Extreme AO Observations of Two Triple Asteroid Systems with SPHERE
We present the discovery of a new satellite of asteroid (130) Elektra -
S/2014 (130) 1 - in differential imaging and in integral field spectroscopy
data over multiple epochs obtained with SPHERE/VLT. This new (second) moonlet
of Elektra is about 2 km across, on an eccentric orbit and about 500 km away
from the primary. For a comparative study, we also observed another triple
asteroid system (93) Minerva. For both systems, component-resolved reflectance
spectra of the satellites and primary were obtained simultaneously. No
significant spectral difference was observed between the satellites and the
primary for either triple system. We find that the moonlets in both systems are
more likely to have been created by sub-disruptive impacts as opposed to having

Détection de nouvelles candidates au rang de naines brunes de types spectraux plus tardifs que T5 avec le Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE)
Les naines brunes sont, en termes de masse, les objets astrophysiques intermédiaires entre les planètes géantes gazeuses et les étoiles de faible masse. Elles se forment de la même manière que les étoiles, par contraction gravitationnelle d’un fragment de nuage de gaz moléculaire ayant atteint la limite de Jeans, mais se différencient par leur incapa- cité à produire les réactions de fusion de l’hydrogène dans leur cœur. Les naines brunes sont par conséquent des objets qui se refroidissent graduellement, et dont les propriétés spectrales évoluent au cours du temps.
Ce mémoire présente la recherche de nouvelles candidates de type spectral T tardif et Y, dans le but de compléter le relevé des naines brunes du voisinage solaire. Cette recherche est motivée par deux objectifs principaux. Premièrement, un échantillon com- plet des objets de faible masse est nécessaire pour contraindre correctement la limite aux faibles masses de la fonction de masse initiale des nuages interstellaires, problème clé en astrophysique actuellement. Deuxièmement, les naines brunes de types spectraux tardifs sont les objets stellaires dont les propriétés atmosphériques sont les plus semblables à celles des planètes géantes gazeuses. Par conséquent, la recherche de nouvelles naines brunes permet indirectement d’améliorer nos connaissances des exoplanètes, sans être contraints par la proximité d’étoiles brillantes.
À partir du WISE All-Sky Source Catalog, nous avons établi un échantillon de 55 candidates naines brunes répondant aux critères photométriques attendus. Parmi ces can- didates, 17 ont fait l’objet d’un suivi photométrique en bande J à l’Observatoire du Mont-Mégantic, et 9 ont pu être détectées. De ces 9 détections, 4 objets présentent des mouvements propres cohérents avec ceux de naines brunes.In terms of mass, brown dwarfs are the objects that bridge the gap between giant gaseous planets and low-mass stars. They form in the same way as stars, by gravita- tional collapse of a molecular cloud fragment that reached the Jeans limit, but differ by their inability to produce hydrogen nuclear fusion in their core. As a consequence, brown dwarfs are objects gradually cooling, and their spectral properties evolve over time.
This thesis presents the search for new late T and Y dwarf candidates, in order to complete the sample of known brown dwarfs in the solar vicinity. This pursues two main objectives. First, a complete sample of low-mass objects will allow to better con- strain the low-mass edge of the initial mass function of interstellar clouds, currently one of the key problems in astrophysics. Second, late-type brown dwarfs are the stellar ob- jects that have spectral properties most similar to those of giant gaseous planets. As a consequence, the search for new brown dwarfs also aims to increase our knowledge on exoplanets, without being hindered by the glare of a host star.
From the WISE All-Sky Source Catalog, we established a sample of 55 brown dwarf candidates having the expected photometric properties. We have been performing a J band follow-up of 17 of these candidates at the Observatoire du Mont-Mégantic, and we detected 9 of them. 4 of these 9 detections present a proper motion that is consistent with those of brown dwarfs
Compositional characterisation of the Themis family
Context. It has recently been proposed that the surface composition of icy
main-belt asteroids (B-,C-,Cb-,Cg-,P-,and D-types) may be consistent with that
of chondritic porous interplanetary dust particles (CPIDPs). Aims. In the light
of this new association, we re-examine the surface composition of a sample of
asteroids belonging to the Themis family in order to place new constraints on
the formation and evolution of its parent body. Methods. We acquired NIR
spectral data for 15 members of the Themis family and complemented this dataset
with existing spectra in the visible and mid-infrared ranges to perform a
thorough analysis of the composition of the family. Assuming end-member
minerals and particle sizes (<2\mum) similar to those found in CPIDPs, we used
a radiative transfer code adapted for light scattering by small particles to
model the spectral properties of these asteroids. Results. Our best-matching
models indicate that most objects in our sample possess a surface composition
that is consistent with the composition of CP IDPs.We find ultra-fine grained
Fe-bearing olivine glasses to be among the dominant constituents. We further
detect the presence of minor fractions of Mg-rich crystalline silicates. The
few unsuccessfully matched asteroids may indicate the presence of interlopers
in the family or objects sampling a distinct compositional layer of the parent
body. Conclusions. The composition inferred for the Themis family members
suggests that the parent body accreted from a mixture of ice and anhydrous
silicates (mainly amorphous) and subsequently underwent limited heating. By
comparison with existing thermal models that assume a 400km diameter
progenitor, the accretion process of the Themis parent body must have occurred
relatively late (>4Myr after CAIs) so that only moderate internal heating
occurred in its interior, preventing aqueous alteration of the outer shell.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&
TRIPPy: Trailed Image Photometry in Python
Photometry of moving sources typically suffers from reduced signal-to-noise
(SNR) or flux measurements biased to incorrect low values through the use of
circular apertures. To address this issue we present the software package,
TRIPPy: TRailed Image Photometry in Python. TRIPPy introduces the pill
aperture, which is the natural extension of the circular aperture appropriate
for linearly trailed sources. The pill shape is a rectangle with two
semicircular end-caps, and is described by three parameters, the trail length
and angle, and the radius. The TRIPPy software package also includes a new
technique to generate accurate model point-spread functions (PSF) and trailed
point-spread functions (TSF) from stationary background sources in sidereally
tracked images. The TSF is merely the convolution of the model PSF, which
consists of a moffat profile, and super sampled lookup table. From the TSF,
accurate pill aperture corrections can be estimated as a function of pill
radius with a accuracy of 10 millimags for highly trailed sources. Analogous to
the use of small circular apertures and associated aperture corrections, small
radius pill apertures can be used to preserve signal-to-noise of low flux
sources, with appropriate aperture correction applied to provide an accurate,

