The elderly population is more vulnerable to dehydration, not only because of physiological changes related to the aging process but also due to pathological, social, iatrogenic and environmental causes. Diagnosing dehydration is not easy, since clinical signs and laboratory tests are less specific in this age group and may not be conclusive to a diagnosis. Therefore, in clinical practice, it is necessary to pay double attention so that dehydration does not go unnoticed, since early diagnosis and adequate treatment are essential to avoid complications. If left untreated, dehydration presents high morbidity and mortality rates in the elderly. Preventing dehydration, at home and in care units, is incontestably important nowadays in aged societies. The main purpose of this article is to review the recent literature on the subject “dehydration in the elderly”, concerning all aspects already referred which are so pertinent to this population

The main objective of this study was the validation of the Healthy Lifestyle Questionnaire (EVS II), using a confirmatory factorial analysis of the measurement model, with veteran athletes. A total of 348 veteran Portuguese athletes of both genders, aged between 30 and 60 years (M = 41.64, SD = 9.83), of whom 200 were males and 148 were females, from several sports. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis demonstrate the adequacy of the adapted version of the EVS II, as the factorial structure (6 factors/24 items) has acceptable validity indexes: χ2 = 305.925, p = 0.000, df = 120.017, χ2/df = 2.549, NFI (Normed Fit Index) = 0.909, TLI (Tucker Lewis Index) = 0.918, CFI (Comparative Fit Index) = 0.944, GFI (Goodness of Fit Index) = 0.944, AGFI (Adjusted Goodness of Fit Index) = 0.909, SRMR (Standardized Root Mean Square Residual) = 0.048, RMSEA (Root Mean Square of Approximation) = 0.060, allowing evaluation of the dimensions of balanced diet, respect for mealtime, tobacco and alcohol consumption, other drugs consumption and resting habits. The adaptation to sport of the Portuguese version of EVS II can be used with reasonable confidence in the evaluation of healthy lifestyles in the context of sportinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Sociedade Central de Cervejas e Bebidas (SCC) is one of biggest players in the Portuguese beer industry. In 2013, together with Unicer, its biggest competitor, both groups owned 94% of the market. Part of the Heineken International Company since 2007, SCC was invited to be part of the worldwide launch of Affligem, the new global brand from Heineken group. Aiming to be the beacon brand in the specialty beer category, Affligem is a Belgian abbey beer with almost one thousand years of history. Besides trying to conquer this segment and fighting against the growth of national craft beer brands’ popularity, Affligem intended to address meal occasions. From a vast and extensive market research, SCC discovered that meal occasions were not being associated with beer. And what was the challenge? While the specialty beer segment represented only 2% of the entire industry, mainstream brands led the market with a share of almost 90%. Consumers were changing their buying behavior, being more price sensitive and doing less out of home activities. Additionally, 70-80% of buying decisions were made inside the store. With a limited marketing budget, Diogo, one of SCC’s Premium Beer & Specialties brand managers knew how important it was to choose the right packaging: entering in off-trade with loose bottle or 3-pack. It is related how the change from the reed houses to the wooden sheds took place and how was the day-by-day of fishermen and their families during the tuna fishing season, from March to June. In the course of this research it was discovered that such fishing community took place in Faro beach for long decades, involved a large group of fishermen and their families that lived there, in a structured way. The main results we hope to achieve are the general awareness of this heritage and its dissemination. This research was based on documentary analysis, photographic and bibliographic research but, more importantly, interviews with people involved in this art, that still remains. During the development of this research, limitations were found due to the scarcity of available information and to the advanced age of the people involved, now with around 90 years old. That's why there's an urgency to make an adequate registration and disclosure of this heritage. This paper is original because there aren't many works about this theme under this point of view, taking Faro beach as object of study. As a vernacular heritage, it must be valued, so, publishing such work would influence the society in general, but primarily, the region's society, to alert them to a value that has been forgotten and, at the same time, clarify the future generations, helping to preserve the collective memory of a professional art that disappeared from the Algarve.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Monitoring of biological processes in microalgae production using Fluorescence Spectroscopy

    Get PDF
Microalgae industrial production is nowadays viewed as a solution for environmental conscious and sustainable alternative production of fuel, feed, food and chemicals. Throughout the years, several technological advances have been studied and implemented that increased the competitiveness of microalgae production. However, online monitoring and a real-time process control of a microalgae production factory still requires development to support economic sustainability. In this work, fluorescence spectroscopy coupled with chemometric modelling is studied as an online monitoring tool to be used in microalgae production. Fluorescence spectroscopy is a noninvasive and highly sensitive technique, able to detect instantaneously several natural fluorophores but also the interferences between them and the environmental media. Chemometric methods are often used to deconvolute the information within the fluorescence matrices, known as excitation-emission matrices (EMMs), and to determine the relationship between them and the parameters to be monitored. To prove the potential of fluorescence spectroscopy coupled with chemometric modelling techniques, different strategies are studied. Firstly, the EEMs of the spectra are used as raw data, without pre-treatment for removal of water scatter and inner-filter effects. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is used to extract the meaningful information from the spectra, resulting in Principal Components (PCs). Through Projection to Latent Structures (PLS) modelling, prediction models are developed using the PCs from the fluorescence EEMs as inputs, to find linear correlations with the parameters to be monitored, the outputs. A second strategy is studied with pre-treated EEMs. With these EEMs, two input strategies in the PLS models are tested: using directly the EEMs in PLS or compressing the EEMs into PCs though PCA prior to PLS. Two marine microalgae are used in these studies, Dunaliella salina and Nannochloropsis oceanica. Five parameters are monitored – cell concentration, cell viability, pigments concentration, fatty acids composition and nitrogen concentration – in four different processes – cultivation, product formation (carotenoids and lipids), harvesting by membrane filtration and permeate recover. The combination of fluorescence spectroscopy, with its high sensitivity and resolution, coupled with chemometric analysis for data pre-treatment and development of prediction models, enhances th

