Enigmatic Red Beds Exposed at Point of Rocks, Cimarron National Grassland, Morton County, Kansas: Chronostratigraphic Constraints from Uranium-Lead Dating of Detrital Zircons
Point of Rocks, a high-relief bluff overlooking the Cimarron River valley in Morton County, Kansas, is capped by distinct white beds of Neogene Ogallala Formation calcrete that overlie red beds of shale, siltstone, and sandstone. These unfossiliferous red beds are currently assigned to the Jurassic System; however, their age has long been debated due to a lack of marker beds, index fossils, and nearby correlative outcrops. As a result, geologists over the years have assigned the rocks to systems ranging from the Permian to the Cretaceous. In this study, four stratigraphic sections were measured in the red beds and three bulk samples were collected to determine the uranium-lead age distributions of detrital zircon (DZ) populations. Red-bed strata composed of fissile shale and sandstone are interpreted as alluvial overbank deposits, while dominantly trough cross-bedded and planar-laminated sandstones are interpreted as tidally influenced fluvial deposits. Detrital zircon age peaks can be grouped into at least seven subpopulations with a youngest single zircon age of 263.8 ± 12.1 Ma, a more conservative age of 293.0 ± 6.95 Ma based on the youngest grouping of three grain ages overlapping at 2σ, and a complete absence of Mesozoic age zircons. In addition, copper oxides along partings and fractures suggest that the red beds once hosted copper sulfides, a common constituent of regional Permian-Triassic red beds. The DZ data--in conjunction with the identification of the Permian Day Creek Dolomite marker bed in logs of nearby drilling tests--strongly suggest that the enigmatic red beds cropping out at the base of Point of Rocks should be assigned to the Guadalupian Big Basin Formation, the uppermost Permian unit in Kansas
An Ultra-High Stability, Low-Noise Laser Current Driver with Digital Control
We present a low-noise, high modulation-bandwidth design for a laser current
driver with excellent long term stability. The driver improves upon the
commonly-used Hall-Libbrecht design. The current driver can be operated
remotely by way of a micro-processing unit, which controls the current set
point digitally. This allows precise repeatability and improved accuracy and
stability. It also allows the driver to be placed near the laser for reduced
noise and for lower phase lag when using the modulation input. We present the
theory of operation for our driver in detail, and give a thorough
characterization of its stability, noise, set point accuracy and repeatability,

Text messaging and brief phone calls for weight loss in overweight and obese English- and Spanish-speaking adults: A 1-year, parallel-group, randomized controlled trial.
BACKGROUND:Weight loss interventions based solely on text messaging (short message service [SMS]) have been shown to be modestly effective for short periods of time and in some populations, but limited evidence is available for positive longer-term outcomes and for efficacy in Hispanic populations. Also, little is known about the comparative efficacy of weight loss interventions that use SMS coupled with brief, technology-mediated contact with health coaches, an important issue when considering the scalability and cost of interventions. We examined the efficacy of a 1-year intervention designed to reduce weight among overweight and obese English- and Spanish-speaking adults via SMS alone (ConTxt) or in combination with brief, monthly health-coaching calls. ConTxt offered 2-4 SMS/day that were personalized, tailored, and interactive. Content was theory- and evidence-based and focused on reducing energy intake and increasing energy expenditure. Monthly health-coaching calls (5-10 minutes' duration) focused on goal-setting, identifying barriers to achieving goals, and self-monitoring. METHODS AND FINDINGS:English- and Spanish-speaking adults were recruited from October 2011 to March 2013. A total of 298 overweight (body mass index [BMI] 27.0 to 39.9 kg/m2) adults (aged 21-60 years; 77% female; 41% Hispanic; 21% primarily Spanish speaking; 44% college graduates or higher; 22% unemployed) were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive either ConTxt only (n = 101), ConTxt plus health-coaching calls (n = 96), or standard print materials on weight reduction (control group, n = 101). We used computer-based permuted-block randomization with block sizes of three or six, stratified by