OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and disease activity in patients with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). METHODS: Patients with JIA, aged ≤18 years, registered at the Rheumatic Diseases Portuguese Register (Reuma.pt) in Portugal and Brazil were included. Age- and sex-specific BMI percentiles were calculated based on WHO growth standard charts and categorized into underweight (P 97). Disease activity was assessed by Juvenile Arthritis Disease Activity Score (JADAS-27). Uni- and multivariate analyses were performed. RESULTS: A total of 275 patients were included. The prevalence of underweight, normal weight, overweight and obesity was 6.9%, 67.3%, 15.3% and 10.5%, respectively. Underweight patients had significantly higher number of active joints (p <0.001), patient's/parent's global assessment of disease activity (PGA) (p=0.020), physician's global assessment of disease activity (PhGA) (p <0.001), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) (p=0.032) and overall higher JADAS-27 (p <0.001), compared to patients with normal weight, overweight and obesity. In the multivariate regression, underweight persisted significantly associated with higher disease activity, compared to normal weight (B=-9.430, p <0.001), overweight (B=-9.295, p=0.001) and obesity (B=-9.120, p=0.001), when adjusted for age, gender, country, ethnicity, JIA category and therapies used. The diagnosis of RF- (B=3.653, p=0.006) or RF+ polyarticular JIA (B=5.287, p=0.024), the absence of DMARD therapy (B=5.542, p <0.001) and the use of oral GC (B=4.984, p=0.002) were also associated with higher JADAS-27. CONCLUSION: We found an independent association between underweight and higher disease activity in patients with JIA. Further studies are needed to understand the underlying mechanisms of this association.publishersversionpublishe
Oxygen delignification has been implemented in bleaching units, as it has
environmental, technical, and economic benefits. This process reduces the
reagents charge in the following bleaching steps, such as chlorine dioxide,
which results in a decrease in AOX. However, the use of oxygen as a delignification
agent is limited due to low selectivity.
The aim of this study is to quantify the yield loss of oxygen delignification
of kraft pulp of Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus nitens and Eucalyptus
urograndis with different kappa numbers. In this sense, the three species
were cooked to obtain a kappa number in the range between 12 and 20.
Afterwards, the pulp was submitted to oxygen delignification in a PARR
reactor, with conditions similar to the industry, it occurred at 98 °C, 6 bar,
70 minutes, 2 % NaOH and 4 % consistency. To characterize the raw and
bleach pulp, the kappa number was determined, the intrinsic viscosity that
permits to evaluate the degree of degradation of cellulose, the content of
hexenuronic acids and the pentosans content.
The kraft cooking of the woods revealed the need for a higher active alkaline
load for E. urograndis to obtain pulps with the same kappa number. The
increase in alkaline load in kraft cooking decreases the value of all the
characteristics of the pulp. After oxygen delignification, the raw pulps with
the lowest kappa number showed a reduction of approximately 5 units, the
pulps with the highest kappa number reduced between 7 and 9 units. The
intrinsic viscosity and the pentosans content decreased in relation to the
results obtained for the raw pulp. Regarding the selectivity of the process,
it proved to be more selective for the species E. globulus and less selective
for E. urograndis. The hexenuronic acid content of raw pulp and bleached
pulp was similar, which proved that they do not react in an oxygen stage.
Finally, the graphical representation of the variation of yield loss with the
drop of the kappa number is translated by a linear function. The loss of
oxygen delignification yield was between 1 and 3 %, being higher in the
species E. urograndis. The E. globulus and E. nitens yield were similar,
however the E. nitens was the one that showed the lowest loss. The variation
in yield loss between species can be explained by the proportion of lignin
and pentosans loss.
The results of the study conducted in the region of Beira Interior (Central Portugal)
are presented, aiming the creation of a predictive map that helps to identify probable
areas of occurrence of proto-historic settlements, using only free software.
For a better understanding of some of the factors that led to the choice of
certain inhabited places with this chronology, 15 environmental and cultural variables
were analyzed, of which only 4 were selected for the final model, three of
these were cultural, thus stressing the importance of including this type of predictors
in archaeological models. This was achieved through a multivariate binary
logistic regression with bootstrapping, having the resulting map four probability
classes: low, medium, high and very high, corresponding the latest to 1.5% of the
study area and yielding a value of 0.975 for the Kvamme gain Index.
A theoretical validation was performed using a sample of known sites, intending
in the future to continue testing through field work.

Resilience, innovation and collapse of settlement networks in later Bronze Age Europe: New survey data from the southern Carpathian Basin.
Societies of the later Early to Middle Bronze Age (ca. 2200-1600 BC) in the Carpathian Basin exhibited complex, hierarchical and regionally influential socio-political organisation that came to an abrupt end in the 16th century BC. Considered a collapse by some, this change was characterised by abandonment of virtually all central places / nodes in settlement networks. Until recently, the complexity that characterised the period was believed to have substantially diminished alongside depopulation. This model was reinforced by a combination of the loss of established external networks and low-resolution knowledge of where and how people lived in the first stages of the Late Bronze Age (between 1600 and 1200 BC). We contest the idea of a diminished Late Bronze Age and argue that a fully opposite trajectory can be identified-increased scale, complexity and density in settlement systems and intensification of long-distance networks. We present results of a settlement survey in the southern Pannonian Plain using remote and pedestrian prospection, augmented by small-scale excavations. New absolute dates are used to define the occupational history of sites dating primarily between 1500-1200 BC. We argue that climate change played a substantial role in in the transformation of settlement networks, creating a particular ecological niche enabling societies to thrive. New and specific forms of landscape exploitation developed that were characterised by proximity to wetlands and minor watercourses. In this context, the largest monuments of Bronze Age Europe were created and inhabited. In considering the origins and demise of these megasites and related settlements, we provide a new model for Late Bronze Age societies in the Carpathian Basin and their regional relevance
