Push-pull π-conjugated systems of the thiophene type have several interesting applications as nonlinear optical (NLO) and photochromic materials, sensitizers for dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), etc. As part of an on-going research to develop efficient donor-acceptor substituted heterocyclic systems for diverse applications such as NLO and organic sensitizers for DSSCs, we report in this communication the synthesis and characterization of two novel heterocyclic compounds 1-2, using several synthetic methodologies. These new push-pull systems are based on a furan donor moiety and a thieno[3,2-b]thiophene spacer, functionalized with different electron withdrawing groups. The full characterization of the new compounds was performed using UV-visible (absorption and emission), 1H NMR and IR spectroscopies. The experimental results showed that the optical and electronic properties of these push-pull systems can be readily tuned by varying the electron-acceptor strength of the groups linked to the thieno[3,2-b]thiophene π-bridge. Moreover, their push-pull character with a significant intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) from the donor furan heterocycle to the acceptor groups and a high polarizability of the whole π-conjugated systems reveal their potential application as chromophores for NLO and/or as sensitizers for DSSCs.FCTFEDERQRE

Social presence and the composite face effect

    Get PDF
A robust finding in social psychology research is that performance is modulated by the social nature of a given context promoting social inhibition or facilitation effects. In the present experiment, we examined if and how social presence impacts holistic face perception processes by asking participants, in the presence of others and alone, to perform the composite face task. Results suggest that completing the task in the presence of others (i.e., mere co-action) is associated with better performance in face recognition (less bias and higher discrimination between presented and non-presented targets) and with a reduction in the composite face effect. These results make clear that social presence impact on the composite face effect does not occur because presence increases reliance on holistic processing as a "dominant" well-learned response, but instead, because it increases monitoring of the interference produced by automatic response.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Tomato is one of the most consumed vegetables in the world, and its intake is known to be beneficial for human health. The nutritional quality of tomato is connected with numerous factors namely the cultivation system. To achieve the highest fruit quality and yield, the cherry tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. var. Moscatel RZ) was cultivated in three cultivation systems and its nutritional quality was evaluated. The highest fruit productivity, 2135–2240 g plant-1 dry weight (dw), was observed for the cherry tomatoes grown in the soilless systems. The cherry tomato from the hydroponic culture had the highest protein (13.41% dw), lipid (3.20% dw), sugar (354.94 mg g-1 dw) and taste index (1.24). It also comprised high amounts of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, like oleic (1.28 mg g-1 dw) and linoleic acids (5.42 mg g-1 dw). With respect to cherry tomato from the organic culture, higher contents of carotenoids—lycopene (47.1 mg kg-1 dw) and polyphenols (56.7 mg GAE 100 g-1 dw) were verified. Flavonoids were the main family of phenolic compounds found in the cherry tomato. The highest levels of chalconaringenin (51.95 mg 100 g-1 dw) and rutin (39.69 mg 100 g-1 dw) were observed in the cherry tomatoes cultivated through organic practices. This study shows that the agronomic system greatly influences the different characteristics associated with fruit quality. Hydroponic cultures presented higher quality, namely texture and taste, while the higher amounts of bioactive compounds were found in the organic culture.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Objective: To conduct a systematic review of the existing literature about the applicability of scales/indicators for pain monitoring in critically ill patients who are unable to verbalize. Methods: We performed a systematic review of the literature, according to the Joanna Briggs Institute's guidelines, in the following databases: MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. The search was executed using, as main descriptors, "Critically Ill Patient", "Pain", "Scale" and "Instrument", in Portuguese, English, Italian, and Spanish. We considered the period between January 2012 and December 2017, and obtained a total of 149 results. From these, we selected 11 fi nal full-text articles for extraction and analysis, which met the required inclusion criteria. Two researchers made the search and two independent reviewers carried out the critical evaluation, extraction and synthesis of the data. Results: The key to adequate pain management lies in detecting and assessing several indicators, such as: facial expression, vocalization, body movements, muscle tone, adaptation to mechanical ventilation. Subsequently, it is fundamental to intervene accordingly and to reassess the patient's status. The BPS (Behavioral Pain Scale) and the CPOT (Critical-care Pain Observation Tool) are considered the most appropriate scales for pain assessment in critically ill patients who are incapable of verbalizing. While the BPS should only be used in ventilated patients, the CPOT can be used in both ventilated and non-ventilated patients. Conclusion: The BPS and the CPOT are two scales recognized as reliable, valid, and easy to apply, for pain monitoring in critically ill patients who are unable to verbalize their pain.

Grids of stellar evolution models for asteroseismology (CESAM + POSC)

    Get PDF
In this paper we present a grid of stellar evolution models, computed with an up-to-date physical description of the internal structure, using the Code d'Evolution Stellaire Adaptatif et Modulaire (CESAM). The evolutionary sequences span from the pre-main sequence to the beginning of the Red Giant Branch and cover an interval of mass typical for low and intermediate mass stars. The chemical composition (both helium and metal abundance) is the solar one. The frequencies of oscillation, computed for specific stellar models of the grid using the Porto Oscillations Code (POSC), are also provided. This work was accomplished in order to support the preparation of the CoRoT mission within the Evolution and Seismic Tools Activity (CoRoT/ESTA). On the other hand, the grid can also be used, more generally, to interpret the observational properties of either individual stars or stellar populations. The grids (data and documentation) can be found at http://www.astro.up.pt/corot/models/cesamComment: Paper accepted for publication by Astrophysics and Space Scienc

Terpyridine derivatives functionalized with (hetero)aromatic groups and the corresponding Ru complexes: synthesis and characterization as SHG chromophores

    Get PDF
Push–pull terpyridine derivatives were synthesized and characterized in order to study the variations produced in their optical and electronic properties by linking different (hetero)aromatic electron donor moieties at position 4 of the electron deficient terpyridine moiety. The final donor-acceptor systems were synthesized in fair to good yields by Kröhnke condensation of the precursor aldehydes, with 2-acetylpyridine. Hyper-Rayleigh scattering in dioxane solutions using a fundamental wavelength of 1064 nm was employed to evaluate their second-order nonlinear optical properties. Terpyridine derivative functionalized with the 9-ethyl-9H-carbazolyl group exhibited the largest first hyperpolarizability (beta = 610 × 10-30 esu, using the T convention) thus indicating its potential application as a second harmonic generation (SHG) chromophore. Terpyridine derivatives were also used as ligands for the synthesis of novel [RuII(tpy)(NCS)3]– complexes, prepared in good yields by a two-step procedure involving the preparation of [RuIII(tpy)(Cl3] as precursors. RutheniumII complexes display a broad absorption in the visible range, accounting for their very dark color. Their redox behaviour is mainly characterized by the RuII-RuIII oxidation and by the ligand-centred reduction, whose potentials can be finely tuned by the electronic properties of the aromatic substituents on the terpyridine ligand. Hyper-Rayleigh scattering in methanol solutions using a fundamental wavelength of 1064 nm was also employed to evaluate their second-order nonlinear optical properties. Thanks are due to Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia and FEDERCOMPETE for financial support through Centro de Química (UID/QUI/ 00686/2013 and UID/QUI/0686/2016), and a PhD grant to S.