sex and Spanish-speaking status. Participants, study staff, and investigators were masked until the intervention was assigned. The primary outcome was objectively measured percent of weight loss from baseline at 12 months. Differences between groups were evaluated using linear mixed-effects regression within an intention-to-treat framework. A total of 261 (87.2%) and 253 (84.9%) participants completed 6- and 12-month visits, respectively. Loss to follow-up did not differ by study group. Mean (95% confidence intervals [CIs]) percent weight loss at 12 months was -0.61 (-1.99 to 0.77) in the control group, -1.68 (-3.08 to -0.27) in ConTxt only, and -3.63 (-5.05 to -2.81) in ConTxt plus health-coaching calls. At 12 months, mean (95% CI) percent weight loss, adjusted for baseline BMI, was significantly different between ConTxt plus health-coaching calls and the control group (-3.0 [-4.99 to -1.04], p = 0.003) but not between the ConTxt-only and the control group (-1.07 [-3.05 to 0.92], p = 0.291). Differences between ConTxt plus health-coaching calls and ConTxt only were not significant (-1.95 [-3.96 to 0.06], p = 0.057). These findings were consistent across other weight-related secondary outcomes, including changes in absolute weight, BMI, and percent body fat at 12 months. Exploratory subgroup analyses suggested that Spanish speakers responded more favorably to ConTxt plus health-coaching calls than English speakers (Spanish contrast: -7.90 [-11.94 to -3.86], p < 0.001; English contrast: -1.82 [-4.03 to 0.39], p = 0.107). Limitations include the unblinded delivery of the intervention and recruitment of a predominantly female sample from a single site. CONCLUSIONS:A 1-year intervention that delivered theory- and evidence-based weight loss content via daily personalized, tailored, and interactive SMS was most effective when combined with brief, monthly phone calls. Combining Action Observation and Motor Imagery Improves Eye–Hand Coordination during Novel Visuomotor Task Performance
In this study, we compared the effectiveness of concurrent action observation and motor imagery (AO + MI), observing with the intent to imitate (active observation; AO), and passive observation (PO) training interventions for improving eye–hand coordination. Fifty participants were assigned to five groups [AO + MI, AO, PO, physical practice (PP); control] and performed a visuomotor rotation task, whilst eye movements were recorded. Each participant then performed 20 task trials in a training intervention before repeating the visuomotor rotation task in a post-test. As expected, PP produced the greatest improvement in task performance and eye–hand coordination. However, in comparison to the control group, AO + MI training produced a statistically significant increase in both task performance and eye–hand coordination, but no such improvements were found following AO or PO
Multiwavelength Monitoring of the BL Lacertae Object PKS 2155-304 in May 1994. II. The IUE Campaign
PKS 2155-304, the brightest BL Lac object in the ultraviolet sky, was
monitored with the IUE satellite at ~1 hour time-resolution for ten nearly
uninterrupted days in May 1994. The campaign, which was coordinated with EUVE,
ROSAT, and ASCA monitoring, along with optical and radio observations from the
ground, yielded the largest set of spectra and the richest short time scale
variability information ever gathered for a blazar at UV wavelengths. The
source flared dramatically during the first day, with an increase by a factor
~2.2 in an hour and a half. In subsequent days, the flux maintained a nearly
constant level for ~5 days, then flared with ~35% amplitude for two days. The
same variability was seen in both short- and long-wavelength IUE light curves,
with zero formal lag (~<2 hr), except during the rapid initial flare, when the
variations were not resolved. Spectral index variations were small and not
clearly correlated with flux. The flux variability observed in the present
monitoring is so rapid that for the first time, based on the UV emission alone,
the traditional Delta L/Delta t limit indicating relativistic beaming is
exceeded. The most rapid variations, under the likely assumption of synchrotron
radiation, lead to a lower limit of 1 G on the magnetic field strength in the
UV emitting region. These results are compared with earlier intensive
monitoring of PKS 2155-304 with IUE in November 1991, when the UV flux

A scoping review of the application of motor learning principles to optimize myoelectric prosthetic hand control.
