    Claiming expertise from betwixt and between: Digital humanities librarians, emotional labor, and genre theory

    Librarians\u27 liminal (intermediate) position within academia situates us to make unique contributions to digital humanities (DH). In this article, we use genre theory, feminist theory, and theories of emotional labor to explore the importance of discourse mediation and affective labor to DH and the interplay between these areas and academic structural inequality. By claiming our expertise and making explicit work that is often not visible, we can advocate for new and varied roles for librarians in digital humanities. Our analysis is informed by both theory and practice, and it takes a dialogic approach that depends upon the interactions between the two

    ACRL released the new Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education in 2015, and since then librarians nationwide have been seeking support and resources for how to implement these new best practices at their institution and in their teaching practice. MLA\u27s Instruction RoundTable (IRT) responded by creating 23 Framework Things (https://23frameworkthings.wordpress.com/), an online professional development opportunity that helps Minnesota librarians learn about the Framework, engage with it through activities, earn prizes/badges, and share strategies with an emerging community of practice. This session will feature a showcase of librarians from different types of academic institutions, large and small, sharing how they have engaged with the Framework though their participation in 23 Framework Things.     Finding Expertise in Your Own Backyard: Creating Communities of Practice to Support Learning about the Framework

    This chapter will focus on successful strategies for creating ongoing professional development opportunities and building communities of practice around the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. Drawing on the authors’ experiences developing free and low-cost opportunities for Framework-related professional development as former co-chairs of the Minnesota Library Association Instruction Roundtable (IRT), our case study will demonstrate that many barriers to Framework-related professional development can be overcome by leveraging expertise from communities of practice and taking a user-centered approach to design. Using the 23 Framework Things program and interviews with program participants, we will highlight how the design and content of Framework-related professional development can draw on the learning theories that inform the Framework itself, be accessible to a wide range of audiences and local contexts by employing a flexible structure and provide a forum for librarians engaging in collaborative learning

The development of the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) Standards Framework for Learners provides new opportunities for school and academic librarians to find common ground. In this session, three current and former chairs of the Minnesota Library Association Instruction Roundtable will explore connections between these two guiding documents and the ways in which they approach information literacy. Building on these connections, presenters will offer practical strategies for engaging in ongoing professional development and building communities of practice around the ACRL and AASL Frameworks

    An open resource combining multi-contrast MRI and microscopy in the macaque brain

    Understanding brain structure and function often requires combining data across different modalities and scales to link microscale cellular structures to macroscale features of whole brain organisation. Here we introduce the BigMac dataset, a resource combining in vivo MRI, extensive postmortem MRI and multi-contrast microscopy for multimodal characterisation of a single whole macaque brain. The data spans modalities (MRI and microscopy), tissue states (in vivo and postmortem), and four orders of spatial magnitude, from microscopy images with micrometre or sub-micrometre resolution, to MRI signals on the order of millimetres. Crucially, the MRI and microscopy images are carefully co-registered together to facilitate quantitative multimodal analyses. Here we detail the acquisition, curation, and first release of the data, that together make BigMac a unique, openly-disseminated resource available to researchers worldwide. Further, we demonstrate example analyses and opportunities afforded by the data, including improvement of connectivity estimates from ultra-high angular resolution diffusion MRI, neuroanatomical insight provided by polarised light imaging and myelin-stained histology, and the joint analysis of MRI and microscopy data for reconstruction of the microscopy-inspired connectome.     Mesothelioma and Radical Surgery 2 (MARS 2): protocol for a multicentre randomised trial comparing (extended) pleurectomy decortication versus no (extended) pleurectomy decortication for patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma.

    INTRODUCTION: Mesothelioma remains a lethal cancer. To date, systemic therapy with pemetrexed and a platinum drug remains the only licensed standard of care. As the median survival for patients with mesothelioma is 12.1 months, surgery is an important consideration to improve survival and/or quality of life. Currently, only two surgical trials have been performed which found that neither extensive (extra-pleural pneumonectomy) or limited (partial pleurectomy) surgery improved survival (although there was some evidence of improved quality of life). Therefore, clinicians are now looking to evaluate pleurectomy decortication, the only radical treatment option left. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The MARS 2 study is a UK multicentre open parallel group randomised controlled trial comparing the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of surgery-(extended) pleurectomy decortication-versus no surgery for the treatment of pleural mesothelioma. The study will test the hypothesis that surgery and chemotherapy is superior to chemotherapy alone with respect to overall survival. Secondary outcomes include health-related quality of life, progression-free survival, measures of safety (adverse events) and resource use to 2 years. The QuinteT Recruitment Intervention is integrated into the trial to optimise recruitment. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Research ethics approval was granted by London - Camberwell St. Giles Research Ethics Committee (reference 13/LO/1481) on 7 November 2013. We will submit the results for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBERS: ISRCTN-ISRCTN44351742 and ClinicalTrials.gov-NCT02040272

    The Exhibition Library reimagines the medium of art exhibition as well as that of art catalogue. Catalogues carry exhibitions through time and space, figuring as tropes for imagining arrangements and the course of works and settings they describe. However, they rarely give us a clue about what really happened, since they are often made before the show opens. Rather than documenting it, they often stand on their own, almost as if another work on display, truly as an artistic medium on its own. For this work, artists, designers, curators, poets and collectives created thirty catalogues of imaginary exhibitions. Exploring both the potential and impossible in art, the resulting exhibition library also serves as a “library of exhibitions.

    Os M. pretenderam traçar um quadro da HistĂłria da Alimentação, nĂŁo como um novo ramo epistemolĂłgico da disciplina, mas como um campo em desenvolvimento de prĂĄticas e atividades especializadas, incluindo pesquisa, formação, publicaçÔes, associaçÔes, encontros acadĂȘmicos, etc. Um breve relato das condiçÔes em que tal campo se assentou faz-se preceder de um panorama dos estudos de alimentação e temas correia tos, em geral, segundo cinco abardagens Ia biolĂłgica, a econĂŽmica, a social, a cultural e a filosĂłfica!, assim como da identificação das contribuiçÔes mais relevantes da Antropologia, Arqueologia, Sociologia e Geografia. A fim de comentar a multiforme e volumosa bibliografia histĂłrica, foi ela organizada segundo critĂ©rios morfolĂłgicos. A seguir, alguns tĂłpicos importantes mereceram tratamento Ă  parte: a fome, o alimento e o domĂ­nio religioso, as descobertas europĂ©ias e a difusĂŁo mundial de alimentos, gosto e gastronomia.
