    Breast implant illness: a step forward in understanding this complex entity and the impact of social media

    Introduction. The number of implant-related complaints is constantly rising, a phenomenon probably accentuated by the extensive use of social media by patients. Material and method. A group of signs and symptoms considered to be caused by mammary implants is known as “Breast Implant Illness”. This paper analyzes the increased number of posts by patients on social media in which they describe their symptoms, their disappointment with the decision of using breast implants, and the beneficial effects of explantation. The case of a patient with breast implants who visited our clinic is reported here. The patient complained of two palpable masses, located in the left axilla and in the superolateral quadrant of the left breast. The pathophysiological mechanism by which lymphadenopathy occurred after a long period of time remains uncertain. Discussion. A review of the literature was conducted to identify the underlying causes of implant-related complaints, allowing evaluation of the presence of local complications, cancer with large anaplastic cells, and autoimmune diseases. The possibility of a somatization effect has also been considered. Conclusions. Plastic surgeons must remain the best source of information, taking on the role of educating the patient in order to better understand this condition

    Genetic Evidence of Expansion by Passive Transport of Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti in Eastern Argentina

    Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti (Linnaeus) (Diptera: Culicidae) is the principal vector of the yellow fever virus, the five dengue virus serotypes (DENV-1 to DENV-5), chikungunya virus, Zika virus, and several types of encephalitis [1–3]. The behavior of this species is synanthropic and anthropophilic, being the culicid most closely associated with human populations [4]. The incidence of dengue has increased 30-fold over the last 50 years; according to the World Health Organization, up to 50–100 million infections occur each year in over 100 endemic countries, and at least one half of the world’s population has risk of being infected with dengue virus [5]. Chikungunya virus has been responsible for over 2 million human infections during the past decade and is currently moving to subtropical latitudes as well as to the western hemisphere. Up until April 2015, there have been 1,379,788 suspected cases of this disease in the Caribbean islands, Latin America, and the United States. This expansion into novel habitats brings unique risks associated with further spread of the virus and the disease it causes [6]. On the other hand, there are about 200,000 cases of yellow fever each year worldwide responsible for about 30,000 deaths, most of them from Africa. Zika virus is an emerging mosquito-borne virus, with outbreaks in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific between 2007 and 2014. Since 2015, there has been an increase in reports of ZIKV infection in the Americas, with Brazil being the most affected country, with 534 confirmed cases and 72,062 suspected cases between 2015 and 2016 [7]. All these viruses and the mosquito vector A. aegypti present in the Americas represent a serious risk. So far, in 2016, 39,926 dengue cases produced by DENV-1 and DENV-4 serotypes and 319 autochthonous cases of chikungunya fever have been reported in Argentina. According to the last census, Argentina has approximately 40 million people (National Institute of Statistics and Censuses of Argentina [INDEC], Census 2010), and over 38 million live in areas suitable for the transmission of dengue and chikungunya viruses [8]. Moreover, although there were 22 imported cases of Zika and 24 autochthonous cases confirmed in Argentina, there is a high incidence of cases in Brazil, and besides that, there is an internal circulation of the virus in the neighboring countries Brazil, Paraguay, and Bolivia [7,8], in addition to the constant expansion of the mosquito vector.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse

    StarHorse: A Bayesian tool for determining stellar masses, ages, distances, and extinctions for field stars

    Understanding the formation and evolution of our Galaxy requires accurate distances, ages and chemistry for large populations of field stars. Here we present several updates to our spectro-photometric distance code, that can now also be used to estimate ages, masses, and extinctions for individual stars. Given a set of measured spectro-photometric parameters, we calculate the posterior probability distribution over a given grid of stellar evolutionary models, using flexible Galactic stellar-population priors. The code (called {\tt StarHorse}) can acommodate different observational datasets, prior options, partially missing data, and the inclusion of parallax information into the estimated probabilities. We validate the code using a variety of simulated stars as well as real stars with parameters determined from asteroseismology, eclipsing binaries, and isochrone fits to star clusters. Our main goal in this validation process is to test the applicability of the code to field stars with known {\it Gaia}-like parallaxes. The typical internal precision (obtained from realistic simulations of an APOGEE+Gaia-like sample) are 8%\simeq 8\% in distance, 20%\simeq 20\% in age,6 \simeq 6\ % in mass, and 0.04\simeq 0.04 mag in AVA_V. The median external precision (derived from comparisons with earlier work for real stars) varies with the sample used, but lies in the range of [0,2]%\simeq [0,2]\% for distances, [12,31]%\simeq [12,31]\% for ages, [4,12]%\simeq [4,12]\% for masses, and 0.07\simeq 0.07 mag for AVA_V.     COVID-19 outbreak impact on plastic surgery residents from Romania

    The COVID-19 outbreak triggered a global crisis with long-term effects on people’s daily lives. It has altered surgical practice and education and imposed major changes in healthcare systems and resources. In order to analyze the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on Romanian Plastic Surgery residents, we carried out an anonymous questionnaire through Google forms. Survey items addressed aspects such as how the pandemic has affected their surgical practice, their exposure to the virus, and the protective measures that have been implemented to minimize risk. Among other results, our study found that nearly 1 in 5 respondents had contact with a coronavirus patient, that most of the patients were tested at admission, mostly using RT-PCR, and that various combinations of personal protective equipment had been used. Most participants also felt that their surgical training has been negatively affected, despite attendance at online courses and webinars. Although the pandemic has brought significant changes to the daily lives of residents and to the residency training, the Plastic Surgery community has been brought closer than ever and reminded that, through unified efforts, such obstacles can be overcome

