The effect of phytostabilization on Zn speciation in a dredged contaminated sediment using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence, EXAFS spectroscopy, and principal components analysis
Quantitative and qualitative analysis of hydrosoluble organic matter in bitumen leachates
Bitumen is currently used as an embedding matrix for low and intermediate level
radioactive waste disposal in deep sediments. High impermeability and a great
resistance to most chemicals are the two main properties sought. Indeed, the generation
of water-soluble organic complexing agents could affect the integrity of the wasteform
due to an increase of radionuclide solubility. Therefore, the aim of this study is the
quantitative and qualitative characterisation of soluble organic matter in bitumen
leachates. Different conditions of leaching solutions were tested such as various pHs,
ionic strengths and S/V ratios), in order to simulate the expected deep environment
of bitumen waste disposal. In water, at neutral pH, the amount of soluble organic matter
released is very low. However, the amount of soluble total organic carbon released
increased with pH. Nonetheless, in alkaline solutions (pH 13.5), the effect of the ionic
strength leads to a decrease of soluble organic matter released. Several classes of
organic compounds such as naphthalene, alcohols, linear carboxylic acids, aromatics,

Molecular hydrogen from water radiolysis as an energy source for bacterial growth in a basin containing irradiating waste
International audienceAlthough being deionized, filtered and therefore normally deeply oligotrophic, the water from a basin containing irradiating waste presented relatively high bacterial concentrations (ca 10 5 cfu ml À1) and biofilm development at its surface and on the walls. This water was characterized by a high concentration of molecular H 2 due to water radiolysis, while its electrochemical potential was around +400 mV due the presence of dissolved O 2 and active oxygen compounds. This combination of H 2 availability and of an oxidant environment is completely original and not described in nature. From surface and wall biofilms, we enumerated the auto-trophic populations (%10 5 bacteria ml À1) able to grow in presence of H 2 as energy source and CO 2 as carbon source, and we isolated the most abundant ones among cultivable bacteria. They efficiently grew on a mineral medium, in the presence of H 2 , O 2 and CO 2 , the presence of the three gases being indispensable. Two strains were selected and identified using their rrs gene sequence as Rals-tonia sp. GGLH002 and Burkholderia sp. GGLH005. In pure culture and using isotope exchange between hydrogen and deuterium, we demonstrated that these strains are able to oxidize hydrogen as energy source, using oxygen as an electron acceptor, and to use carbon dioxide as carbon source. These chemoautotroph hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria probably represent the pioneer bacterial populations in this basin and could be primary producers in the bacterial community
Identification of undescribed medium-chain acylcarnitines present in urine of patients with propionic and methylmalonic acidemias.
In urine of patients with propionyl-CoA carboxylase deficiency or with methylmalonic acidemia, carnitine esters of 2-methyl-branched fatty acids of all chain lengths between 4 and 9 atoms of carbon were identified during the acute phase of the diseases. The chemical structure of these compounds was obtained by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of their fatty acid moieties in their free and picolinyl ester forms. We suggest mechanisms for the biosynthesis of these branched fatty acids, and their accumulation in urine during episodes of caloric imbalance
Identification of new medium-chain acylcarnitines present in normal human urine
Analysis of urinary medium-chain acylcarnitines extracted on C18 cartridges and gas chromatography mass spectrometry of their fatty acid moieties as picolinyl esters allowed the determination of the chemical structure of previously unidentified acylcarnitines in normal human urine, These are the 2,6-dimethylheptanoyl-, the 2,6-dimethyl-5-heptenoyl-, and the trans- and cis-3,4-methylene heptanoylcarnitines, also named 3-cyclopropane octanoylcarnitines. Assessment of the structure of these cyclopropane. derivatives was obtained by H-1 and C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, In addition, other acylcarnitines were tentatively identified. Identification of new medium-chain acylcarnitines present in urine of a patient with medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency
Previously undescribed medium-chain acylcarnitines were identified in a urine sample from a patient with medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency. These are the 4-methylvaleryl, 4- and 5-methylhexanoyl, 6-methyl-heptanoyl-, 6-methyloctanoyl-, 4,5-dimethylhexanoyl- and 4,7-decadienoylcarnitines. Their chemical structures were obtained by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of their fatty acid moieties as picolinyl esters
The effect of phytostabilization on Zn speciation in a dredged contaminated sediment using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence, EXAFS spectroscopy, and principal components analysis.
International audienceThe maintenance of waterways generates large amounts of dredged sediments, witch are deposited on adjacent land surfaces. These sediments are often rich in metal contaminants and present a risk to the local environment
