    Mapping systematic errors in helium abundance determinations using Markov Chain Monte Carlo

    Monte Carlo techniques have been used to evaluate the statistical and systematic uncertainties in the helium abundances derived from extragalactic H~II regions. The helium abundance is sensitive to several physical parameters associated with the H~II region. In this work, we introduce Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods to efficiently explore the parameter space and determine the helium abundance, the physical parameters, and the uncertainties derived from observations of metal poor nebulae. Experiments with synthetic data show that the MCMC method is superior to previous implementations (based on flux perturbation) in that it is not affected by biases due to non-physical parameter space. The MCMC analysis allows a detailed exploration of degeneracies, and, in particular, a false minimum that occurs at large values of optical depth in the He~I emission lines. We demonstrate that introducing the electron temperature derived from the [O~III] emission lines as a prior, in a very conservative manner, produces negligible bias and effectively eliminates the false minima occurring at large optical depth. We perform a frequentist analysis on data from several "high quality" systems. Likelihood plots illustrate degeneracies, asymmetries, and limits of the determination. In agreement with previous work, we find relatively large systematic errors, limiting the precision of the primordial helium abundance for currently available spectra.Comment: 25 pages, 11 figure

    NESTOR: A neutrino particle astrophysics underwater laboratory for the Mediterranean

    Abstract An underwater neutrino astrophysics laboratory, to be located in the international waters off the Southwest of Greece, near the town of Pylos is now under construction. In the last two years a group of physicists from Greece and Russia have carried out two demonstration experiments in 4km deep water, counting muons and verifying the adequacy of the deep sea site. Plans are presented for a 100, 000 m 2 high energy neutrino detector composed of a hexagon of hexagonal towers, with 1176 optical detector units. A progress report is given and the physics potential of a siggle tower with 168 phototubes (currently under construction) is described

    Beam Spin Asymmetries in DVCS with CLAS at 4 .8 GeV

    We report measurements of the beam spin asymmetry in Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) at an electron beam energy of 4.8 GeV using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The DVCS beam spin asymmetry has been measured in a wide range of kinematics, 1(GeV/c)2^2 <Q2<2.8<Q^2<2.8(GeV/c)2^2, 0.12<xB<0.480.12<x_B<0.48, and 0.1 (GeV/c)2^2 <t<0.8<-t<0.8(GeV/c)2^2, using the reaction \pEpX. The number of H(e,eγp)(e,e^{\prime}\gamma p) and H(e,eπ0p)(e,e^{\prime}\pi^0 p) events are separated in each (Q2,xB,t)(Q^2,x_B,t) bin by a fit to the line shape of the H(e,ep)X(e,e^{\prime}p)X Mx2M_x^2 distribution. The validity of the method was studied in detail using experimental and simulated data. It was shown, that with the achieved missing mass squared resolution and the available statistics, the separation of DVCS-BH and π0\pi^0 events can reliably be done with less than 5% uncertainty. The Q2Q^2- and tt-dependences of the sinϕ\sin\phi moments of the asymmetry are extracted and compared with theoretical calculations

    Measurement of the xx- and Q2Q^2-Dependence of the Asymmetry A1A_1 on the Nucleon

    We report results for the virtual photon asymmetry A1A_1 on the nucleon from new Jefferson Lab measurements. The experiment, which used the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer and longitudinally polarized proton (15^{15}NH3_3) and deuteron (15^{15}ND3_3) targets, collected data with a longitudinally polarized electron beam at energies between 1.6 GeV and 5.7 GeV. In the present paper, we concentrate on our results for A1(x,Q2)A_1(x,Q^2) and the related ratio g1/F1(x,Q2)g_1/F_1(x,Q^2) in the resonance and the deep inelastic regions for our lowest and highest beam energies, covering a range in momentum transfer Q2Q^2 from 0.05 to 5.0 GeV2^2 and in final-state invariant mass WW up to about 3 GeV. Our data show detailed structure in the resonance region, which leads to a strong Q2Q^2--dependence of A1(x,Q2)A_1(x,Q^2) for WW below 2 GeV. At higher WW, a smooth approach to the scaling limit, established by earlier experiments, can be seen, but A1(x,Q2)A_1(x,Q^2) is not strictly Q2Q^2--independent. We add significantly to the world data set at high xx, up to x=0.6x = 0.6. Our data exceed the SU(6)-symmetric quark model expectation for both the proton and the deuteron while being consistent with a negative dd-quark polarization up to our highest xx. This data setshould improve next-to-leading order (NLO) pQCD fits of the parton polarization distributions.Comment: 7 pages LaTeX, 5 figure

