Participation and deliberation: a case study of readers’ comments to news stories on the Brazilian presidential campaign
The Internet has created new “dialogical spaces” (Oblak, 2005) where issues of common concern can be discussed, serving to democratize the public sphere. As a potential deliberative section and a civic forum, readers’ comments in newspapers’ websites constitute a locus for public debate and ideas exchange provided by the mainstream media. As a case study, this article intends to assess the quality of audience participation in online news sites, by analysing the readers’ comments in the news about the Brazilian presidential campaign (September-November 2010) in the online versions of two Portuguese newspapers

Validation of the Implementation Climate Scale (ICS) in substance use disorder treatment organizations.
BackgroundOne critical factor in the implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) in substance use disorder treatment organizations is an inner organizational context that clearly supports implementation efforts. The Implementation Climate Scale (ICS) has been developed to allow researchers and organizations to assess climate for EBP implementation in health and allied health service organizations. The ICS consists of 18 items and measures six dimensions of implementation climate: focus on EBP, educational support for EBP, recognition for EBP, rewards for EBP, selection for EBP, and selection for openness. The ICS was initially developed in a mental health context; thus, the goal of this study was to provide initial validation of the ICS in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment settings.MethodsConfirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to assess the psychometric functioning of the ICS using survey data from 326 providers in 65 teams in SUD treatment programs. Cronbach's alpha was examined to assess internal consistency of the ICS, and individual and team level construct-based validity was examined by comparing its correlations with service climate, molar climate, and organizational change.ResultsWe found evidence for the reliability, factor structure, and validity of the ICS in SUD services. The psychometric functioning of the ICS in SUD treatment settings was comparable to that found in mental health contexts.ConclusionsThe ICS is a brief and pragmatic tool for researchers to better understand a critical antecedent for implementation effectiveness in SUD treatment and for organizational leaders in SUD treatment organizations to evaluate the extent to which providers perceive that their organization supports EBP implementation
Statistical analysis was applied to the study of Oukaïmeden rock art as a way to obtain chronological information. By means of correspondence analysis we identified trends in the representation of the various individual motifs in the valley rock art. Subsequently we analyzed recurrent associations and overlappings, which led us to the last scale of analysis: the dating of rock art stations.
The portuguese news industry’s perspectives and roles on the making of active citizens: readers’ skills to comment on the news
This article investigates the news industry’s perceptions
of letters to the editor and online comments in
the context of the digital world and of the challenges
journalists face. Using a sample of 11 semistructured
interviews with journalists and ombudsmen
in Portugal, we analyse the news industry’s views
on readers’ ability to comment on the news and
on the industry’s possible contributions to creating
critical and engaged publics. The interviewees express
concern about harmful behaviours in online
environments and point to differences in online and
offline contexts of participation. The results, however,
do not reveal a proactive attitude in the news industry
as the news professionals focus on their daily
work activities as a form of media education and argue
that schools and the public, instead, should take
the lead in these activities. To support their statements,
the interviewees cite factors such as the possibilities
of digital culture, the promotion of media
education, the need to foster a reciprocal relation
between learning and the existing forms of journalism

ABSTRACT
The cultural journalism is a very private area within the journalism in general, as an area of confluence between reporters, experts and intellectuals, becoming therefore distinct from other traditional forms of journalistic production (Basso, 2006; GADINI, 2006; Harries; WAHL-JORGENSEN, 2007; RIVERA, 2003; Tubau, 1990). Given the dearth of academic research on this subject in Portugal and taking music journalism as a case study, this article is intended to verify to what extent the rules of journalistic writing and agreements resulting from the consolidation of modern journalism (Chalaby, 1996) are present in parts of informative nature, selecting the corpus four Portuguese newspapers during the year 2010, and mobilizing some categories used by critical discourse analysis, qualitative methodology. The analysis of the parts indicates the fluidity of boundaries of the discourse of music journalism (between information, interpretation and criticism) and the relative distance of the formal criteria of conventional informative journalistic writing.