Although prosthetic hand rejection rates remain high, evidence suggests that effective training plays a major role in device acceptance. Receiving training early in the rehabilitation process also enhances functional prosthetic use, decreases the likelihood of developing an overreliance on the intact limb, and reduces amputation-related pain. Despite these obvious benefits, there is a current lack of evidence regarding the most effective training techniques to facilitate myoelectric prosthetic hand control, and it remains unknown whether training is effective in facilitating the acquisition and transfer of prosthetic skill. In this scoping review, we introduced and summarized key motor learning principles related to attentional focus, implicit motor learning, training eye-hand coordination, practice variability, motor imagery, and action observation, and virtual training and biofeedback. We then reviewed the existing literature that has applied these principles for training prosthetic hand control before outlining future avenues for further research. The importance of optimizing early and appropriate training cannot be overlooked. While the intuition and experience of clinicians holds enormous value, evidence-based guidelines based on well-established motor learning principles will also be crucial for training effective prosthetic hand control. While it is clear that more research is needed to form the basis of such guidelines, it is hoped that this review highlights the potential avenues for this work
Imagine That! Mental Training for Children With Developmental Coordination Disorder
Movement is important for children’s health and well-being. Most children find it easy to learn to move but children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) find it hard. It can be tricky for them to plan and control their movements. DCD affects 1 in every 20 children. It makes important tasks difficult, like getting dressed or playing games and sports. Scientists have found that children with DCD have different activity in some brain areas compared to other children. Mental training can increase activity in these areas of the brain. One type of mental training is motor imagery, which involves imagining doing movements. Another type of mental training is action observation, which involves carefully watching how people make certain movements. These techniques can help children with DCD get better at moving. This means that doing mental training might help make life easier for children with DCD
The dark energy spectrometer - A potential multi-fiber instrument for the Blanco 4-meter telescope
We describe the preliminary design of the Dark Energy Spectrometer (DESpec), a fiber-fed spectroscopic instrument concept for the Blanco 4-meter telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO). DESpec would take advantage of the infrastructure recently deployed for the Dark Energy Camera (DECam). DESpec would be mounted in the new DECam prime focus cage, would be interchangeable with DECam, would share the DECam optical corrector, and would feature a focal plane with ∼4000 robotically positioned optical fibers feeding multiple high-throughput spectrometers. The instrument would have a field of view of 3.8 square degrees, a wavelength range of approximately 500<λ<1000 nm, and a spectral resolution of R∼3000. DESpec would provide a powerful spectroscopic follow-up system for sources in the Southern hemisphere discovered by the Dark Energy Survey and LSST
Monoclonal anti-β1-adrenergic receptor antibodies activate G protein signaling in the absence of β-arrestin recruitment
Thermostabilized G protein-coupled receptors used as antigens for in vivo immunization have resulted in the generation of functional agonistic anti-β1-adrenergic (β1AR) receptor monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). The focus of this study was to examine the pharmacology of these antibodies to evaluate their mechanistic activity at β1AR. Immunization with the β1AR stabilized receptor yielded five stable hybridoma clones, four of which expressed functional IgG, as determined in cell-based assays used to evaluate cAMP stimulation. The antibodies bind diverse epitopes associated with low nanomolar agonist activity at β1AR, and they appeared to show some degree of biased signaling as they were inactive in an assay measuring signaling through β-arrestin. In vitro characterization also verified different antibody-receptor interactions reflecting the different epitopes on the extracellular surface of β1AR to which the mAbs bind. The anti-β1AR mAbs only demonstrated agonist activity when in dimeric antibody format, but not as the monomeric Fab format, suggesting that agonist activation may be mediated through promoting receptor dimerization. Finally, we have also shown that at least one of these antibodies exhibits in vivo functional activity at a therapeutically-relevant dose producing an increase in heart rate consistent with β1AR agonism
