Objective: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the prevalence and variability in suicidality in the general adult population of Europe between 2008 and 2017. Methods: Studies containing original data on suicidality were identified in five electronic databases. Point, 12-month and lifetime prevalences were calculated for various types of suicidality. Pooled prevalence rates were calculated using a random effects model. Subgroup analysis and multivariate meta-regression were also performed. Results: We identified 24 papers containing original data, which provided 97 prevalence rates for suicidality. The pooled point prevalence rate was 3.96% (2.37–5.56), pooled 12-month prevalence 2.9% (1.49–4.32), and pooled lifetime prevalence 5.55% (4.31–6.79). The subgroup analysis showed that lifetime prevalence figures for wishing to be dead and suicidal ideation were higher in areas with a population of less than 3,849 inhabitants and in Eastern Europe. Finally, the multivariate meta-regression showed differences with respect to the period and type of suicidality, lower and upper age thresholds, population size, and study area. Conclusion: Our data showed that approximately 21% of European individuals have wished to be dead at some point during their lifetime. Studies like this are necessary to highlight the need for efforts to prevent and intervene in suicidality

Analysis of a wingtip vortex using Higher Order Dynamical Mode Decomposition

Wingtip vortices are a key element to take into account in the design of any aerial vehicle and the planning of takeoff and landing operations on large-scale airports. In this project, we study the wingtip vortex generated by a wing model in a controlled environment. Specifically, the flow velocity field measured in the wake of a NACA0012 model is analyzed using Higher Order Dynamical Mode Decomposition (HODMD) [1]. That velocity field was obtained using the PIV technique in a towing tank at University of Málaga at a moderate Reynolds number of 40,000. By using HODMD we were able to extract the modes that capture the dissipation of the vortex and characterize its temporal decay. These modes are crucial for the analysis of any element designed to decrease the vortex intensity. These devices, active and passive, are vital in any modern aeronautical application.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech

“Pa’ cuando oigás este tango”: Musicological Contributions to the Study of Tango Song of Alfredo “Tape” Rubín in the XXI Century

In this text, I will try to establish four main axes in the study of the creative career of Alfredo “Tape” Rubín (Argentine composer, poet, guitarist and singersongwriter). An indispensable reference in much of the musical development of the new tango, due to the numerous versions that have been created from his compositions, I will first address his role as singer-songwriter of a new tango evocation, based on the search for traits common to a Creole Gardelian tradition. As a second axis, I will explore the content and meaning of its lyrics, which are likely to generate both real and metaphorical expressions of the city, as well as the ontological manifestation of a dialectic of Buenos Aires identity/alterity. In the third place, the invoice of his compositions will be exhibited, whose traditional format of cantor accompanied by guitars unfolds in a complex renewed language, which reveals specific procedures in the treatment of melody and harmony. Finally, I will expose some hermeneutic possibilities for an analysis of the dimensions that the practice of covering acquires from its songs.Asociación Argentina de MusicologíaFacultad de ArtesInstituto Nacional de Musicología "Carlos Vega

POD analysis of temporal flow patterns in different regimes

Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) has been used broadly in analyzing turbulent flows at high Reynolds numbers, such as flow in a pipe. However, there exists a lack of knowledge in analyzing some other regimes which contain interesting temporal behaviors. We present two study cases with completely different flow regimes showing the advantages of analyzing them using POD. First, we describe an application in creeping flow (very low Reynolds number) in Non-Newtonian fluids. POD helps characterize the different bifurcations of the flow directly related to the movement of stagnation points of the problem. We have also proved the efficiency of this method to store data recovering 90% of the temporal evolution with only a few geometric modes (time-independent) and some temporal modes, which are a single value for each time. Second, we analyze experimental data of a wing tip vortex at moderate Reynolds numbers. The possible attenuation of this kind of vortices is a key criterion for any airport design. By using POD, we were able to describe the vortex and isolate a mode representing the global attenuation of the vortex.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech

Crystal structure dependence of the energy transfer from tb(III) to yb(III) in metal–organic frameworks based in bispyrazolylpyridines

Luminescent mixed lanthanide metal−organic framwork (MOF) materials have been prepared from two polyheterocyclic diacid ligands, 2,6-bis(3-carboxy-1-pyrazolyl)pyridine and 2,6- bis(4-carboxy-1-pyrazolyl)pyridine. The crystal structures of the two organic molecules are presented together with the structures for the MOFs obtained by hydrothermal synthesis either with Yb(III) or mixed Tb(III)/Yb(III) ions. Different coordination architectures result from each ligand, revealing also important differences between the lanthanides. The mixed lanthanide metal−organic frameworks also present diverse luminescent behavior; in the case of 2,6-bis(4-carboxy-1- pyrazolyl)pyridine, where no coordinated water is present in the metal environment, Tb(III) and Yb(III) characteristic emission is observed by excitation of the bispyrazolylpyridine chromophoreThe research leading to these results has received funding from ERCROS S.A. Homeostatic Plasticity and Therapeutic Approaches in Neurodegeneration

    Get PDF
The synapses transmit signals between neurons in an ever-changing fashion. Changes of synaptic transmission arise from numerous mechanisms known as synaptic plasticity. The importance and complexity of the synapse has fueled research into the molecular mechanisms underlying synaptogenesis, synaptic transmission, and plasticity. Particularly, homeostatic plasticity refers to the local changes in synaptic activation to generate local synaptic adaptations and network-wide changes in activity to generate adjustments between excitation and inhibition. This review chapter will focus on synaptic phenomena and mechanisms that are likely to contribute to network homeostasis. In addition, it will be discussed a putative modulation of the signaling mechanisms serving a homeostatic function as a viable therapeutic approach for disease modification in neurological and neurodegenerative disorders. To sum up, the main role of the following players in homeostatic plasticity will be analyzed, based on what a growing body of evidence has suggested recently: BDNF-mediated TrkB system activation; adenosine modulation system; nitric oxide/soluble GC/cGMP signaling; astrocyte involvement—astroglial CB1 receptors; the microtubule-associated neuronal protein Tau; the signaling pathway of the Wnt protein family; extracellular vesicles in the intercellular communication; and estrogen involvement in non-reproductive functions

It does so from a feminist perspective, with the commitment to improving their situation and facilitating with this doctoral thesis the path for those who aspire to be leaders. And it does so from the opinion of people who know the subject and from the political voices who reflect on their trajectory and experience. In the first part of this research, the promotion of women's political participation is contextualised from a contemporary perspective. And the notion of leadership is analysed from three dimensions: representativeness, media, and electoral campaigns. In the second part, the research methodology applied is further developed, using a double exploratory approach. For both phases of the study, the qualitative research technique has been chosen as a priority. In both cases, the sample is intentionally non-probabilistic. The concept of leadership has been deeply analysed from the localised variables identified in the results: equality; representativeness; what role do political parties, the media and social networks play; how electoral campaigns influence; what is the political participation of women from a gender perspective; the transformation of our cultural model; the obstacles that prevent reaching leadership positions; and what steps can be taken to encourage women's leadership in politics
