    Particle release fromrefit operations in shipyards: Exposure, toxicity and environmental implications

    European harbours are known to contribute to air quality degradation.While most of the literature focuses on emissions from stacks or logistics operations, ship refit and repair activities are also relevant aerosol sources in EU harbour areas. Main activities include abrasive removal of filler and spray painting with antifouling coatings/primers/topcoats. This work aimed to assess ultrafine particle (UFP) emissions from ship maintenance activities and their links with exposure, toxicity and health risks for humans and the aquatic environment. Aerosol emissions were monitored during mechanical abrasion of surface coatings under real-world operating conditions in two scenarios in the Mallorca harbour (Spain). Different types of UFPs were observed: (1) highly regular (triangular, hexagonal) engineered nanoparticles (Ti-, Zr-, Fe-based), embedded as nano-additives in the coatings, and (2) irregular, incidental particles emitted directly or formed during abrasion. Particle number concentrationsmonitored were in the range of industrial activities such as drilling or welding (up to 5 ∗ 105/cm3, mean diameters <30 nm). The chemical composition of PM4 aerosols was dominated by metallic tracers in the coatings (Ti, Al, Ba, Zn). In vitro toxicity of PM2 aerosols evidenced reduced cell viability and a moderate potential for cytotoxic effects. While best practices (exhaust ventilation, personal protective equipment, dust removal) were in place, it is unlikely that exposures and environmental release can be fully avoided at all times. Thus, it is advisable that health and safety protocols should be comprehensive to minimise exposures in all types of locations (near- andfar-field) and periods (activity and non-activity). Potential release to coastal surface waters of metallic engineered and incidental nanomaterials, as well as fine and coarse particles (in the case of settled dust), should be assessed and avoided

    The current COVID-19 disease pandemic demands wearing face masks for doing physical activity. The use of a mask requires low intensity of the activity. The Physical Education subject is essential to know how to determine the intensity of physical activity. The aim of this proposal is to teach students to identify the intensity of physical activity through effort perception. This practical proposal is aimed at students in the third year of Secondary Education. The proposal consists of four activities to be carried out during 11 sessions. In conclusion, it is expected that students become aware of their own possibilities in different physical activities with suitable intensity. This ability to perceive and differentiate between intensities will help them to practice physical activity with a positive and healthy attitude.La situación actual de pandemia por el COVID-19 demanda el uso de mascarilla para la práctica de actividad física. El uso de mascarilla requiere que la intensidad de dicha actividad no sea alta. La asignatura de Educación Física es fundamental para que se conozca como determinar la intensidad de la actividad física. El objetivo de la presente propuesta es enseñar al alumnado a identificar la intensidad de la actividad física a través de la percepción de su esfuerzo. Esta propuesta práctica está dirigida al alumnado de tercero de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria. La propuesta se compone de cuatro actividades para desarrollar durante 11 sesiones. En conclusión, se espera que el alumnado tome conciencia de sus propias posibilidades a la hora de afrontar actividades físicas con una intensidad adecuada.     Human papillomavirus type 18 E5 oncoprotein cooperates with E6 and E7 in promoting cell viability and invasion and in modulating the cellular redox state

    BACKGROUND High-risk human papillomaviruses (HR-HPVs) are the etiological agents of cervical cancer. Among them, types 16 and 18 are the most prevalent worldwide. The HPV genome encodes three oncoproteins (E5, E6, and E7) that possess a high transformation potential in culture cells when transduced simultaneously. In the present study, we analysed how these oncoproteins cooperate to boost key cancer cell features such as uncontrolled cell proliferation, invasion potential, and cellular redox state imbalance. Oxidative stress is known to contribute to the carcinogenic process, as reactive oxygen species (ROS) constitute a potentially harmful by-product of many cellular reactions, and an efficient clearance mechanism is therefore required. Cells infected with HR-HPVs can adapt to oxidative stress conditions by upregulating the formation of endogenous antioxidants such as catalase, glutathione (GSH), and peroxiredoxin (PRX). OBJECTIVES The primary aim of this work was to study how these oncoproteins cooperate to promote the development of certain cancer cell features such as uncontrolled cell proliferation, invasion potential, and oxidative stress that are known to aid in the carcinogenic process. METHODS To perform this study, we generated three different HaCaT cell lines using retroviral transduction that stably expressed combinations of HPV-18 oncogenes that included HaCaT E5-18, HaCaT E6/E7-18, and HaCaT E5/E6/E7-18. FINDINGS Our results revealed a statistically significant increment in cell viability as measured by MTT assay, cell proliferation, and invasion assays in the cell line containing the three viral oncogenes. Additionally, we observed that cells expressing HPV-18 E5/E6/E7 exhibited a decrease in catalase activity and a significant augmentation of GSH and PRX1 levels relative to those of E5, E6/E7, and HaCaT cells.     Removal efficiency for emerging contaminants in a WWTP from Madrid (Spain) after secondary and tertiary treatment and environmental impact on the Manzanares River

