    A Proposal to Detect Dark Matter Using Axionic Topological Antiferromagnets

    Antiferromagnetically doped topological insulators (A-TI) are among the candidates to host dynamical axion fields and axion-polaritons; weakly interacting quasiparticles that are analogous to the dark axion, a long sought after candidate dark matter particle. Here we demonstrate that using the axion quasiparticle antiferromagnetic resonance in A-TI's in conjunction with low-noise methods of detecting THz photons presents a viable route to detect axion dark matter with mass 0.7 to 3.5 meV, a range currently inaccessible to other dark matter detection experiments and proposals. The benefits of this method at high frequency are the tunability of the resonance with applied magnetic field, and the use of A-TI samples with volumes much larger than 1 mm3^3.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. v2 accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters.     Arthur Posnansky, the Czar of Tiwanaku Archaeology

    Arthur Posnansky was the illustrious pioneer of Tiwanaku archaeology, remembered as a quixotic, flamboyant, and swashbuckling character. He was a naval officer, a businessman, and a scholar. He dedicated nearly fifty years of his life to the study of the Andean past, which resonates through the history of Bolivian archaeology. While clearly not the field’s father, his commanding presence and outsized legacy could make him the czar of Tiwanaku archaeology. He developed a hyperbolic narrative of Tiwanaku as the ’cradle of American man’ and tirelessly promoted it in Europe and the Americas. Like many pioneers, he was not trained as an archaeologist. His theories were based on little concrete information but he defended them with enviable passion. His ideas were strongly influenced by intellectual trends he lived though and participated in, including racist anthropology. This has led some to dismiss him as a misguided, self-appointed champion of Tiwanaku. However, I suggest that Posnansky’s life and times are very relevant to both understanding popular views and scholarly interpretations of the site

    RADIOCARBON VS. LUMINESCENCE DATING OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL CERAMICS IN THE SOUTHERN ANDES : A REVIEW OF PAIRED DATES, BAYESIAN MODELS, AND A PILOT STUDY

However, luminescence dates have not been rigorously compared to independent dating methods, which this paper's goal. First, we present a compilation of 94 paired 14C and luminescence dates from the southern Andes, which reveals discrepancies across a range of contexts and ages. Second, we compare two Bayesian models of sets of 14C and thermoluminescence (TL) dates from three ceramic styles in the Azapa Valley, Chile, and the Inca occupation of Mendoza, Argentina. We find that only the 14C models produce results that agree with expectations based on independent data. Third, we present results from a pilot study in Mendoza that dated 6 sherds with 3 luminescence methods each and closely associated 14C dates. The reasons for disagreement between methods remain unclear, but Andean sediments with low and unstable luminescence sensitivity seem to be an important factor. Even though some luminescence ages are accurate, the clear trend of inconsistent results leads us to recommend that archaeologists use 14C rather than luminescence dates to build cultural chronologies.Peer reviewe

    The mass of the neutron star in Cyg X-2 (V1341 Cyg)

    Cygnus X-2 is one of the brightest and longest known X-ray sources. We present high resolution optical spectroscopy of Cyg X-2 obtained over 4 years which gives an improved mass function of 0.69 +/- 0.03 Msun (1 sigma error). In addition, we resolve the rotationally broadened absorption features of the secondary star for the first time, deriving a rotation speed of vsin(i) = 34.2 +/- 2.5 km per s (1 sigma error) which leads to a mass ratio of q = M_c/M_x = 0.34 +/- 0.04 (1 sigma error), assuming a tidally-locked and Roche lobe-filling secondary). Hence with the lack of X-ray eclipses (i.e. i <~ 73 degrees) we can set firm 95% confidence lower limits to the neutron star mass of M_x > 1.27 Msun and to the companion star mass of M_c > 0.39 Msun. However, by additionally requiring that the companion must exceed 0.75 Msun (as required theoretically to produce a steady low-mass X-ray binary), then M_x > 1.88 Msun and i < 61 degrees (95% confidence lower and upper limit, respectively), thereby making Cyg X-2 the highest mass neutron star measured to date.     Modeling of Kidney Hemodynamics: Probability-Based Topology of an Arterial Network

    Through regulation of the extracellular fluid volume, the kidneys provide important long-term regulation of blood pressure. At the level of the individual functional unit (the nephron), pressure and flow control involves two different mechanisms that both produce oscillations. The nephrons are arranged in a complex branching structure that delivers blood to each nephron and, at the same time, provides a basis for an interaction between adjacent nephrons. The functional consequences of this interaction are not understood, and at present it is not possible to address this question experimentally. We provide experimental data and a new modeling approach to clarify this problem. To resolve details of microvascular structure, we collected 3D data from more than 150 afferent arterioles in an optically cleared rat kidney. Using these results together with published micro-computed tomography (ÎĽCT) data we develop an algorithm for generating the renal arterial network. We then introduce a mathematical model describing blood flow dynamics and nephron to nephron interaction in the network. The model includes an implementation of electrical signal propagation along a vascular wall. Simulation results show that the renal arterial architecture plays an important role in maintaining adequate pressure levels and the self-sustained dynamics of nephrons

    Circumsporozoite-specific T cell responses in children vaccinated with RTS,S/AS01 E and protection against P falciparum clinical malaria