Col-OSSOS: Colors of the Interstellar Planetesimal 1I/`Oumuamua
The recent discovery by Pan-STARRS1 of 1I/2017 U1 (`Oumuamua), on an unbound
and hyperbolic orbit, offers a rare opportunity to explore the planetary
formation processes of other stars, and the effect of the interstellar
environment on a planetesimal surface. 1I/`Oumuamua's close encounter with the
inner Solar System in 2017 October was a unique chance to make observations
matching those used to characterize the small-body populations of our own Solar
System. We present near-simultaneous g, r, and J photometry
and colors of 1I/`Oumuamua from the 8.1-m Frederick C. Gillett Gemini North
Telescope, and photometry from the 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope. Our
grJ observations are directly comparable to those from the
high-precision Colours of the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (Col-OSSOS),
which offer unique diagnostic information for distinguishing between outer
Solar System surfaces. The J-band data also provide the highest signal-to-noise
measurements made of 1I/`Oumuamua in the near-infrared. Substantial, correlated
near-infrared and optical variability is present, with the same trend in both
near-infrared and optical. Our observations are consistent with 1I/`Oumuamua
rotating with a double-peaked period of hours and being a
highly elongated body with an axial ratio of at least 5.3:1, implying that it
has significant internal cohesion. The color of the first interstellar
planetesimal is at the neutral end of the range of Solar System and
solar-reflectance colors: it is like that of some dynamically excited objects
in the Kuiper belt and the less-red Jupiter Trojans.Comment: Accepted to ApJ
High-resolution seismic imaging in deep sea from a joint deep-towed/OBH reflection experiment : application to a Mass Transport Complex offshore Nigeria
International audienceWe assess the feasibility of high-resolution seismic depth imaging in deep water based on a new geophysical approach involving the joint use of a deep-towed seismic device (SYSIF) and ocean bottom hydrophones (OBHs). Source signature measurement enables signature deconvolution to be used to improve the vertical resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. The source signature was also used to precisely determine direct traveltimes that were inverted to relocate source and receiver positions. The very high accuracy of the positioning that was obtained enabled depth imaging and a stack of the OBH data to be performed. The determination of the P-wave velocity distribution was realized by the adaptation of an iterative focusing approach to the specific acquisition geometry. This innovative experiment combined with advanced processing succeeded in reaching lateral and vertical resolution (2.5 and 1 m) in accordance with the objectives of imaging fine scale structures and correlation with in situ measurements. To illustrate the technological and processing advances of the approach, we present a first application performed during the ERIG3D cruise offshore Nigeria with the seismic data acquired over NG1, a buried Mass Transport Complex (MTC) interpreted as a debris flow by conventional data. Evidence for a slide nature of a part of the MTC was provided by the high resolution of the OBH depth images. Rigid behaviour may be inferred from movement of coherent material inside the MTC and thrust structures at the base of the MTC. Furthermore, a silt layer that was disrupted during emplacement but has maintained its stratigraphic position supports a short transport distance
Col-OSSOS: The Colours of the Outer Solar System Origins Survey
The Colours of the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (Col-OSSOS) is acquiring
near-simultaneous , , and photometry of unprecedented precision with
the Gemini North Telescope, targeting nearly a hundred trans-Neptunian objects
(TNOs) brighter than mag discovered in the Outer Solar System
Origins Survey. Combining the optical and near-infrared photometry with the
well-characterized detection efficiency of the Col-OSSOS target sample will
provide the first flux-limited compositional dynamical map of the outer Solar
System. In this paper, we describe our observing strategy and detail the data
reduction processes we employ, including techniques to mitigate the impact of
rotational variability. We present optical and near-infrared colors for 35
TNOs. We find two taxonomic groups for the dynamically excited TNOs, the
neutral and red classes, which divide at . Based on simple
albedo and orbital distribution assumptions, we find that the neutral class
outnumbers the red class, with a ratio of 4:1 and potentially as high as 11:1.
Including in our analysis constraints from the cold classical objects, which
are known to exhibit unique albedos and colors, we find that within our
measurement uncertainty, our observations are consistent with the primordial
Solar System protoplanetesimal disk being neutral-class-dominated, with two

Morphobathymetry of Small-Scale Mud Reliefs on the Adriatic Shelf
Abstract Morpho-bathymetric and stratigraphic data reveal small-scale mud reliefs in the toe region of the late-Holocene mud wedge on the Adriatic shelf. The reliefs are elongate features with acoustically-transparent cores. They are present in two geologic settings: seaward of shore-parallel undulations within a thick mud wedge and seaward of basement highs where the mud wedge is thin. In both settings, the reliefs define clusters sub-perpendicular to the regional contours, possibly indicating an origin related to escape of fluids from an impregnated unit at the base of the late-Holocene wedge. Shore-parallel bottom-hugging currents appear to modify the reliefs following their episodic growth
