Inclusive Fitness and Differential Productivity Across the Life Course Determine Intergenerational Transfers in a Small-Scale Human Society
Transfers of resources between generations are an essential element in current models of human life-history evolution accounting for prolonged development, extended lifespan and menopause. Integrating these models with Hamilton’s theory of inclusive fitness, we predict that the interaction of biological kinship with the age-schedule of resource production should be a key driver of intergenerational transfers. In the empirical case of Tsimane’ forager–horticulturalists in Bolivian Amazonia, we provide a detailed characterization of net transfers of food according to age, sex, kinship and the net need of donors and recipients. We show that parents, grandparents and siblings provide significant net downward transfers of food across generations. We demonstrate that the extent of provisioning responds facultatively to variation in the productivity and demographic composition of families, as predicted by the theory. We hypothesize that the motivation to provide these critical transfers is a fundamental force that binds together human nuclear and extended families. The ubiquity of three-generational families in human societies may thus be a direct reflection of fundamental evolutionary constraints on an organism’s life-history and social organization
The stellar host in blue compact dwarf galaxies: the need for a two-dimensional fit
The structural properties of the low surface brightness stellar host in blue
compact dwarf galaxies are often studied by fitting r^{1/n} models to the outer
regions of their radial profiles. The limitations imposed by the presence of a
large starburst emission overlapping the underlying component makes this kind
of analysis a difficult task. We propose a two-dimensional fitting methodology
in order to improve the extraction of the structural parameters of the LSB
host. We discuss its advantages and weaknesses by using a set of simulated
galaxies and compare the results for a sample of eight objects with those
already obtained using a one-dimensional technique. We fit a PSF convolved
Sersic model to synthetic galaxies, and to real galaxy images in the B, V, R
filters. We restrict the fit to the stellar host by masking out the starburst
region and take special care to minimize the sky-subtraction uncertainties. In
order to test the robustness and flexibility of the method, we carry out a set
of fits with synthetic galaxies. Furthermore consistency checks are performed
to assess the reliability and accuracy of the derived structural parameters.
The more accurate isolation of the starburst emission is the most important
advantage and strength of the method. Thus, we fit the host galaxy in a range
of surface brightness and in a portion of area larger than in previous
published 1D fits with the same dataset. We obtain robust fits for all the
sample galaxies, all of which, except one, show Sersic indices n very close to
1, with good agreement in the three bands. These findings suggest that the
stellar hosts in BCDs have near-exponential profiles, a result that will help
us to understand the mechanisms that form and shape BCD galaxies, and how they

Cerebrovascular Reactivity and Central Arterial Stiffness in Habitually Exercising Healthy Adults
Reduced cerebrovascular reactivity to a vasoactive stimulus is associated with age-related diseases such as stroke and cognitive decline. Habitual exercise is protective against cognitive decline and is associated with reduced stiffness of the large central arteries that perfuse the brain. In this context, we evaluated the age-related differences in cerebrovascular reactivity in healthy adults who habitually exercise. In addition, we sought to determine the association between central arterial stiffness and cerebrovascular reactivity. We recruited 22 young (YA: age = 27 ± 5 years, range 18–35 years) and 21 older (OA: age = 60 ± 4 years, range 56–68 years) habitual exercisers who partake in at least 150 min of structured aerobic exercise each week. Middle cerebral artery velocity (MCAv) was recorded using transcranial Doppler ultrasound. In order to assess cerebrovascular reactivity, MCAv, end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2), and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were continuously recorded at rest and during stepwise elevations of 2, 4, and 6% inhaled CO2. Cerebrovascular conductance index (CVCi) was calculated as MCAv/MAP. Central arterial stiffness was assessed using carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV). Older adults had higher PWV (YA: 6.2 ± 1.2 m/s; OA: 7.5 ± 1.3 m/s; p < 0.05) compared with young adults. MCAv and CVCi reactivity to hypercapnia were not different between young and older adults (MCAv reactivity, YA: 2.0 ± 0.2 cm/s/mmHg; OA: 2.0 ± 0.2 cm/s/mmHg; p = 0.77, CVCi reactivity, YA: 0.018 ± 0.002 cm/s/mmHg2; OA: 0.015 ± 0.001 cm/s/mmHg2; p = 0.27); however, older adults demonstrated higher MAP reactivity to hypercapnia (YA: 0.4 ± 0.1 mmHg/mmHg; OA: 0.7 ± 0.1 mmHg/mmHg; p < 0.05). There were no associations between PWV and cerebrovascular reactivity (range: r = 0.00–0.39; p = 0.07–0.99). Our results demonstrate that cerebrovascular reactivity was not different between young and older adults who habitually exercise; however, MAP reactivity was augmented in older adults. This suggests an age-associated difference in the reliance on MAP to increase cerebral blood flow during hypercapnia

