The Netherlands was pioneer in incorporating ecological concern to its aims and politics. By 1972 the Dutch government spread the message of responsible and ecologic production and consumption, wheras Spain was still far from considering sustainability as a main concern. The way that both countries have followed is worth studying and comparing. In this research, the status of the construction sector in Spain and the Netherlands will be analysed, by using indices. Both countries enjoy a similar HDI (Human Development Index), and differences, among others, in their constructive development, as the results show. Considering sustainability as a compound result of environmental, social and economical matters, diverse indices related to these aspects have been searched for in order to locate construction in its real context. This way, proper comparisons can be established, which will help to learn and improve, both in the general aims and in the process of construction. The aims will be analysed by comparing existing and possible situations. The processes will be analysed by indicating the areas whose indices should be established and studied in more depth, and detecting as well the weaknesses of knowledge that should be improved. As for the temporal development, the indices selected were those related to sustainability in the different stages of the life cycle of a building; from the pre-design until the demolition of it. Where necessary, trends have been defined by presenting temporary cycles. The indices have been obtained from several official organisations considering the availability of data about both countries as for concept, time and reliability. This is the case of institutes, universities, congresses and research centres. In some cases, the sources of the information are common to both countries: EU statistics. All conclusions establish forcefully, how (in a comparable framework, where differences are not essential) there is a space of improvement and learning that can be shared. It also identifies which areas should be considered as those requiring priority attentions and the trend towards a likely common factor

The promoter activity of human Mfn2 depends on Sp1 in vascular smooth muscle cells

AIMS: Mitofusin-2 (Mfn2) expression is dysregulated in vascular proliferative disorders and its overexpression attenuates the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and neointimal lesion development after balloon angioplasty. We sought to gain insight into the mechanisms that control Mfn2 expression in VSMCs. METHODS AND RESULTS: We cloned and characterized 2 kb of the 5'-flanking region of the human Mfn2 gene. Its TATA-less promoter contains a CpG island. In keeping with this, 5'-rapid amplification of cDNA ends revealed six transcriptional start sites (TSSs), of which TSS2 and TSS5 were the most frequently used. The strong CpG island was found to be non-methylated under conditions characterized by large differences in Mfn2 gene expression. The proximal Mfn2 promoter contains six putative Sp1 motifs. Sp1 binds to the Mfn2 promoter and its overexpression activates the Mfn2 promoter in VSMCs. Chemical inhibition of Sp1 reduced Mfn2 expression, and Sp1 silencing reduced transcriptional activity of the Mfn2 promoter. In keeping with this view, Sp1 and Mfn2 mRNA levels were down-regulated in the aorta early after an atherogenic diet in apolipoprotein E-knockout mice or in VSMCs cultured in the presence of low serum. CONCLUSION: Sp1 is a key factor in maintaining basal Mfn2 transcription in VSMCs. Given the anti-proliferative actions of Mfn2, Sp1-induced Mfn2 transcription may represent a mechanism for prevention of VSMC proliferation and neointimal lesion and development

The management system and the achievement of regulatory compliance of the OHSAS 18001 standard is mandatory in each company. Therefore, the collaborative group of the human talent management degree course has decided to design and implement an occupational safety system in the social state company Salud Aquitania; which is located in Aquitania Boyacá, and is made up of seventy employees, including 15 administrative workers and 55 care workers. This system aims to the physical, mental and social well-being of employees, not taking into consideration the kind of job they perform. The Project aims to assess, foresee and control continuously the risks in each department. It is necessary to take into account that to implement this occupational health and safety system there is a process of preparation, application, verification and assessment. It means, to identify the system planning, to set concepts and theories, to establish the use of the mixed research as the assessment approach, in which it is possible to collect accurate and assertive data, in order to take decisions when implementing the program. And in this way, keeping in mind the idea of a continuous improvement of the tools used to contribute to good work environment and personal and moral integrity of the employees, taking into account that the employer is in charge of providing safe and healthful spaces and the workers are committed to help to the success of the management system through self-care

Sentinels of Seabed (SoS) indicator: Assessing benthic habitats condition using typical and sensitive species

Indicators are key tools used to assess the ecological status of the environment for ecosystem based management. Anthropogenic disturbances produce changes to habitat condition, which include modifications in species composition and their functions. Monitoring a group of sentinel species (from a taxonomic and functional point of view) provides useful insights into benthic habitat condition. Here, a new indicator, Sentinels of the Seabed (SoS) is proposed to assess state of benthic habitats using “sentinel” species (species which are characteristic of a habitat and sensitive to a given pressure). The selection of these sentinel species has two stages. First, a ‘typical species set’ is computed using intra-habitat similarity and frequency under reference conditions. Second, the ‘sentinel species set’ is generated by selecting the most sensitive species from the typical species set. This selection is made using specific indexes able to assess species sensitivity to a particular pressure. The SoS indicator method was tested on six case studies and two different pressure types (trawling disturbance and pollution), using data from otter trawl, box-corer and Remote Operate Vehicle images. In each scenario, the SoS indicator was compared to the Shannon-Wiener diversity index, Margalef index and total biomass, being the only metric, which showed the expected significant negative response to pressure in all cases. Our results shows that SoS was highly effective in assessing benthic habitats status under both physical and chemical pressures, regardless of the sampling gear, the habitat, or the case study, showing a great potential to be a useful tool in the management of marine ecosystems.Versión del editor2,69
