    Agreement among Mediterranean diet pattern adherence indexes : MCC-Spain study

    There are many different methods used to measure the degree of adherence to a Mediterranean diet (MD), limiting comparison and interpretation of their results. The concordance between different methodologies has been questioned and their evaluation recommended. The aim of this study was to evaluate the agreement among five indexes that measure adherence to a Mediterranean dietary pattern. The study population included healthy adults selected in the Multi-Case Control Spain (MCC-Spain) study recruited in 12 provinces. A total of 3640 controls were matched to cases by age and sex. To reach the aim, the following scores of adherence to a Mediterranean dietary pattern were calculated: Mediterranean diet score (MDS), alternative Mediterranean diet (aMED), relative Mediterranean diet (rMED), dietary score (DS) and literature-based adherence score (LBAS). The relative frequency of subjects with a high level of adherence to a MD varied from 22% (aMED index) to 37.2% (DS index). Similarly, a high variability was observed for the prevalence of a low level of MD: from 24% (rMED) to 38.4% (aMED). The correlation among MDS, aMED and rMED indexes was moderate, except for MDS and aMED with a high coefficient of correlation 0.75 (95% CI 0.74–0.77). The Cohen’s Kappa coefficient among indexes showed a moderate–fair concordance, except for MDS and aMED with a 0.56 (95% CI 0.55–0.59) and 0.67 (95% CI 0.66–0.68) using linear and quadratic weighting, respectively. The existing MD adherence indexes measured the same, although they were based on different constructing algorithms and varied in the food groups included, leading to a different classification of subjects.     Technical characterization of sintered glass-ceramics derived from glass fibers recovered by pyrolysis

    Sintered wollastonite-plagioclase glass-ceramics were prepared through crystallization of a parent glass generated by vitrification of pyrolysis residual glass fibers that had been pyrolytically recovered from waste composite materials. A vitrifiable mixture consisting of 95 wt.% glass fiber and 5 wt.% Na2O was melted at 1450ºC to obtain a glass frit. The glass-ceramic materials were produced by a sinter-crystallization process from the powdered glass frit. The effect of firing temperature on the properties of sintered glass-ceramics was investigated. The sintering behaviour of glass-ceramic tiles was evaluated by means of water absorption, apparent porosity and bulk density. In addition, the mineralogical and microstructural characterization of these tiles was carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results from experiments such as water absorption, bending strength, chemical resistance and stain resistance have shown that the developed glass-ceramic materials possess technological properties very suitable for architectural applications.Dr. M.I.     Uso problemático de internet en estudiantes universitarios : factores asociados y diferencias de género

    El objetivo del presente trabajo es realizar un análisis descriptivo del uso problemático de Internet en estudiantes universitarios, evaluando la posible asociación con problemas de salud y conductas adictivas, así como diferencias de género en los tipos utilización. Un total de 2780 alumnos participaron en el estudio entre los años 2011 – 2014, siendo un 29% varones (edad 20.8 ± 5.1 años) y un 71% mujeres (edad de 20.3 ± 4.4 años). La prevalencia de uso problemático de Internet evaluada mediante el Internet Addiction Test fue del 6.08%. Ser menor de 21 años y cursar titulaciones diferentes a ciencias de la salud fueron factores asociados a una mayor frecuencia de este problema, no existiendo diferencias en función del sexo o tipo de domicilio. Los resultados muestran una asociación significativa con algunos problemas de salud (migrañas, dolor lumbar, sobrepeso u obesidad, descanso insuficiente), aspectos psicológicos (riesgo de trastornos de la conducta alimentaria, riesgo de trastorno mental, depresión), problemas familiares y discriminación; no encontrándose asociaciones con consumo de sustancias adictivas (alcohol, tabaco o cannabis). Respecto al tiempo de uso de Internet, las horas de conexión semanales fueron significativamente mayores en las mujeres que en los hombres, tanto en el tiempo total como por motivos de ocio. El análisis del perfil de utilización en usuarios problemáticos reveló que los varones se relacionan más con aspectos de ocio como los juegos o las compras online y las mujeres con aspectos de socialización, como el chat o las redes sociales.The aim of this paper is to make a descriptive analysis of Problematic Internet Use in college students, evaluating the possible association with health problems and addictive behaviors, as well as gender differences in user types. A total of 2,780 students participated in the study between 2011 and 2014, 29% of them being males (age 20.8 ± 5.1 years) and 71% females (age 20.3 ± 4.4 years). The prevalence of Problematic Internet Use (PIU) assessed by the Internet Addiction Test was 6.08%. Being under 21 years of age and studying for degrees in subjects other than the health sciences were associated factors with a higher frequency of this problem, no differences by gender or type of address were found. The results show a significant association with some health problems (migraines, back pain, excess weight or obesity, insufficient rest), psychological aspects (risk of eating disorders, risk of mental disorder, depression), family problems and discrimination; with no associations with substance use (alcohol, cannabis or tobacco) being found. Concerning the time of Internet use, weekly hours were significantly higher in women than in men, both the total time as for leisure. The analysis of the profile use in problematic users revealed that males are related to aspects of entertainment such as games or shopping online and females are related to aspects of socialization, such as chats and social networks