Foraging strategies and diet composition of Hadza children
Among the Hazda hunter-gatherers of Tanzania, children are active foragers and collect various types of wild plant foods and hunt small sized prey animals. The collection effort of Hazda children is reported to have a positive effect on a mother’s foraging yield (Bulurton-Jones et at. 1994, Journal of Anthropological Research 50(3): 217; Hawkes et al. 1995, Current Anthropology 36(4): 688), yet few quantitative data are available on the caloric values of children’s foods and the ways in which children distribute their own foraging yield. Here, we report on foraging return rates, consumption data, and the compositional values for several of the plant foods collected by children. Due to predator pressure, it is not safe for children to wander far from camp without adult supervision, therefore they typically focus on foods that are close to camp and easy to collect and process. We calculated the caloric content for the following foods: baobab fruit (346 kcal/100g dry matter (DM)), berries (320 kcal/100g DM), legumes (311 kcal/100g DM), drupes (325 kcal/100g DM), and figs (365 kcal/100g DM). Legumes, drupes, and figs have not been previously analyzed; our values for baobab and berries agree with previous analyses (Murray et al. 2001, Journal of Food Consumption and Analysis 14: 3). In addition, we calculated foraging return rates and daily consumption values for children. Our results suggest that they collect a significant portion of their daily caloric intake and act as allomothers providing caloric contributions to other children.

New southern blue compact dwarf galaxies in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey
Aiming to find new extremely metal-deficient star-forming galaxies we
extracted from the Two-Degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) 100K Data
Release 14 emission-line galaxies with relatively strong [OIII] 4363 emission.
Spectroscopic and photometric studies of this sample and, in addition, of 7
Tololo and 2 UM galaxies were performed on the basis of observations with the
ESO 3.6m telescope. All sample galaxies qualify with respect to their
photometric and spectroscopic properties as blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies.
Additionally, they show a good overlap with a comparison sample of 100
well-studied emission-line galaxies on the 12+log(O/H) vs. log(Ne/O), log(Ar/O)
and log(Fe/O) planes. From the analysis of the 2dFGRS subsample we report the
discovery of two new extremely metal-deficient BCDs with an oxygen abundance
12+log(O/H) < 7.6 and of another seven galaxies with 12+log(O/H) < 7.8.
Furthermore, we confirm previous oxygen abundance determinations for the BCDs
Tol 1304-353, Tol 2146-391, UM 559 and UM 570 to be 12+log(O/H) < 7.8.Comment: 26 pages, 65 figures, 5 tables, uses psfig.sty, Accepted for

Mapping Luminous Blue Compact Galaxies with VIRUS-P: morphology, line ratios and kinematics
[abridged] We carry out an integral field spectroscopy (IFS) study of a
sample of luminous BCGs, with the aim to probe the morphology, kinematics, dust
extinction and excitation mechanisms of their warm interstellar medium (ISM).
IFS data for five luminous BCGs were obtained using VIRUS-P, the prototype
instrument for the Visible Integral Field Replicable Unit Spectrograph,
attached to the 2.7m Harlan J. Smith Telescope at the McDonald Observatory.
VIRUS-P consists of a square array of 247 optical fibers, which covers a
109"x109" field of view, with a spatial sampling of 4.2" and a 0.3 filling
factor. We observed in the 3550-5850 Angstrom spectral range, with a resolution
of 5 A FWHM. From these data we built two-dimensional maps of the continuum and
the most prominent emission-lines ([OII]3727, Hgamma, Hbeta and [OIII]5007),
and investigate the morphology of diagnostic emission-line ratios and the
extinction patterns in the ISM as well as stellar and gas kinematics.
Additionally, from integrated spectra we infer total line fluxes and
luminosity-weighted extinction coefficients and gas-phase metallicities. All
galaxies exhibit an overall regular morphology in the stellar continuum, while
their warm ISM morphology is more complex: in II Zw 33 and Mrk 314, the
star-forming regions are aligned along a chain-structure; Haro 1, NGC 4670 and
III Zw 102 display several salient features, such as extended gaseous filaments
and bubbles. A significant intrinsic absorption by dust is present in all
galaxies, the most extreme case being III Zw 102. Our data reveal a manifold of
kinematical patterns, from overall regular gas and stellar rotation to complex
velocity fields produced by structurally and kinematically distinct components.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 16 pages, 10 figure
