Evaluación de la cronología dentaria en grupos wichi, toba y criollos del Gran Chaco (provincia de Formosa)

Se realizó el análisis de la cronología de erupción dentaria como una evaluación de maduración funcional en individuos pertenecientes a comunidades wichí, toba y crillas del Gran Chaco (provincia de Formosa, Argentina). Se tuvieron en cuenta los elementos dentarios presentes en cada hemiarcada izquierda y el orden de erupción. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue examinar el comportamiento de estas variables en la población infantil de ambos sexos de las distintas comunidades. La muestra estuvo integrada por 159 individuos entre 6 y 12 años. La metodología aplicada fue la del conteo de las piezas dentarias individuales. Los datos fueron volcados en una ficha odontológica pertinente. Se analizó comparativamente el orden de erupción en cada muestra investigada. Resultados: a) diferencias de erupción entre los wichí, toba y criollos; b) alteración en el orden de erupción, en el segundo premolar y los segundos molares y c) variación de erupción de las niñas con respecto a los varones. Concluimos que los grupos pertenecientes a la misma zona geográfica, pero con distinto nivel socioeconómico, muestran diferencias en la cronología dentaria, lo cual estaría indicando una influencia ambiental sobre el determinante genético

Estudio de lesiones óseas alvéolo-dentarias en población extinta de la provincia de Catamarca

Lesiones óseas alvéolo-dentarias son importantes para el estudio de la dieta, nutrición y su relación con la presión ambiental a la que se ven expuestas las poblaciones. En este trabajo se realizó un registro de las patologías halladas en distintas colecciones del Museo de La Plata (UNLP) procedente de la Provincia de Catamarca, poblaciones que estuvieron expuestas a importantes factores causantes de estrés nutricional y social. De la muestra integrada por 43 piezas, se seleccionaron 15 cranium y 10 calvarium que fueron registrados por edad, sexo, dentición, maxilar y grupo dentario.Facultad de Odontologí

Intraoperative adenosine for pheochromocytoma with myocardial infarction and SARS-CoV-2: case report

The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the risks and perioperative complexity of the patients undergoing pheochromocytoma-associated adrenalectomy. This article discusses the use of adenosine for the management of hypertensive crisis during this intervention, as well as the need to individualize the suitable timing for surgery after recent COVID-19 infection. Case presentation: This article discusses the case of a patient with a finding of right adrenal incidentaloma; further studies determined a metanephrines secreting pheochromocytoma. Following hospital admission for preoperative optimization, the eve of the procedure the patient developed an acute myocardial infarction and subsequently SARS-CoV-2 symptomatic infection. Intraoperatively, hypertensive peaks were managed with continuous adenosine perfusion. The patient was discharged after 48 hours. Conclusions: Preoperative optimization positively influences the intraoperative management of patients with pheochromocytoma. The intraoperative use of adenosine allows for adequate and safe control of hypertensive crises. Each situation must be individualized in patients pending surgery, with a recent COVID-19 infection

Zika virus pathogenesis in rhesus macaques is unaffected by pre-existing immunity to dengue virus

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a re-emerging virus that has recently spread into dengue virus (DENV) endemic regions and cross-reactive antibodies (Abs) could potentially affect ZIKV pathogenesis. Using DENV-immune serum, it has been shown in vitro that antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE) of ZIKV infection can occur. Here we study the effects of pre-existing DENV immunity on ZIKV infection in vivo. We infect two cohorts of rhesus macaques with ZIKV; one cohort has been exposed to DENV 2.8 years earlier and a second control cohort is naïve to flaviviral infection. Our results, while confirming ADE in vitro, suggest that pre-existing DENV immunity does not result in more severe ZIKV disease. Rather our results show a reduction in the number of days of ZIKV viremia compared to naïve macaques and that the previous exposure to DENV may result in modulation of the immune response without resulting in enhancement of ZIKV pathogenesis

Seroepidemiology of Toxoplasma gondii infection in psychiatric inpatients in a northern Mexican city

BACKGROUND: Patients with psychiatric disorders were found to show a high seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection. There is scarce information about the epidemiology of T. gondii infection in psychiatric patients in Mexico. Therefore, we sought to determine the prevalence of T. gondii infection and associated socio-demographic, clinical and behavioural characteristics in a population of psychiatric patients in Durango City, Mexico. Seroprevalence in patients was compared with that obtained in a control population. METHODS: One hundred and thirty seven inpatients of a public psychiatric hospital and 180 controls were examined for the presence of IgG and IgM antibodies against T. gondii by enzyme-linked immunoassay (Diagnostic Automation Inc., Calabasas, CA, USA). The control population consisted of blood donors of a public blood bank and elderly persons attending a senior center in the same city. Age in controls (42 years +/- 20.2) was comparable with that of the psychiatric patients (43.7 years +/-13.8) (p = 0.42). Socio-demographic, clinical and behavioral characteristics from the patients were also obtained. RESULTS: Anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies indicating latent infection with T. gondii was found in 25 (18.2%) of 137 psychiatric inpatients and 16 (8.9%) of 180 controls (p = 0.02). Ten (26.3%) of 38 schizophrenic patients had latent infection and this prevalence was also significantly higher than that observed in controls (p = 0.005). Prevalence of anti-T. gondii IgM antibodies was comparable among patients and controls (4.4% vs 2.2%, respectively, p = 0.22). Multivariate analysis showed that T. gondii infection in inpatients was positively associated with sexual promiscuity (adjusted OR = 15.8; 95% CI: 3.8–64.8), unwashed raw fruit consumption (adjusted OR = 5.19; 95% CI: 2.3–11.3), and a history of surgery (adjusted OR = 6.5; 95% CI: 2.6–16), and negatively associated with lamb meat consumption (adjusted OR = 0.26; 95% CI: 0.10–0.63). CONCLUSION: In the present study, psychiatric inpatients in Durango, Mexico, in general and schizophrenia inpatients in particular had a significantly higher prevalence of T. gondii infection than the control group. Results suggest that unwashed raw fruit consumption might be the most important route of T. gondii transmission in our psychiatric inpatients while lamb meat consumption the less important. Additional studies will have to elucidate the causative relation between infection with T. gondii and psychiatric disorders
