Current changes in morphology of the city center of Katowice
Artykuł dotyczy przemian morfologicznofunkcjonalnych
zachodzących współcześnie w przestrzeni miejskiej śródmieścia Katowic. Ich główną motywacją jest
dążenie do zmiany wizerunku miasta oraz przekształcenia go w nowoczesny ośrodek usługowy i kulturalny, zalążek metropolii.
przebudowa symboli miasta, rozwój funkcji metropolitalnych i dążenie do przywrócenia funkcji handlowych
Revitalisation for everybody? The Landscape Park Duisburg–North
Social inclusion by revitalisation? The potential of disused industrial areas as an opportunity for mitigating social polarisation
The paper concerns the relation between revitalisation projects and socio-economic polarisation, and discusses the potential of new urban spaces for social inclusion. The phenomenon is considered on the example of recreational facilities that have emerged from brownfields located in the Ruhr region (Germany). It was ascertained that the diversity of implemented projects was important in terms of the significance of revitalisation processes for social polarisation tendencies. It allowed regional authorities to create income-generating facilities and spaces that can be used regardless of income, and to resolve deficits in urban recreational facilities. It was also noted that the Ruhr examples could provide guidance for the recently begun revitalisation processes in the Upper Silesian industrial area (Poland)

Morfologiczne przemiany śródmieścia Katowic
W artykule przeprowadzono analizę planu miasta metodą M.R.G. Conzena.
Wielokulturowe dziedzictwo materialne Katowic
The paper applies to the city of Katowice, which in the past was a multicultural town, inhabited by Silesians, Germans, Jews and Poles at the same time, and which is today a city of one nation, inhabited by Poles. Education and wages
betreffen. This master thesis analyses the micro determinants of investment in education. The main
assumption is that any investment is undertaken to maximize the stream of future receipts.
Two alternative approaches are presented. The first one is that education increases the
productivity of an individual, and the second one is that it serves as a signal of some
characteristic of a potential worker. I would like to argue further that these two approaches do
not exclude one another. Job market signalling can be a useful extension of human capital
theories. Then, using the example of Poland in 1999 and 2005, I shall attempt to find the
return on education. I will examine the influence of education, controlling also the influence
of socio-demographic factors on the wages. This dependency can be checked by taking
advantage of the least squares method and taking data from PGSS
The contemporary role of spoil tips in the landscape of the Ruhr Metropolis
Spoil tips are an integral part of the cultural landscape of post-industrial regions developed on the basis of heavy industry. Their role in the landscape, however, evolved. As artificial forms, they were initially perceived negatively, only after a while they began to appreciate their values. The aim of the paper was to examine the role that spoil tips play currently in the Ruhr Metropolis (Germany). Studies have shown that they are not only a mainstay of greenery in a strongly urbanized region, and a place of everyday recreation of its residents, but also a heritage worthy of protection in the form of landscape and thematic parks, or a tourist attraction of supra-regional scope

Revitalisation of spoil tips and socio-economic polarisation – a case study of Ruhr area (Germany)
The paper discusses issues about the revitalisation of spoil tips, socio-economic polarisation and social exclusion in the field of municipal recreational activities based on an example of the largest post-industrial region in Europe – the Ruhr area in Germany. Revitalisation of brownfield areas very often leads to the creation of leisure facilities of various types (with a range of entrance fees) and because of this it may mitigate, or exacerbate, the severity of these negative phenomena. In the Ruhr area there are 104 spoil tips of different origins (mine tips, slag heaps, rubbish dumps), sizes and shapes (from conical heaps, through table mountains shaped tips and intentionally shaped for landscape tips, to major tips) and state of preservation. The research has shown that it is possible to use the majority of these spoil tips in the Ruhr area (87 of them) as leisure facilities as they have been changed into green areas, parks, playgrounds, locations for sports activities and tourist attractions after their restoration. Furthermore, they are mostly accessible free of charge and may serve a wide range of people – from locals to visitors, from children to senior citizens etc., regardless of their income. As such they may mitigate the socio-economic polarisation tendencies in the region
