Steiner Waldorf Education in transition : critical narratives towards renewal

Steiner Waldorf Education (SWE) is undergoing a significant transition in its one hundredth year of existence. At a time when its influence across the globe is unparalleled, challenges are emerging that threaten to disrupt the traditional and stable model of SWE. There is also a heightening of concern that the gift of SWE may be corrupted. At the same time, there is a growing sense of criticality and reflexivity animating research and thinking about SWE and its global future. The intent of this critical study is to tease out from a hermeneutic engagement with teachers’ lived experiences, areas of dysfunction in Steiner Waldorf (SW) praxis, as well as to offer new narratives that might contribute to the renewal of SWE in the 21st century. The study is framed as a heuristic-narrative inquiry into SWE in a time of transition. The Parzival question (what ails you?) is summoned to draw from teachers’ lived experiences of working and living in SWE, problematic narratives and disruptive practices that underscore some of the commonly perceived though marginally articulated issues, confronting SWE. The study emerges from the researcher’s own critical and appreciative experiences in various Steiner organisations, across a number of portfolios, focussing on 17 years teaching from early childhood to secondary education, as well as managing a high school. Fundamental to the study are fifteen dialogic conversations with former and current SW educators working in Australian schools. These dialogues contribute towards delineating key fault lines that reveal powerful tensions within the fabric of SWE and particularly the enigmatic and contested relationship between educational praxis and its anthroposophical theoretical foundations. A number of themes are distilled from the qualitative interviews, including anthroposophy, leadership, professional culture and learning, the learning culture and curriculum, emotionality, isolation and spiritual superiority. Two ubiquitous leitmotivs are chosen to further explore and interconnect these thematic links. The hermeneutic-phenomenological reading of teachers’ described experiences is distilled to identify and promote innovative approaches and resistant questions that challenge the status quo of Steiner Waldorf praxis. The final chapters propose positive and individual narratives that may help to link more fully with the strong instinctive powers that undergird SWE and inspire teachers to stake their creative imaginations on idiosyncratic readings of Steiner and deeply etched images of their personal callings as Steiner teachers

The C-terminal extension of the beta 7 subunit and activator complexes stabilize nascent 20 S proteasomes and promote their maturation

The eukaryotic 20 S proteasome is formed by dimerization of two precursor complexes containing the maturation factor Ump1. beta 7/Pre4 is the only one of the 14 subunits forming the 20 S proteasome that is absent from these precursor complexes in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Increased expression of Pre4 leads to a reduction in the level of precursor complex, indicating that Pre4 incorporation into these complexes is rate-limiting for their dimerization. When we purified these precursor complexes, we observed co-purification of Blm10, a large protein known to attach to the alpha ring surface of proteasomes. In contrast to single mutants lacking either Blm10 or the C-terminal extension of Pre4, a mutant lacking both grew extremely poorly, accumulated very high levels of precursor complexes, and was impaired in beta subunit maturation. The effect of blm10 Delta on proteasome biogenesis is modest, apparently because the 19 S regulatory particle is capable of substituting for Blm10, as long as precursor complex dimers are stabilized by the Pre4Cterminus. We found that a mutation (sen3/rpn2) affecting the Rpn2 subunit inhibits attachment of the 19 S activator to the 20 S particle or its precursors. Although the sen3 mutation alone had no apparent effect on precursor complex dimerization and active site maturation, the sen3 blm10 double mutant was impaired in these processes. Together these data demonstrate that Blm10 and the 19 S activator have a partially redundant function in stabilizing nascent 20 S proteasomes and in promoting their activation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Studium muneris et potestatis in hoc contextu necnon relatio inter ministerium ecclesiasticum, munus pastorale, munus regendi et potestatem conclusionem permittere videtur secundum quam sensu juridico de potestate ordinis et de potestate magisterii independente a potestate jurisdictionis vel in ea inclusa loqui non deberet.----------------------------------- Abstract The topic of the relations between the pastoral function and power in the Church continues to put forward, after Vatican Council 11, a series of interesting problems. On the one hand, the identification by the preconciliar doctrine of clericate and hierarchy and its recognition of the exclusive capacity of clergymen to be the titularies of power in the Church, and , on the other hand, the famous bipartition or tripartition of the power of the Church, seem to have as background a personalistic vision of the ecclesiastical hierarchy. In the light of Vatican Council 11, it seems that the problems put fcrth by the relation between the pastoral function and power in the Church can be solved best when they are contemplated from the starting point of an institutionalistic vision of the Church. The sudy of the munus and the potestas in this context and the comparison between ecclesiastical ministry, pastoral function, governing function, and power seem to permit the conclusion that it must not be spoken of -in juridical terms- a power of arder and a power of magisterium independent of the power of jurisdiction, or in it included

