This paper describes the procedure for the selection of three lactic acid bacteria strains from 40 indigenous strains isolated in two cellars of theSpanish region of Castilla-LaMancha.The isolates were identified by classical microbiological and molecular techniques: Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis (pFGE) of bacterial chromosome fragments obtained from restriction enzymes.Selection was carried out considering the capacity to perform malolactic fermentation (MLF) in wine and the resistance to high alcoholic percentages and low pH levels. Three isolates (two Lactobacillus planta Tum and one Oenococcus oeni) which were able to pass the above mentioned tests were selected. These isolates produced low volatile acidity, showed a moderate resistance to SO2 and did not cause any degradation of residual sugars

Comparison of aromatic composition of an endangered variety ('Albilla Dorada') with other recognized aromatic varieties

'Albilla Dorada' is a local and endangered grape variety. It was correctly identified beforehand by analysing six microsatellite regions recommended by the GENRES 081 project plus six other additional regions, resulting in one new genotype not described for any variety according to the literature consulted. The object of this paper is to characterize the aromatic composition of this grape vine genotype not previously described. The minority volatile compounds in the grapes were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) and compared with those of eight known aromatic cultivars: 'Albillo Real', 'Macabeo', 'Malvasía Aromática', 'Gewürztraminer', 'Viognier', 'Malvasía Riojana', 'Riesling' and 'Moscatel de Grano Menudo'. Statistically significant differences between varieties were found as regards the different fractions making up the aromatic composition. 'Albilla Dorada' differed from the rest in that it had higher proportions of alcohols, benzene alcohols and norisoprenoids. In the case of the terpene fraction, it was the variety with the highest proportions of citronellol and terpene hydroxides. Results of this work point out 'Albilla Dorada' is a variety with a singular aromatic identity and highlight the necessity of recovering it before its total disappearance.

A comparative study between single gas and mixed gas permeation of polyether-block-amide type copolymer membranes

We analyze the gas separation performance of five polyether-block-amide type copolymers (Pebax® 1657, Renew®, 2533, 3533 and 4533). These codes are composed of different hard and rubbery segments with different proportions. Dense membranes were prepared by the casting-solution method and studied by elemental, thermogravimetric and X-ray diffraction analyses, FTIR-ATR spectroscopy and single and mixed gas permeation. Codes with the best separation performance are those of polyethylene oxide as the soft phase (Pebax® 1657 and Renew®) due to the more intense interactions of this segment with CO2, which increases the CO2/N2 solubility selectivity (17.5 and 30.5 for Pebax® 1657 and Renew®, respectively) and hence the CO2/N2 separation selectivity of the membrane (36 and 37 for Pebax® 1657 and Renew®, respectively, obtained from mixed gas permeation). It is also noticeable that the proportion of the soft phase in the copolymer determines the permeability of CO2. It was found that the codes with a greater soft/hard segment ratio (Pebax® 2533 and 3533) have also a greater permeability value (239 and 220 Barrer for Pebax® 2533 and 3533, respectively, measured by mixed gas permeation). Pebax® Renew® was the polymer with the best separation performance with CO2 permeabilities of 167 and 164 Barrer and CO2/N2 selectivities of 41 and 37, measured by single and mixed gas permeation, respectively. The comparison between the single and mixture gas permeation results revealed a relatively good correspondence between both for most of the Pebax® codes tuned by the solubility and diffusion properties of the polymers. © 2022 The Authors

Myxofibroma of the maxilla. Reconstruction with iliac crest graft and dental implants after tumor resection

    Get PDF
Odontogenic fibromyxomas are benign odontogenic tumors of mesenchymal origin of rare presentation in the oral cavity, which exhibit locally aggressive behavior and are prone to local recurrence. The controversy has mainly been on therapeutic management with recommendations varying, depending on the clinical cases, from simple curettage of lesion to segmental bone resection. We present a case report describing the reconstruction of an osseous defect in the maxilla and the restoration with dental implants in a 32 year old female patient after radical surgical excision due to an odontogenic fibromyxoma with locally aggressive behavior. The primary reconstruction of maxillary discontinuity defect was carried out by an immediate non-vascularized cortico-cancellous iliac crest graft. Using a computer-guided system for the implant treatment-planning, three dental implants were secondary placed in the bone graft by means of flapless implant surgery. The patient was subsequently restored with an implant-supported fixed prosthesis that has remained in continuous function for a period of three years. The surgical, reconstructive and restorative treatment sequence and techniques are discussed. © Medicina Oral S. L

Generation of femtosecond paraxial beams with arbitrary spatial distribution

    Get PDF
We present an approach to generate paraxial laser beams with arbitrary spatial distribution in the femtosecond time regime. The proposed technique is based upon a pair of volume phase holographic gratings working in parallel arrangement. It exploits the spatial coherence properties of the incoming laser beam in a compact and robust setup that mitigates angular and spatial chirp. The gratings were recorded in a photopolymerizable glass with a high optical damage threshold and a large optical throughput. Setup performance is studied and experimentally demonstrated by generating Laguerre-Gaussian femtosecond pulses. © 2010 Optical Society of America. We thank Fransisco del Monte for valuable advice and CAI-UCM facilities. Study of Melamine-Formaldehyde/Phase Change Material Microcapsules for the Preparation of Polymer Films by Extrusion