    The effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) can be an important contamination source for receiving waters. In this work, a comprehensive study on the impact of a WWTP from Madrid on the aquatic environment has been performed, including a wide number of pharmaceuticals and pesticides, among them those included in the European Watch List. 24-h composite samples of influent (IWW) and effluent wastewater after secondary (EWW2) and after secondary + tertiary treatment (EWW3) were monitored along two campaigns. Average weekly concentrations in IWW and EWW2 and EWW3 allowed estimating the removal efficiency of the WWTP for pharmaceutical active substances (PhACs). In addition, the impact of EWW3 on the water quality of the Manzanares River was assessed, in terms of PhAC and pesticide concentrations, through analysis of the river water collected upstream and downstream of the discharge point. After a preliminary risk assessment, a detailed evaluation of the impact on the aquatic environment, including a toxicological study and screening of pharmaceutical metabolites, was made for the seven most relevant PhACs: sulfamethoxazole, azithromycin and clarithromycin (antibiotics), metoprolol (antihypertensive), diclofenac (anti-inflammatory/analgesic), irbesartan (antihypertensive), and the antidepressant venlafaxine. Among selected PhACs, irbesartan, clarithromycin and venlafaxine presented moderate or high risk in the river water downstream of the discharge. Albeit no acute toxicity was detected, more detailed studies should be carried out for these substances, including additional toxicological studies, to set up potential sublethal and chronic effects on aquatic organisms.Funding for open access charge: CRUE-Universitat Jaume

    Measurements of tt¯ spin correlations and top quark polarization using dilepton final states in pp collisions at √s=8  TeV

    et al.Measurements of the top quark-antiquark (tt¯) spin correlations and the top quark polarization are presented for tt¯ pairs produced in pp collisions at √s=8  TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.5  fb−1 collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The measurements are performed using events with two oppositely charged leptons (electrons or muons) and two or more jets, where at least one of the jets is identified as originating from a bottom quark. The spin correlations and polarization are measured from the angular distributions of the two selected leptons, both inclusively and differentially, with respect to the invariant mass, rapidity, and transverse momentum of the tt¯ system. The measurements are unfolded to the parton level and found to be in agreement with predictions of the standard model. A search for new physics in the form of anomalous top quark chromo moments is performed.     Search for supersymmetry in electroweak production with photons and large missing transverse energy in pp collisions at √s=8TeV

Final states with photons and large missing transverse energy ( EmissT ) were examined. The data sample was collected in pp collisions at √s=8TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to 7.4fb. The analysis focuses on scenarios in which the lightest neutralino has bino- or wino-like components, resulting in decays to photons and gravitinos, where the gravitinos escape undetected. The data were obtained using a specially designed trigger with dedicated low thresholds, providing good sensitivity to signatures with photons, EmissT , and low hadronic energy. No excess of events over the standard model expectation is observed. The results are interpreted using the model of general gauge mediation. With the wino mass fixed at 10GeV above that of the bino, wino masses below 710GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. Constraints are also set in the context of two simplified models, for which the analysis sets the lowest cross section limits on the electroweak production of supersymmetric particles.Funded by SCOAP3.Peer Reviewe

    Search for narrow resonances decaying to dijets in proton-proton collisions at √s=13 TeV

    et al.A search for narrow resonances in proton-proton collisions at √s=13  TeV is presented. The invariant mass distribution of the two leading jets is measured with the CMS detector using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.4  fb−1. The highest observed dijet mass is 6.1 TeV. The distribution is smooth and no evidence for resonant particles is observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the production cross section for narrow resonances with masses above 1.5 TeV. When interpreted in the context of specific models, the limits exclude string resonances with masses below 7.0 TeV, scalar diquarks below 6.0 TeV, axigluons and colorons below 5.1 TeV, excited quarks below 5.0 TeV, color-octet scalars below 3.1 TeV, and W′ bosons below 2.6 TeV.     We prove that the bicrossed product of two groups is a quotient of the pushout of two semidirect products. A matched pair of groups (H,G,α,β)(H, G, \alpha, \beta) is deformed using a combinatorial datum (σ,v,r)(\sigma, v, r) consisting of an automorphism σ\sigma of HH, a permutation vv of the set GG and a transition map r:GHr: G\to H in order to obtain a new matched pair (H,(G,),α,β)\bigl(H, (G,*), \alpha', \beta' \bigl) such that there exist an σ\sigma-invariant isomorphism of groups HαβGHαβ(G,)H {}_{\alpha} \bowtie_{\beta} G \cong H {}_{\alpha'} \bowtie_{\beta'} (G,*). Moreover, if we fix the group HH and the automorphism \sigma \in \Aut(H) then any σ\sigma-invariant isomorphism HαβGHαβGH {}_{\alpha} \bowtie_{\beta} G \cong H {}_{\alpha'} \bowtie_{\beta'} G' between two arbitrary bicrossed product of groups is obtained in a unique way by the above deformation method.