Summarium Procul dubio Concilii Vaticani 11 fuit final itas pastoralis. In constituenda dioecesi, curia iuridica a pastorali distenguebatur, prodentibus praxi multoties sectis atque obiectis diversis muneribus episcopi dioecesani. --------------------------------------------- Abstract There is no doubt that Vat. 11 was characterized for its unmistakeable pastoral orientation. But this pastoral concern has been so emphasized by Vat. II's commentarists that we have arrived to a kind of oppostion between pastoral and law, pastoral and dogma, pastoral and moral. Rejecting current Canon law as unpastoral, a new pastoral law was sought. On a diocesan level distinctions began to be made between juridical government and pastoral government, with the corresponding divisionsand contradictions in the diocesan bishop's real functions. This state of things brought the author to study what Vat. 11 really meant by pastor and pastoral tunction. Given the pastoral references of Council documents, particularly the Constitution Lumen Gentium and the decree Christus Dominus, to texts of the Old and New Testaments, the author analyzes the concept and misión of shepherd in Holy Scripture, and also in extrabiblical literature for its relation to biblical texts. Hence the idea and mission of shepherd is studied in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Phenicia, and Chanaan along with Greek and Hellenic civilizations. Befare entering into the question of shepherd in the Old Testament, brief references are made to the life of shepherds in Palestine as well as to pastoral terms in the Bible. The pastoral theme is studied in the Old Testament chronologically. In the first place, in the time of the Patriarchs ,and later, in the Monarchy. Different sections are dedicated to the concept of shepherd in the Psalms, in pre-exilic prophets, in Ezechiel, in Zachariah, in the Book of Isaiah. and finally. in Psalm 23. The study of the pastoral theme in the New Testament begins with an overall vision, followed by specific considerations of the Synoptic authors. the Gospel of Sto John, and the remaining writings of the New Testamento A special partdeals with the relatioship between pastoral ca re (apacentar) and episkopos, between shepherd and bishop-along with their synonyms in Apostolic times. The section ends with patristic interpretations of pastoral texts in the Bible. After reviewing the concept of shepherd and pastoral function in Holy Scripture. the theme is studied in the documents of Vat. 11. The use of the word shepherd is considered in Council documents, and a lack of terminological uniformity when speaking of pastoral function is noted. The author then makes an attempt to find the notion and content of the pastoral munus of bishops and priests. arriving in this way to the concept of shepherd and pastoral function in Vat. 11

    Riemann-Langevin Particle Filtering in Track-Before-Detect

    Get PDF
Track-before-detect (TBD) is a powerful approach that consists in providing the tracker with sensor measurements directly without pre-detection. Due to the measurement model non-linearities, online state estimation in TBD is most commonly solved via particle filtering. Existing particle filters for TBD do not incorporate measurement information in their proposal distribution. The Langevin Monte Carlo (LMC) is a sampling method whose proposal is able to exploit all available knowledge of the posterior (that is, both prior and measurement information). This letter synthesizes recent advances in LMC-based filtering to describe the Riemann-Langevin particle filter and introduces its novel application to TBD. The benefits of our approach are illustrated in a challenging low-noise scenario.Comment: Minor grammatical update

Introducing the Filtered Park’s and Filtered Extended Park’s Vector Approach to Detect Broken Rotor Bars in Induction Motors Independently from the Rotor Slots Number

[EN] The Park's Vector Approach (PVA), together with its variations, has been one of the most widespread diagnostic methods for electrical machines and drives. Regarding the broken rotor bars fault diagnosis in induction motors, the common practice is to rely on the width increase of the Park's Vector (PV) ring and then apply some more sophisticated signal processing methods. It is shown in this paper that this method can be unreliable and is strongly dependent on the magnetic poles and rotor slot numbers. To overcome this constraint, the novel Filtered Park's/Extended Park's Vector Approach (FPVA/FEPVA) is introduced. The investigation is carried out with FEM simulations and experimental testing. The results prove to satisfyingly coincide, whereas the proposed advanced FPVA method is desirably reliable. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd.
