    the role of intercultural mediation

Migration is generally described as a process that is nationally specific and that have features common to several countries. This has been shown by several authors through comparative research that compares the migration process of the same immigrant group to several countries (among others, Engbersen, Snel, & de Boom, 2010) or which scrutinises the migration realities of different countries (Zimmermann, 2005). Most of these studies are about geographically near countries, which are part of the same political system (the EU), and that have an established (albeit differentiated) welfare system. These proximities (geographical, but also political and social) allowed the authors of these studies to conceptualise the existence of several migration models or regimes: the southern European model (Baldwin-Edwards, 2012), the Iberian model of Migration (Malheiros, 2012); the intra-EU mobility regime (Engbersen et al., 2017). These migratory regimes are intertwined by migrant integration models or by different approaches to increasingly diverse populations. Although these are often identified as ‘national models of integration’, they do not fail to integrate the developments that have been recorded in the last decades in the international contexts in which the countries are inserted. Throughout the present text, the Portuguese experience in dealing with immigrant integration is used to reflect on the development of intercultural policies and practices, and on the role of intercultural mediation. The article is structured in the following way: in the introductory section we will review the discussion on interculturalism; in a second section the Portuguese immigration context will be presented; in a third section the integration of immigrants in the country will be analysed, given special attention to the development of policies that support immigrants’ integration process. In the fourth section, the role of intercultural mediation for the integration of immigrants will be considered.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The role of cost accounting in the university performance measurement in Portugal

    Get PDF
Cost accounting is aimed at emphasising those elements of costs and profits of original importance to the management board of an organizational unit. Therefore, cost accounting was initially understood as mere collector of costs and profits, using the traditional system of costing everything, a budget with a limited base. Originally, it was designed to calculate real costs with the aim to determine the results. In public organizations, the aim of cost accounting, costs or management, can be summarized as follows: o Obtain information of how costs are found, both the ones corresponding to the internal activities as well as those for external services rendered and the cost realized investments; o Obtain information for cost and control management, with efficiency indicators of how the planned objectives were achieved and the efficient use of available resources. This paper aims at knowing the role of cost accounting in the public sector of higher education, and checks its contribution for the establishment of the management indicators in public institutions of higher education.Cost Accounting, management, indicators, education

Why Do People Buy Lottery Products?

    Get PDF
This paper examines the lottery sales of 99 countries by type of product in order to analyze the socioeconomic and demographic features that help to explain gambling consumption around the world. With a panel data analysis covering 13 years, this study explains the variation of a country’s per-capita lottery sales in general and by type of game: lotto, numbers, keno, toto, draw and instant. This paper found that the richer countries spend more than the poorer countries and the income elasticity of the demand for lottery products is greater than one. So, we may assert that there is an implicit progressivity tax in games when we consider countries rather than households. Several studies have also revealed an inverse relationship between education and the consumption of lottery products. This paper confirms this hypothesis for lotteries in general, but not for the specific lottery products.Gambling; Lotteries; Religiosity; Education; Culture; Age; Panel Data.

    Get PDF
This paper stresses the potential of innovative business cooperation networks in promoting regional competitiveness. It is based on the case study of a cooperation network, named “House of the Future”, carried out in the framework of a project where the University of Aveiro has an important role. It suggests success factors in the development of co-operation networks between firms from various sectors and a university. The aim of the “House of the Future” initiative is to promote an innovative approach to inter-organizational cooperation joining together firms from a number of different industrial activities related with the habitat meta-sector. This collaborative effort can function as an experiment for the design of regional innovation policies.

The way organizational models shape human resource management practices and the perceptions of workers

    Get PDF
The main aim of this study was to analyse the way organizational models shape human resource management practices in firms linked to technology-intensive sectors. We used multiple-case study methodology. Four firms we chosen for the case study. The methodology included the use of a series of data collecting techniques, namely: interviews with HRM directors, questionnaires to workers, documental analysis and observation. Our main findings were, first, that the sector of activity, understood in societal terms, emerges as an important factor of isomorphism between the firms. This isomorphism is due to the necessity of firms to comply with the Quality Management requirements and the demands of clients. Second, the firms that have adopted the “lean” model have similar HRM systems and similar conceptualizations of human capital. Both firms have codifying HRM models and both conceptualize their human capital as having low value and singularity. Third, the perception of access to information and the perception of job enrichment are the two factors that differentiate employees' perceptions about work. These factors are, however, shaped by team-work. Team work seems to be responsible for a higher perception of access to information and to supportive leadership. The perception of job enrichment is correlated to the perception of an innovative culture

In Contos da Montanha, Miguel Torga portrays/ creates a rural society in which solidarity seems to be first and foremost the dominant feature. But the social structure is only apparently simple. Forms of address, in particular, show the specificity of interpersonal relations which I shall examine paying attention to the parameters of distance, power and conflict proposed by Catherine Kerbrat-Orecchioni (1992) after Brown and Levinson (1987)

ERASMUS+ IN HIGHER EDUCATION: THE EXPERIENCE OF INCOMING STUDENTS AT A BUSINESS AND ADMINISTRATION SCHOOL IN PORTUGAL

    Get PDF
Erasmus+ is the most widespread student short-term mobility programme in the EU and it has become mandatory in some of the business degrees. The main aim of this study was to analyse Erasmus incoming students ‘expectations and competences developed. The students were enrolled in a course in the field of Organisational Behaviour at a Business School and Administration School of a University of Applied Sciences. Methodologically it consisted of a qualitative study carried out in two stages: a first questionnaire was applied to the 30 students present in the opening class and a second questionnaire was applied to the 35 that wrote the final test of the course. At the beginning of the semester students were asked about their motivations and expectations for Erasmus and the course, at the end of the semester students were asked the competences they perceived they developed and their experience. Students were from the bachelor and master’s degrees and all of them were from western and eastern European higher education institutions. Our main findings were that Erasmus students’ motivations for the course, and the Erasmus experience, were related to “vacational”/leisure reasons and the opportunity to develop competences associated with culture awareness and working in multicultural groups, followed by the motivation to improve their proficiency in English. Personal development and independence were also mentioned but less salient. As to the competences they perceived they developed, culture awareness and the ability to work in multicultural groups are the most salient but it was followed by independence, sense of initiative and autonomy. The perception of competences to work in international assignments is also mentioned but it is not very salient.  Article visualizations