    Get PDF
n-Eicosane-melamine formaldehyde microcapsules of an average size of 1.1 µm and latent heat of fusion of 146.2 ± 5.3 J/g have been prepared. They have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, calorimetric techniques, and thermogravimetric analyses. Under processing conditions, the microcapsules apparently preserved their properties, also maintaining their n-eicosane loading and heat storage capacity under washing conditions (water with detergent at 60¿C). The microcapsules synthesis has been scaled up for the fabrication of functional films by extrusion. For that, polymer films containing 10 wt.% of microcapsules were prepared at a pilot plant level. In those films, even though a fraction of the n-eicosane loading was lost during the extrusion process, the microcapsules showed good compatibility within the polyamide. The percentage of PCM in the polyamide 6 films was estimated by TGA, verifying also the heat storage capacity predicted by DSC (2.6 ± 0.7 J/g). © 2022 by the authors. Get PDF
AimsThe purpose of this study is to evaluate the result of diagnostic and therapeutic arthroscopy in association with Karlsson technique.Material And MethodsBetween 2004 and 2009, 11 patients were operated by ankle arthroscopic surgery associated with Karlsson technique. The mean age was 25 years (range 13-45). Arthroscopy was performed first and secondly the lateral approach to ligament repair. Peroneal-calcaneal ligament wasn injuried and repaired in 4 cases. AOFAS scale was used for clinical and functional evaluation, and patients were asked about subjective satisfaction. Complications were recorded.ResultsAt a mean follow-up of 11 months the mean final score was 84 points on the AOFAS scale. The subjective assessment was excellent in 7 cases, good in 2 and poor in 2. There were 2 cases of CRPS and one patient was reoperated by Castaing II technique.ConclusionsWe believe that the association of arthroscopy prior to the reconstruction is useful for associated joint lesion diagnosis, providing important information for the functional prognosis of the joint

Assessing the impact of physical exercise on cognitive function in older medical patients during acute hospitalization: secondary analysis of a randomized trial

    Get PDF
Background: Acute illness requiring hospitalization frequently is a sentinel event leading to long-term disability in older people. Prolonged bed rest increases the risk of developing cognitive impairment and dementia in acutely hospitalized older adults. Exercise protocols applied during acute hospitalization can prevent functional decline in older patients, but exercise benefits on specific cognitive domains have not been previously investigated. We aimed to assess the effects of a multicomponent exercise intervention for cognitive function in older adults during acute hospitalization. Methods and findings: We performed a secondary analysis of a single-blind randomized clinical trial (RCT) conducted from February 1, 2015, to August 30, 2017 in an Acute Care of the Elderly (ACE) unit in a tertiary public hospital in Navarre (Spain). 370 hospitalized patients (aged ≥75 years) were randomly allocated to an exercise intervention (n = 185) or a control (n = 185) group (usual care). The intervention consisted of a multicomponent exercise training program performed during 5–7 consecutive days (2 sessions/day). The usual care group received habitual hospital care, which included physical rehabilitation when needed. The main outcomes were change in executive function from baseline to discharge, assessed with the dual-task (i.e., verbal and arithmetic) Gait Velocity Test (GVT) and the Trail Making Test Part A (TMT-A). Changes in the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) test and verbal fluency ability were also measured after the intervention period. The physical exercise program provided significant benefits over usual care. At discharge, the exercise group showed a mean increase of 0.1 m/s (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.07, 0.13; p < 0.001) in the verbal GVT and 0.1 m/s (95% CI, 0.08, 0.13; p < 0.001) in the arithmetic GVT over usual care group. There was an apparent improvement in the intervention group also in the TMT-A score (−31.1 seconds; 95% CI, −49.5, −12.7 versus −3.13 seconds; 95% CI, −16.3, 10.2 in the control group; p < 0.001) and the MMSE score (2.10 points; 95% CI, 1.75, 2.46 versus 0.27 points; 95% CI, −0.08, 0.63; p < 0.001). Significant benefits were also observed in the exercise group for the verbal fluency test (mean 2.16 words; 95% CI, 1.56, 2.74; p < 0.001) over the usual care group. The main limitations of the study were patients’ difficulty in completing all the tasks at both hospital admission and discharge (e.g., 25% of older patients were unable to complete the arithmetic GVT, and 47% could not complete the TMT-A), and only old patients with relatively good functional capacity at preadmission (i.e., Barthel Index score ≥60 points) were included in the study. Conclusions: An individualized, multicomponent exercise training program may be an effective therapy for improving cognitive function (i.e., executive function and verbal fluency domains) in very old patients during acute hospitalization. These findings support the need for a shift from the traditional (bedrest-based) hospitalization to one that recognizes the important role of maintaining functional capacity and cognitive function in older adults, key components of intrinsic capacity. This study was funded by a Gobierno de Navarra project Resolución grant 2186/2014 and acknowledged with the 'Beca Ortiz de Landazuri' as the best research clinical project in 2014, as well as by a research grant PI17/01814 of the Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad (ISCIII, FEDER)