    Se planteó evaluar presencia de indicadores de abuso sexual en la infancia (ASI) con indicadores de Boscato en los test de figura humana de niñas con y sin antecedentes de ASI en la Cátedra de Psiquiatría del Hospital de Clínicas. Estudio exploratorio, de corte transversal. Se realizó un análisis de test gráficos de figura humana en 16 pacientes: 8 con antecedentes de ASI y 8 sin ASI. Intensidad de la agresión: Descarga motora: en 6 del total de 8 pacientes con ASI, contra sin hallazgo en pacientes sin ASI. Concepción de sí mismo: percepción de estar traumatizado, en 2 de los 8 pacientes con ASI y en ninguna sin ASI. Micrografía: no presente en las pacientes con ASI en cambio sí en 1 de las pacientes sin ASI. Negación: en 2 del total de pacientes con ASI y en ningún paciente sin ASI. Vulnerabilidad (necesidad de defensa): en 6 del total de pacientes con ASI y en ningún paciente sin ASI.     Tolerance to lipopolysaccharide promotes an enhanced neutrophil extracellular traps formation leading to a more efficient bacterial clearance in mice

    Tolerance to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) constitutes a stress adaptation, in which a primary contact with LPS results in a minimal response when a second exposure with the same stimulus occurs. However, active important defence mechanisms are mounted during the tolerant state. Our aim was to assess the contribution of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) in the clearance of bacterial infection in a mouse model of tolerance to LPS. After tolerance was developed, we investigated in vivo different mechanisms of bacterial clearance. The elimination of a locally induced polymicrobial challenge was more efficient in tolerant mice both in the presence or absence of local macrophages. This was related to a higher number of PMN migrating to the infectious site as a result of an increased number of PMN from the marginal pool with higher chemotactic capacity, not because of differences in their phagocytic activity or reactive species production. In vivo, neutrophils extracellular trap (NET) destruction by nuclease treatment abolished the observed increased clearance in tolerant but not in control mice. In line with this finding, in vitro NETs formation was higher in PMN from tolerant animals. These results indicate that the higher chemotactic response from an increased PMN marginal pool and the NETs enhanced forming capacity are the main mechanisms mediating bacterial clearance in tolerant mice. To sum up, far from being a lack of response, tolerance to LPS causes PMN priming effects which favour distant and local anti-infectious responses.Fil: Landoni, Verónica Inés.     Mecanismos de accion de Trichoderma spp. para el biocontrol de la septoriosis del trigo

    El objetivo de esta investigación fue conocer los posibles mecanismos biológico desencadenados por Trichoderma spp como biocontrolador de la Septoriosis del trigo. El aislamiento de las especies de Trichoderma spp se realizó a partir de suelos cultivados con trigo de La Plata. Se obtuvieron y caracterizaron 30 cepas. Para los bioensayos en invernáculo, se realizaron los siguientes tratamientos: plantas control; plantas inoculadas con S. trítici; semillas de trigo “pelleteadas” con Trichoderma spp y semillas de trigo “pelleteadas” con Trichoderma spp y posteriormente inoculadas con S. trítici. A los 21 días de la inoculación, en la primera hoja de cada planta se registró el porcentaje de necrosis y de picnidios desarrollado. De aquellas cepas que demostraron mejor efecto biocontrolador se realizaron pruebas de la actividad antifúngicas del fluido proteolítico intercelular y el peso seco de las raíces y de la parte aérea. Los resultados obtenidos indican que las cepas 2, 4, 5 y 8 produjeron tanto una reducción del área necrosada como una disminución de la superficie cubierta con picnidios. Por lo tanto se las señala como cepas con un potencial biocontrolador frente a la enfermedad. A estas cepas se les investigó el mecanismo de acción. Las cepas 8 y 2 demostraron una elevada actividad proteolítica lo que indicaría que estarían relacionadas con un aumento en la resistencia sistémica inducida en la planta. La cepa 5 aumentó el peso seco aéreo y la 4 el peso seco de la raíz, produciendo plantas más robustas y como consecuencia la reducción de la enfermedad.In the present work, experiments were carried out to determine the possible mechanisms of action of isolates of Trichoderma spp as a biocontrol agent of leaf blotch of wheat. The Trichoderma spp. isolates were coming from soil cultivated with wheat in La Plata area. Thirty isolates were characterized. For the greenhouse bioassay the following treatments were done: control plants, plants inoculated with S. trítici, wheat seeds pelleted with Trichoderma spp. and wheat seed pelleted with Trichoderma spp and inoculated with S. trítici. After 21 days of inoculation, in the first leaf the necrotic area and pycnidial coverage were evaluated. The leaf apoplast antifungal proteolytic activity and dry weight of aerial parts and roots was measured in plants treated with the strains that demonstrated the best behaviour as biocontrol agents. The results showed that the strains 2, 4, 5 y 8 decreased significantly tne necrotic area en the pycnidial coverage. Thus, this strains have biocontrol activity against the disease. The mechanism of action of those strains were investigated. Plants grown from seed coated with 8 and 2 isolates of Trichoderma spp. demostrated an increased antifungal proteolytic activity, it could be related with sistemic induced resistance in plants. On the other hand, The strains 4 and 5 they produced an increase of dry weight of roots and aerial parts respectively producing plant more robust and as a consequence the disease reduction

Here we investigate the role of SAP in antifungal resistance. Apcs-/- mice show enhanced susceptibility to A. fumigatus infection. Murine and human SAP bound conidia, activate the complement cascade and enhance phagocytosis by neutrophils. Apcs-/- mice are defective in vivo in terms of recruitment of neutrophils and phagocytosis in the lungs. Opsonic activity of SAP is dependent on the classical pathway of complement activation. In immunosuppressed mice, SAP administration protects hosts against A. fumigatus infection and death. In the context of a study of hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation, genetic variation in the human APCS gene is associated with susceptibility to invasive pulmonary aspergillosis.