    Consumo de alimentos y calidad de la dieta en estudiantes universitarios: Proyecto uniHcos

    Antecedentes/Objetivos: La etapa universitaria se caracteriza por cambios en estilos de vida y, la alimentación es uno de los de mayor variación, especialmente en los primeros cursos. El objetivo de este estudio es describir la frecuencia de consumo de alimentos y la calidad de la dieta de los universitarios españoles. Métodos: Estudio observacional, descriptivo, transversal, multicéntrico de estudiantes universitarios de primer año participantes en el proyecto uniHcos. Población de 1363 estudiantes, 72,6% mujeres y 27,4% hombres de 6 universidades españolas. Los participantes respondieron un cuestionario online de frecuencia de consumo de alimentos: A diario; 3-4 veces/semana pero no diario; 1-2 veces/semana; < 1 vez/semana; Nunca/casi-nunca. Para interpretar los resultados los alimentos se categorizaron según guías-dietéticas SENC-2004 en consumo: diario (pasta, pan-cereales, fruta, verduras, lácteos); semanal (carnes, huevos, pescado, legumbres) y ocasional (embutidos, dulces, refrescos con azúcar. A partir de estos datos se calculó el Índice de Alimentación Saludable (IASE) para determinar la calidad de la dieta. Se clasificó en saludable, necesita cambios y poco saludable. Se realizaron estadísticos descriptivos mediante el software estadístico SPSS 20.0. Resultados: El 38,1% de los universitarios consumen frutas a diario, 21,4% verduras, 74,5% lácteos, 60% pan-cereales y 15% pasta. Semanalmente, el 55,3% consumen carne 3-4 veces/semana, 20,7% huevos, 22,2% pescado y 25,5% legumbres. Además, el 13,3%, 22,2% y 10,2% de los universitarios declaran consumir a diario embutido, dulces y refrescos con azúcar respectivamente. Estos resultados van en concomitancia con los del IASE estadísticamente significativos (p-valor < 0,001), donde se muestra que 6,5% de los universitarios se alimentan saludablemente (mujer: 6,9%; hombre: 5,3%), frente a 78% que necesitan cambios (mujer: 76,7%; hombre: 81,3%) y 15,6% que presentan una alimentación poco saludable, siendo mayor en mujeres (16,4%) que en hombres (13,4%). Conclusiones: La alimentación de los universitarios españoles sigue siendo poco saludable y necesitando cambios, como muestran otros estudios en población universitaria. Los patrones alimentarios de consumo semanal de embutidos, dulces, como el de frutas, verduras y pasta, muestra una inversión de la alimentación saludable y, por tanto un problema de salud pública que requiere de atención por ser población que inicia su camino universitario.Plan Nacional Sobre Drogas (2010I145)

    Advances in seismic monitoring at Deception Island volcano (Antarctica) since the International Polar Year

    Deception Island is an active volcano located in the south Shetland Islands, Antarctica. It constitutes a natural laboratory to test geophysical instruments in extreme conditions, since they have to endure not only the Antarctic climate but also the volcanic environment. Deception is one of the most visited places in Antarctica, both by scientists and tourists, which emphasize the importance of volcano monitoring. Seismic monitoring has been going on since 1986 during austral summer surveys. The recorded data include volcano-tectonic earthquakes, long-period events and volcanic tremor, among others. The level of seismicity ranges from quiet periods to seismic crises (e.g. 1992-1993, 1999). Our group has been involved in volcano monitoring at Deception Island since 1994. Based on this experience, in recent years we have made the most of the opportunities of the International Polar Year 2007-2008 to introduce advances in seismic monitoring along four lines: (1) the improvement of the seismic network installed for seismic monitoring during the summer surveys; (2) the development and improvement of seismic arrays for the detection and characterization of seismo-volcanic signals; (3) the design of automated event recognition tools, to simplify the process of data interpretation; and (4) the deployment of permanent seismic stations.     Patterns of alcohol consumption and use of health services in spanish university students: UniHcos Project

    The aim of the study was to examine the association of alcohol consumption patterns (hazardous alcohol use and binge drinking) and the use of emergency services and primary care consultations in university students. An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted at eleven Spanish universities collaborating within the uniHcos Project. University students completed an online questionnaire that assessed hazardous alcohol use and binge drinking using the AUDIT questionnaire and evaluated the use of emergency services and primary care. A descriptive analysis of the data was performed, as well as the chi-squared test and Student's t-test and nonconditional logistic regression models to examine this association. Results: There were 10,167 participants who completed the questionnaire. The prevalence of hazardous alcohol use was 16.9% (95% CI: 16.2?17.6), while the prevalence of binge drinking was 48.8% (95% CI: 47.9?49.8). There were significant differences in the use of emergency services in those surveyed with hazardous alcohol use (p < 0.001) or binge drinking pattern (p < 0.001). However, no significant differences were observed in terms of attendance during primary care visits in individuals with hazardous alcohol use (p = 0.367) or binge drinking pattern (p = 0.755). The current study shows the association between university students with a pattern of hazardous alcohol use or binge drinking and greater use of emergency services. However, no significant association was observed between the said consumption patterns and the use of primary care services
