Halo and Rings of the Planetary Nebula NGC 40 in the Mid-Infrared
We present imaging and spectroscopy of NGC 40 acquired using the Spitzer
Space Telescope (Spitzer), and the Infrared Space observatory (ISO). These are
used to investigate the nature of emission from the central nebular shell, from
the nebular halo, and from the associated circumnebular rings. It is pointed
out that a variety of mechanisms may contribute to the mid-infrared (MIR)
fluxes, and there is evidence for a cool dust continuum, strong ionic
transitions, and appreciable emission by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
(PAHs). Prior observations at shorter wavelengths also indicate the presence of
warmer grains, and the possible contribution of H2 transitions. It is suggested
that an apparent jet-like structure to the NE of the halo represents one of the
many emission spokes that permeate the shell. The spokes are likely to be
caused by the percolation of UV photons through a clumpy interior shell, whilst
the jet-like feature is enhanced due to locally elevated electron densities; a
result of interaction between NGC 40 and the interstellar medium. It is finally
noted that the presence of the PAH, 21 microns and 30 microns spectral features
testifies to appreciable C/O ratios within the main nebular shell. Such a
result is consistent with abundance determinations using collisionally excited

Noise Kernel and Stress Energy Bi-Tensor of Quantum Fields in Hot Flat Space and Gaussian Approximation in the Optical Schwarzschild Metric
Continuing our investigation of the regularization of the noise kernel in
curved spacetimes [N. G. Phillips and B. L. Hu, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 63}, 104001
(2001)] we adopt the modified point separation scheme for the class of optical
spacetimes using the Gaussian approximation for the Green functions a la
Bekenstein-Parker-Page. In the first example we derive the regularized noise
kernel for a thermal field in flat space. It is useful for black hole
nucleation considerations. In the second example of an optical Schwarzschild
spacetime we obtain a finite expression for the noise kernel at the horizon and
recover the hot flat space result at infinity. Knowledge of the noise kernel is
essential for studying issues related to black hole horizon fluctuations and
Hawking radiation backreaction. We show that the Gaussian approximated Green
function which works surprisingly well for the stress tensor at the
Schwarzschild horizon produces significant error in the noise kernel there. We
identify the failure as occurring at the fourth covariant derivative order.Comment: 21 pages, RevTeX
Gender Differences in Bed Rest: Preliminary Analysis of Vascular Function
Orthostatic intolerance is a recognized consequence of spaceflight. Numerous studies have shown that women are more susceptible to orthostatic intolerance following spaceflight as well as bed rest, the most commonly used ground-based analog for spaceflight. One of the possible mechanisms proposed to account for this is a difference in vascular responsiveness between genders. We hypothesized that women and men would have differing vascular responses to 90 days of 6-degree head down tilt bed rest. Additionally, we hypothesized that vessels in the upper and lower body would respond differently, as has been shown in the animal literature. Thirteen subjects were placed in bedrest for 90 days (8 men, 5 women) at the Flight Analogs Unit, UTMB. Direct arterial and venous measurements were made with ultrasound to evaluate changes in vascular structure and function. Arterial function was assessed, in the arm and leg, during a reactive hyperemia protocol and during sublingual nitroglycerin administration to gauge the contributions of endothelial dependent and independent dilator function respectively. Venous function was assessed in dorsal hand and foot veins during the administration of pharmaceuticals to assess constrictor and dilator function. Both gender and day effects are seen in arterial dilator function to reactive hyperemia, but none are seen with nitroglycerin. There are also differences in the wall thickness in the arm vs the leg during bed rest, which return toward pre-bed rest levels by day 90. More subjects are required, especially females as there is not sufficient power to properly analyze venous function. Day 90 data are most underpowered
