Braverman is considered an unquestionable reference of Marxist labour process. The objective of this paper is to show that despite Braverman's undeniable achievements he forsakes the classical Marxist notions related to work organization, i. e. simple cooperation, manufacture and large-scale industry and replaces them with the notion of Taylorism. We also intend to show that because of this abandonment, Braverman cannot explain properly how the deskilling tendency operates in different historical periods, and in distinct industry branches. Finally, we try to demonstrate that those Marxist concepts neglected by Braverman are especially useful to understand labor unrest related to job organization. Braverman overvalues the incidence of labor fragmentation and direct forms of control and disregards the impact of mechanization achieved with the emergence of Large-scale industry and the new forms of control associated with it. Whereas Braverman?s allegedly Marxist orthodoxy is considered responsible for this, in fact, exactly the opposite can be asserted: the weaknesses of the otherwise noteworthy work of Harry Braverman are grounded in his relinquishment of some crucial Marxist concepts. We state that labor processes conventionally considered Taylorist or Fordist can be reconceptualized in Marxist classic terms allowing a better understanding of the dynamic of conflicts regarding labor process.

Behavioral-based circular formation control for robot swarms

This paper focuses on coordinating a robot swarm orbiting a convex path without collisions among the individuals. The individual robots lack braking capabilities and can only adjust their courses while maintaining their constant but different speeds. Instead of controlling the spatial relations between the robots, our formation control algorithm aims to deploy a dense robot swarm that mimics the behavior of tornado schooling fish. To achieve this objective safely, we employ a combination of a scalable overtaking rule, a guiding vector field, and a control barrier function with an adaptive radius to facilitate smooth overtakes. The decision-making process of the robots is distributed, relying only on local information. Practical applications include defensive structures or escorting missions with the added resiliency of a swarm without a centralized command. We provide a rigorous analysis of the proposed strategy and validate its effectiveness through numerical simulations involving a high density of unicycles.Comment: 7 pages, ICRA submission 202

The Reverse Gender Gap in Volunteer Activities: Does Culture Matter?

    Get PDF
Women take on 57% (men: 43%) of all volunteering globally (UN 2018). In this paper, we follow an epidemiological approach to explore the possible role of culture in determining this reverse gender gap in the time devoted to volunteer activities. To that end, we merge data from the American Time Use Survey for the years 2006–2019 and the Gender Gap Index (GGI) of the World Economic Forum 2021. We use a sample of early-arrival first- and second-generation immigrants who live in the United States. Our empirical approach rests on the fact that all these individuals have grown up under the same host country’s labor market, regulations, laws, and institutions but differ in their cultural heritage. Thus, in this setting, gender discrepancies in the time devoted to volunteer activities can be interpreted as the effect of culture. We find that more gender-equal norms in the country of origin are associated with women devoting less time to volunteer activities relative to men. We further analyze the channels shaping the culture from the country of ancestry and the existence of horizontal (within-communities) transmission of culture. Our results are robust to the use of different subsamples and to the inclusion of demographic and socio-economic controls

Overlooked gall-inducing moths revisited, with the description of Andescecidium parrai gen. et sp. n. and Oliera saizi sp. n. from Chile (Lepidoptera, Cecidosidae)

There are still many gall systems associated with larvae of Lepidoptera in which the true gall-inducers have not been identified to species. Reports on misidentification of gall inducers have been recurrent for these galls, particularly in complex gall-systems that may include inquilines, kleptoparasites, and cecidophages, among other feeding guilds such as predators and parasitoid wasps. Here we describe and illustrate the adults, larvae, pupae and galls, based on light and scanning microscopy, of Andescecidium parrai gen. et sp. n. and Oliera saizi sp. n., two sympatric cecidosid moths that are associated with Schinus polygamus (Cav.) Cabrera (Anacardiaceae) in central Chile. Adults, immatures, and galls of the former did not conform to any known cecidosid genus. Galls of A. parrai are external, spherical, and conspicuous, being known for more than one century. However, their induction has been mistakenly associated with either unidentified Coleoptera (original description) or Oliera argentinana Br糨es (recently), a distinct cecidosid species with distribution restricted to the eastern Andes. Galls of O. saizi had been undetected, as they are inconspicuous. They occur under the bark within swollen stems, and may occur on the same plant, adjacent to those of A. parrai. We also propose a time-calibrated phylogeny using sequences from mitochondrial and nuclear loci, including specimens of the new proposed taxa. Thus in addition to clarifying the taxonomy of the Chilean cecidosid species we also tested their monophyly in comparison to congeneric species and putative specimens of all genera of Neotropical and African cecidosids.Fil: Silva, Gabriela T.. Bisphenol A degradation and mineralization by the Fenton and the Photo-Fenton process

