Síntesis y caracterización de un biomaterial para su uso en ingeniería de tejidos de piel
La ingeniería de tejidos constituye una disciplina relativamente nueva y un campo de investigación y desarrollo interdisciplinario que aplica los conocimientos de la bioingeniería, química, física, biología etc. para resolver problemas químicos y quirúrgicos asociados a la pérdida de tejido o al fallo funcional de órganos (San Román et al., 2000; Naderi et al., 2011). Esta área de conocimiento busca proporcionar una nueva solución a los problemas de daño o pérdida tisular, mediante el reemplazo o restauración de tejido. Más aún se aspira a recobrar la función de un órgano y en algunos casos su reconstrucción parcial o total, con estructuras que contengan poblaciones específicas de células. La meta fundamental de la ingeniería de tejidos es desarrollar sustitutos (biológicos o sintéticos) que restauren, mantengan o mejoren la función del tejido perdido o lesionado por trauma o enfermedad. (Marler et al., 1998; Landínez et al., 2010). Esta nueva área de estudio permitirá crear estrategias que permitan la sustitución del tejido dañado, por un tejido diseñado y construido para satisfacer las funciones y las necesidades de cada paciente

Clinical characteristics of wild-type transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis: disproving myths.
Wild-type transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTRwt) is mostly considered a disease predominantly of elderly male, characterized by concentric LV hypertrophy, preserved LVEF, and low QRS voltages. We sought to describe the characteristics of a large cohort of ATTRwt patients to better define the disease.
Clinical findings of consecutive ATTRwt patients diagnosed at 2 centres were reviewed. ATTRwt was diagnosed histologically or non-invasively (LV hypertrophy ≥12 mm, intense cardiac uptake at 99mTc-DPD scintigraphy and AL exclusion). Mutations in TTR were excluded in all cases. The study cohort comprised 108 patients (78.6 ± 8 years); 67 (62%) diagnosed invasively and 41 (38%) non-invasively. Twenty patients (19%) were females. An asymmetric hypertrophy pattern was observed in 25 (23%) patients. Mean LVEF was 52 ± 14%, with 39 patients (37%) showing a LVEF < 50%. Atrial fibrillation (56%) and a pseudo-infarct pattern (63%) were the commonest ECG findings. Only 22 patients fulfilled QRS low-voltage criteria while 10 showed LV hypertrophy on ECG. Although heart failure was the most frequent profile leading to diagnosis (68%), 7% of individuals presented with atrioventricular block and 11% were diagnosed incidentally. Almost one third (35; 32%) were previously misdiagnosed.
The clinical spectrum of ATTRwt is heterogeneous and differs from the classic phenotype: women are affected in a significant proportion; asymmetric LV hypertrophy and impaired LVEF are not rare and only a minority have low QRS voltages. Clinicians should be aware of the broad clinical spectrum of ATTRwt to correctly identify an entity for which a number of disease-modifying treatments are under investigation.This work was supported in part by the Spanish Society of Cardiology

Agroforestry is paying off – Economic evaluation of ecosystem services in European landscapes with and without agroforestry systems
The study assessed the economic performance of marketable ecosystem services (ES) (biomass production) and non-marketable ecosystem services and dis-services (groundwater, nutrient loss, soil loss, carbon sequestration, pollination deficit) in 11 contrasting European landscapes dominated by agroforestry land use compared to business as usual agricultural practice. The productivity and profitability of the farming activities and the associated ES were quantified using environmental modelling and economic valuation. After accounting for labour and machinery costs the financial value of the outputs of Mediterranean agroforestry systems tended to be greater than the corresponding agricultural system; but in Atlantic and Continental regions the agricultural system tended to be more profitable. However, when economic values for the associated ES were included, the relative profitability of agroforestry increased. Agroforestry landscapes: (i) were associated to reduced externalities of pollution from nutrient and soil losses, and (ii) generated additional benefits from carbon capture and storage and thus generated an overall higher economic gain. Our findings underline how a market system that includes the values of broader ES would result in land use change favouring multifunctional agroforestry. Imposing penalties for dis-services or payments for services would reflect their real world prices and would make agroforestry a more financially profitable system
Machine learning on difference image analysis: A comparison of methods for transient detection
We present a comparison of several Difference Image Analysis (DIA) techniques, in combination with Machine Learning (ML) algorithms, applied to the identification of optical transients associated to gravitational wave events. Each technique is assessed based on the scoring metrics of Precision, Recall, and their harmonic mean F1, measured on the DIA results as standalone techniques, and also in the results after the application of ML algorithms, on transient source injections over simulated and real data. These simulations cover a wide range of instrumental configurations, as well as a variety of scenarios of observation conditions, by exploring a multi dimensional set of relevant parameters, allowing us to extract general conclusions related to the identification of transient astrophysical events. The newest subtraction techniques, and particularly the methodology published in Zackay et al., (2016) are implemented on an Open Source Python package, named properimage, suitable for many other astronomical image analyses. This together, with the ML libraries we describe, provides an effective transient detection software pipeline. Here we study the effects of the different ML techniques, and the relative feature importances for classification of transient candidates, and propose an optimal combined strategy. This constitutes the basic elements of pipelines that could be applied in searches of electromagnetic counterparts to GW sources.Fil: Sánchez, Bruno Orlando. Search for Charginos with a Small Mass Difference with the Lightest Supersymmetric Particle at \sqrt{s} = 189 GeV
A search for charginos nearly mass-degenerate with the lightest
supersymmetric particle is performed using the 176 pb^-1 of data collected at
189 GeV in 1998 with the L3 detector. Mass differences between the chargino and
the lightest supersymmetric particle below 4 GeV are considered. The presence
of a high transverse momentum photon is required to single out the signal from
the photon-photon interaction background. No evidence for charginos is found
and upper limits on the cross section for chargino pair production are set. For
the first time, in the case of heavy scalar leptons, chargino mass limits are
obtained for any \tilde{\chi}^{+-}_1 - \tilde{\chi}^0_1 mass difference
Search for Low Scale Gravity Effects in e+e- Collisions at LEP
Recent theories propose that quantum gravity effects may be observable at LEP
energies via gravitons that couple to Standard Model particles and propagate
into extra spatial dimensions. The associated production of a graviton and a
photon is searched for as well as the effects of virtual graviton exchange in
the processes: e+e- -> gamma gamma, ZZ, WW, mu mu, tau tau, qq and ee No
evidence for this new interaction is found in the data sample collected by the
L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies up to 183 GeV. Limits close to 1
TeV on the scale of this new scenario of quantum gravity are set