Almadrava: a proposal for a touristic revival

    Get PDF
It was very common to see the establishment of the tuna’s fishermen in the Algarvian beaches, from April to June or August. The Arraiais (fishing yards) in the sand, strategically placed near the Almadravas (tuna nets) placed in the sea, had their own socioeconomic relations and their own temporary urban landscape. In this paper, it is elaborated a touristic proposal, based in the tuna fishing theme. There are almost no offers for touristic proposals, based in tuna fishing heritage, in Algarve. We believe that this may be an alternative to the high season, because of its meaning during the tuna fishing season and, due to Algarve geographical location, it is also related to the Mediterranean Diet. This proposal can enhance the awareness of the loss of this heritage, being a way of spreading and reviving something that has been lost and forgotten.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Employers and employees: each one in home the tuna fishermen and the company s owners

This article describes, in a general way, the provisional housing in the Arraial of Faro’s beach, Algarve, Portugal, where fishermen lived during the tuna fishing season (50s and 60s) and which already disappeared, and the existing houses in the city of Faro, where the owners of the fishing company lived. The transition from thatched roof houses to the wooden pavilions on the beach, which housed fishermen and their families during the tuna fishing season, from March to June, and the houses owned by the employers, are described. Two of the main objectives to be achieved is to disseminate this heritage, part of which disappeared, and to rouse the population's awareness, especially the local population, about the danger of its total disappearance. This research was based on documentary, photographic and bibliographical analyses and also on interviews with people involved in this activity, and who are now about 90 years old, which constitutes, beyond the scarce information that exists, an important limitation to the development of this work. This is the reason why it is urgent to register and disclosure this heritage, given the advanced age of those who witnessed in the first person all this experience and art. Being a heritage that characterizes this region, it must be valued and transmitted to the generations to come. Otherwise, there will exist a great risk of its complete disappearance, both physically and from the collective memory of the community. The originality of this paper is the taken approach: based on the tuna fishery in Faro, it performs a characterization of the fishermen's dwellings, located on the beach, and those of the employers, located in the city.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Transcontextual model application in the prediction of veteran judo athletes’ life satisfaction

Background and Study Aim: Despite recognised benefits of regular physical activity for health, the percentage of individuals linking with a physical activity practice sufficient to confer health benefits is low. The aim of current work is knowledge about effects of an extension of the motivation trans-contextual model application, specifically in the prediction of life satisfaction by veteran judo athletes. Material and Methods: It was used a sample of 99 Portuguese veteran judo athletes of both genders, aged between 30 and 76 years (M = 42.61 ±9.75), where through questionnaires were measured: basic psychological needs satisfaction, motivation, planned behaviour variables and life satisfaction. Results: The structural equations model showed that autonomy perception positively and significantly predicts autonomous motivation. In its turn it positively and significantly predicts intentions. Conclusions: Life satisfaction is positively and significantly predicted by intentions. Results authorise to emphasise the importance of fostering autonomy, since this will favour autonomous motivation, promoting a higher behavioural control over the practitioners’ intentions, thus generating a higher life satisfaction.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Esperança no Contexto da Gravidez de Risco: contributo para o estudo da esperança no processo gravídico de risco médico, psicológico e social

    Get PDF
This study aims to expand the knowledge about hope in situations of pregnancy risk, through a quantitative and cross-sectional study with two groups (group of pregnant women with signs of medical, psychological and social risk; group of pregnant women without risk). We intend to analyze the impact that presence of risk implies to the levels of hope experienced, and to explore sociodemographic and family variables that significantly influence hope in both groups. The sample was collected in Bissaya Barreto Maternity, in Coimbra. It is composed 196 pregnant women, aged 18 to 43 years. Levels of hope were evaluated by applying the Adult Hope Scale (AHS). The results indicate that women whose pregnancy has an associated risk have lower values of hope, but only in the initiative subscale. No differences were found in hope levels depending on the kind of risk (medical, psychological, social). The variable specifically related to pregnancy, which revealed a more significant impact on hope, was the planned or accidental nature of pregnancy. Differences were found in levels of hope depending on qualifications, marital status, cohabitation with spouse, monthly income, (un)employment, number of challenges faced and the presence of institutional support. The results of this study represent a contribution to the theoretical understanding of pregnancy and to the development of more effective intervention strategies in risk situations