    Background:RTS,S/AS01E is the lead candidate pre-erythrocytic malaria vaccine. In Phase IIb field trials the safety profile was acceptable and the efficacy was 53% (95%CI 31%&ndash;72%) for protecting children against clinical malaria caused by P. falciparum. We studied CS-specific T cell responses in order to identify correlates of protection.Methods and Findings:We used intracellular cytokine staining (for IL2, IFN&gamma;, and TNF&alpha;), ex-vivo ELISPOTs (IFN&gamma; and IL2) and IFN&gamma; cultured ELISPOT assays to characterize the CS-specific cellular responses in 407 children (5&ndash;17 months of age) in a phase IIb randomized controlled trial of RTS,S/AS01E (NCT00380393). RTS,S/ AS01E vaccinees had higher frequencies of CS-specific CD4+ T cells producing IFN&gamma;, TNF&alpha; or IL2 compared to control vaccinees. In a multivariable analysis TNF&alpha;+ CD4+ T cells were independently associated with a reduced risk for clinical malaria among RTS,S/AS01E vaccinees (HR = 0.64, 95%CI 0.49&ndash;0.86, p = 0.002). There was a non-significant tendency towards reduced risk among control vaccinees (HR = 0.80, 95%CI 0.62&ndash;1.03, p = 0.084), albeit with lower CS-specific T cell frequencies and higher rates of clinical malaria. When data from both RTS,S/AS01E vaccinees and control vaccinees were combined (with adjusting for vaccination group), the HR was 0.74 (95%CI 0.62&ndash;0.89, p = 0.001). After a Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons (n-18), the finding was still significant at p = 0.018. There was no significant correlation between cultured or ex vivo ELISPOT data and protection from clinical malaria. The combination of TNF&alpha;+ CD4+ T cells and anti-CS antibody statistically accounted for the protective effect of vaccination in a Cox regression model.Conclusions:RTS,S/AS01E induces CS-specific Th1 T cell responses in young children living in a malaria endemic area. The combination of anti-CS antibody concentrations titers and CS-specific TNF&alpha;+ CD4+ T cells could account for the level of protection conferred by RTS,S/AS01E. The correlation between CS-specific TNF&alpha;+ CD4+ T cells and protection needs confirmation in other datasets

    A Black Hole in the Superluminal source SAX J1819.3-2525 (V4641 Sgr)

    (shortened) Spectroscopic observations of the fast X-ray transient and superluminal jet source SAX J1819.3-2525 (V4641 Sgr) reveal a best fitting period of P_spect=2.81678 +/- 0.00056 days and a semiamplitude of K_2=211.0 +/- 3.1 km/sec. The optical mass function is f(M)=2.74 +/- 0.12 solar masses. We find a photometric period of P_photo=2.81730 +/- 0.00001 days using a light curve measured from photographic plates. The folded light curve resembles an ellipsoidal light curve with two maxima of roughly equal height and two minima of unequal depth per orbital cycle. The secondary star is a late B-type star which has evolved off the main sequence. Using a moderate resolution spectrum (R=7000) we measure T_eff=10500 +/- 200K, log(g)=3.5 +/- 0.1, and V_rot*sin(i)=123 +/- 4 km/sec (1 sigma errors). Assuming synchronous rotation, our measured value of the projected rotational velocity implies a mass ratio of Q=M_1/M_2=1.50 +/- 0.08 (1sigma). The lack of X-ray eclipses implies an upper limit to the inclination of i<70.7 deg. On the other hand, the large amplitude of the folded light curve (about 0.5 mag) implies a large inclination (i>60 deg). Using the above mass function, mass ratio, and inclination range, the mass of the compact object is in the range 8.73 < M_1 < 11.70 solar masses and the mass of the secondary star is in the range 5.49 < M_2 < 8.14 solar masses (90% confidence). The mass of the compact object is well above the maximum mass of a stable neutron star and we conclude that V4641 Sgr contains a black hole.Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, emulateapj5.sty, submitted to Ap

    The center cannot hold: A Bayesian chronology for the collapse of Tiwanaku.

    The timing of Tiwanaku's collapse remains contested. Here we present a generational-scale chronology of Tiwanaku using Bayesian models of 102 radiocarbon dates, including 45 unpublished dates. This chronology tracks four community practices: residing short- vs. long-term, constructing monuments, discarding decorated ceramics, and leaving human burials. Tiwanaku was founded around AD 100 and around AD 600, it became the region's principal destination for migrants. It grew into one of the Andes' first cities and became famous for its decorated ceramics, carved monoliths, and large monuments. Our Bayesian models show that monument building ended ~AD 720 (the median of the ending boundary). Around ~AD 910, burials in tombs ceased as violent deaths began, which we document for the first time in this paper. Ritualized murders are limited to the century leading up to ~AD 1020. Our clearest proxy for social networks breaking down is a precise estimate for the end of permanent residence, ~AD 1010 (970-1050, 95%). This major inflection point was followed by visitors who used the same ceramics until ~AD 1040. Temporary camps lasted until roughly ~AD 1050. These four events suggest a rapid, city-wide collapse at ~AD 1010-1050, lasting just ~20 years (0-70 years, 95%). These results suggest a cascading breakdown of community practices and social networks that were physically anchored at Tiwanaku, though visitors continued to leave informal burials for centuries. This generation-scale chronology suggests that collapse 1) took place well before reduced precipitation, hence this was not a drought-induced societal change and 2) a few resilient communities sustained some traditions at other sites, hence the chronology for the site of Tiwanaku cannot be transposed to all sites with similar material culture