    Get PDF
The performance of the Fenton and photo-Fenton processes for the degradation and mineralization of Bisphenol A was investigat-ed. A parameterized kinetic model was suitably fitted to the exper-imental data in order to determine two performance parameters related to the global equilibrium conversion and kinetic rate of the process. Further analysis allowed selecting those process condi-tions (iron and hydrogen peroxide load) that maximize the process performance. The Fenton process clearly proved to more efficient-ly degrade Bisphenol A under irradiation. The highest conversion rates were achieved with only the stoichiometric hydrogen perox-ide load and the appropriate iron load (i.e. total Bisphenol A elimination and 90 % TOC decay).Postprint (published version

Energy-Aware Planning-Scheduling for Autonomous Aerial Robots

In this paper, we present an online planning-scheduling approach for battery-powered autonomous aerial robots. The approach consists of simultaneously planning a coverage path and scheduling onboard computational tasks. We further derive a novel variable coverage motion robust to airborne constraints and an empirically motivated energy model. The model includes the energy contribution of the schedule based on an automatic computational energy modeling tool. Our experiments show how an initial flight plan is adjusted online as a function of the available battery, accounting for uncertainty. Our approach remedies possible in-flight failure in case of unexpected battery drops, e.g., due to adverse atmospheric conditions, and increases the overall fault tolerance.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, IROS'2

Expression of bladder cancer‑associated glycans in murine tumor cell lines

    Get PDF
The characterization of murine cell lines is of great importance in order to identify preclinical models that could resemble human diseases. Aberrant glycosylation includes the loss, excessive or novel expression of glycans and the appearance of truncated structures. MB49 and MB49-I are currently the only two murine cell lines available for the development of preclinical bladder cancer models. The glycans Lewis X (LeX), Sialyl lewis X (SLeX) and Sialyl Tn (STn) have previously been associated with aggressiveness, dissemination and poor prognosis in human bladder cancer, additionally N-glycolyl GM3 (NGcGM3) is a neo-antigen expressed in many types of tumors; however, to the best of our knowledge, its expression has not previously been assessed in this type of cancer. Taking into account the relevance of glycans in tumor biology and considering that they can act as targets of therapies and biomarkers, the present study evaluated the expression of LeX, SLeX, STn and NGcGM3 in MB49 and MB49-I cells, in different growth conditions such as mono-layer cultures, three-dimensional multicellular spheroids and mouse heterotopic and orthotopic tumors. The expression of LeX was not detected in either cell line, whereas SLeX was expressed in monolayers, spheroids and orthotopic tumors of both cell lines. STn was only identified in MB49 monolayers and spheroids. There are no reports concerning the expression of NGcGM3 in human or murine bladder cancer. In our hands, MB49 and MB49-I expressed this ganglioside in all the growth conditions evaluated. The assessment of its expression in cancer cell lines and patient tumors is of great importance, considering the relevance of this ganglioside in tumor biology. The data obtained by the present study demonstrates that glycan expression may be substantially altered depending on the growth conditions, highlighting the importance of the characterization of murine cancer models. To the best of our knowledge, the present study is the first to examine the expression of cancer-associated glycans, in the two murine cell lines available for the development of preclinical studies in bladder cancer.Fil: Alberto, Marina.
