Schadenfreude is higher in real-life situations compared to hypothetical scenarios

Schadenfreude (i.e., the pleasure derived from another's misfortune) has been widely studied by having participants imagine how they would feel in hypothetical scenarios describing another person's pain or misfortune. However, research on affective forecasting shows that self-judgments of emotions are inaccurate in hypothetical situations. Here we show a study in which we first presented a hypothetical schadenfreude situation and few months later, due to an exceptional circumstance, the situation turned out to happen in reality. This fortuitous circumstance allowed us to compare people's imagined emotional reactions with their actual feelings. Results showed that schadenfreude was higher in the real situation than in the hypothetical one. More importantly, participants used different proxies to predict their emotional reaction: while out-group dislike served as a proxy of schadenfreude in both types of scenario, the degree of in-group identification also increased schadenfreude in those who had experienced the real event, arguably a mechanism to promote positive self-evaluation. MODEL REDUCTION METHODS IN OPTION PRICING

In this work we introduce the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD)approach to the valuation of contingent claims for one–dimensional price models.First, we present the POD in the context of an abstract Hilbert space and we givean application for the numerical pricing of Double Barrier Options. In a finitedimension setting, we show the model reduction method for Finite Differenceschemes of implicit type. Studies on reproduction of the mullet Mugil platanus Günther, 1880 (Actinopterygii, Mugilidae) from the Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon, Argentina: Similarities and differences with related species

The aim of the present study is to provide the first results on the reproductive biology of Mugil platanus, from the Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon (Argentina). To address this topic, we employed mainly female gonads, at both microscopic and macroscopic levels. The following stages of oocyte development were observed: (A) oogonias, (B) primary growth oocyte, (C) cortical alveolus stage, (D) yolked oocytes, and (E) atretic follicle. Also five of the seven stages of gonad maturity were macro and microscopically stated. The potential fecundity ranged between 1,002,026 and 2,548,769 yolked oocytes, with a mean of around 1,800,000 oocytes. The length at first maturity (L 50) was 450.6 total length (TL) and 367.7 standard length (SL) for females, 436.3 TL and 354.9 SL for males, showing a late sexual maturity for both sexes. Seasonal changes in gonadosomatic index (GSI) of females were observed. The mean GSI was ≤1 during six months of the year (January, June-October). Two modes in the ovarian maturation were observed, the most important in April-May and a secondary one in November-December. Both modes, correlated with the CPUE values, are indicative of the mullet migration from the coastal lagoon towards the sea for spawning. Differences and similarities have been found between Mugil platanus and other mugilid species (Mugil cephalus, Mugil curema, Liza aurata, Liza abu, Liza argentea, Myxus elongatus, and Valamugil cunnesius), from the reproductive point of view. The length at first maturity obtained for M. platanus is higher than in other mugilid species and when a relationship between maximum length and L 50 is established the percentage corresponding to Mugil platanus is 75%, while the others range between 50 and 61%.Fil: González Castro, Mariano. Corrección de metritis crónica en vacas lecheras comparando el uso de cefapirina y cefapirina + prostaglandina d- cloprostenol

El estudio fue realizado con el objeto de contribuir al estudio de la metritis en vacas lecheras. Para el diseño del presente estudio se utilizaron 20 vacas que presentaron metritis 21 días post parto, las cuales se distribuyeron en 2 grupos A y B. El grupo A fue sometido a lavado intrauterino con cefapirina y al grupo B se le realizó un lavado intrauterino con cefapirina más la administración intramuscular de cloprostenol. Las vacas tratadas fueron examinadas a los 8 días post tratamiento para evaluar la efectividad. Se utilizó un espéculo vaginal para observar si existía secreción purulenta, abertura del cérvix y color de la mucosa. Se observó que la efectividad de los dos tratamientos es similar bajo las condiciones de campo, por lo tanto se considera que una tasa de efectividad del 80% es adecuada, sin embargo el tratamiento de cefapirina más prostaglandina dcloprostenol al tener una efectividad del 100% sería el tratamiento a elegir. El tratamiento combinando cefapirina más prostaglandina d-cloprostenol es de 1.85 veces más costoso que utilizar solo cefapirina pero al someter al análisis los costos del tratamiento de cefapirina más prostaglandina d-cloprostenol y el tratamiento con cefapirina dio un resultado de Tasa Marginal de Retorno del 72.5% lo que indica que por cada quetzal invertido se recuperan Q0.72. Siendo la Tasa de Retorno Mínima Aceptable del 50%, es recomendable aplicar el tratamiento combinado para la corrección de metritis crónica post-parto en vacas lechera

Epistemología como ética: ¿romper con Freud gracias a Fuentes?

A critical review of the crucial Freudian change in the general explanation of hysterics and neurosis that took place in 1897 would not let us assess in a definite way the epistemic import of Psychoanalysis. However some difficulties that appear in Freud’s works, related for instance to the no-contradiction principle, demand that we make an epistemic and a moral decision. But only if we wanted to maintain the critical attitude that modern science and philosophy have brought to us, a decision that would allow us to see Freudianism as a faith and as “a testimony of a man in our age”.Un examen crítico del crucial cambio freudiano en la explicación de la histeria y de las neurosis en general que tuvo lugar en 1897 no permitiría una evaluación unívoca ni definitiva de la significación del Psicoanálisis, pero determinadas dificultades que se muestran en los trabajos de Freud, como por ejemplo la posición que adoptarían frente al principio de no-contradicción, exigirían de nosotros, si queremos mantener la actitud crítica que nos habrían aportado la ciencia y el pensamiento modernos, una decisión en sentido tanto epistemológico como ético, decisión que nos permite contemplar el freudismo como fe y “testimonio del hombre actual”