    Echinoderms from Todos os Santos Bay and Aratu Bay (Bahia, Brazil)

    Neste trabalho são registrados os equinodermos (exceto Holothuroidea) obtidos durante a execução do projeto "Marine Environmental Evaluation of the Todos os Santos Bay-MAREMBA" em julho/agosto de 1996 e durante o projeto "Geoecologia das comunidades bentônicas infralitorais da Baía de Todos os Santos (BTS), BA, Brasil: diversidade biótica e sedimentológica", (1997). Um total de 33 espécies pertencentes a 15 famílias foram registradas e re-descritas. A distribuição de Ophiactis brasiliensis Manso, 1988 e Amphiodia trychna H.L. Clark, 1918 é estendida para a região nordeste do Brasil. A classe Ophiuroidea foi dominante nas amostragens em termos de abundância e freqüência de ocorrência, em particular as espécies Amphiodia atra Stimpson, 1852, Amphipholis subtilis (Ljungman, 1867), Ophiactislymani Ljungman, 1871 e Ophiostigma isocanthum (Say, 1825). O asteróide Oreaster reticulatus (Linnaeus, 1758) é considerado vulnerável à exploração humana e foi escasso durante as coletas. Outras espécies encontradas na BTS, tais como os asteroides Luidia clathrata (Say, 1825) e L. senegalensis (Lamarck, 1816) e o equinóide Eucidaristribuloides (Lamarck, 1816) figuram na lista nacional de espécies de invertebrados aquáticos ameaçados de extinção._______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT: We present the results of the studies on biodiversity of Echinodermata (except Holothuroidea) from the Projects "Marine Environmental Evaluation of the Todos os Santos Bay - MAREMBA" (July/August 1996) and "Geoecology of the Benthic Infralitoral Communities of Todos os Santos Bay (BTS), Bahia, Brazil" (1997). The class Ophiuroidea was dominant in samples in terms of abundance and frequency of occurrence, in particular Amphiodia atra Stimpson, 1852, Amphipholis subtilis (Ljungman, 1867), Ophiactislymani Ljungman, 1871and Ophiostigma isocanthum (Say, 1825). The asteroid Oreaster reticulatus (Linnaeus, 1758) is considered vulnerable to human exploration and was scarce during the surveys. Other species found at BTS, such the asteroids Luidia clathrata (Say, 1825) and L. senegalensis (Lamarck, 1816) and the echinoid Eucidaristribuloides (Lamarck, 1816)are included in the national list of threatened invertebrate species

    Hyperfine splitting and isotope shift in the atomic D2D_2 line of 22,23^{22,23}Na and the quadrupole moment of 22^{22}Na

    The hyperfine structure of the D2D_2 optical line in 22^{22}Na and 23^{23}Na has been investigated using high resolution laser spectroscopy of a well-collimated atomic beam. The hyperfine splitting constants AA and BB for the excited 3p3p 2P3/2^2P_{3/2} level for both investigated sodium isotopes have been obtained. They are as follows: A(22)=7.31(4)A(22) = 7.31(4) MHz, B(22)=4.71(28)B(22) = 4.71(28) MHz, A(23)=18.572(24)A(23) = 18.572(24) MHz, B(23)=2.723(55)B(23) = 2.723(55) MHz. With this data, using the high precision MCHF calculations for the electric field gradient at the nucleus, the electric quadrupole moment of 22^{22}Na has been deduced: Qs(22)=+0.185(11)Q_s(22) = + 0.185(11) b. The sign of Qs(22)Q_s(22), determined for the first time, indicates a prolate nuclear deformation. A precise value of the isotope shift 22,23^{22,23}Na in the D2D_2 line has also been obtained
