    Detections of massive stars in the cluster MCM2005b77, in the star-forming regions GRS G331.34−-00.36 (S62) and GRS G337.92−-00.48 (S36)

    Large infrared and millimeter wavelength surveys of the Galactic plane have unveiled more than 600 new bubble HII regions and more than 3000 candidate star clusters. We present a study of the candidate clusters MCM2005b72, DBS2003-157, DBS2003-172, and MCM2005b77, based on near-infrared spectroscopy taken with SofI on the NTT and infrared photometry from the 2MASS, VVV, and GLIMPSE surveys. We find that (1) MCM2005b72 and DBS2003-157 are subregions of the same star-forming region, HII GRS G331.34-00.36 (bubble S62). MCM2005b72 coincides with the central part of this HII region, while DBS2003-157 is a bright mid-infrared knot of the S62 shell. We detected two O-type stars at extinction \Aks=1.0-1.3 mag. Their spectrophotometric properties are consistent with the near-kinematic distance to GRS G331.34-00.36 of 3.9pm0.3 kpc. (2) DBS2003-172 coincides with a bright mid-infrared knot in the S36 shell (GRS G337.92-00.48), where we detected a pair of candidate He I stars embedded in a small cometary nebula. (3) The stellar cluster MCM2005b77 is rich in B-type stars, has an average Aks of 0.91 mag, and is adjacent to the HII region IRAS 16137-5025. The average spectrophotometric distance of ∼5.0\sim 5.0 kpc matches the near-kinematic distance to IRAS 16137-5025 of 5.2pm0.1 kpc.Comment: 22 pages, 11 Figures, ApJ accepte

    Quercetin solubilisation in bile salts: A comparison with sodium dodecyl sulphate

    AbstractTo understand the bioaccessibility of the flavonoid quercetin we studied its interaction with bile salt micelles. The environmental sensitivity of quercetin’s UV–visible absorption spectrum gave information about quercetin partitioning. Two quercetin absorption peaks gave complementary information: Peak A (240–280nm) on the intermicellar phase and Peak B (340–440nm) on the micellar phase. Thus, by altering pH, we showed that only non-ionised quercetin partitions into micelles. We validated our interpretation by studying quercetin’s interaction with SDS micelles. Pyrene fluorescence and the quercetin UV–visible spectra show that the adsorption site for pyrene and quercetin in bile salt micelles is more hydrophobic than that for SDS micelles. Also, both quercetin and pyrene reported a higher critical micelle concentration for bile salts than for SDS. Our method of using a flavonoid as an intrinsic probe, is generally applicable to other lipophilic bioactives, whenever they have observable environmental dependent properties

    Sonic hedgehog specifies flight feather positional information in avian wings

    Classical tissue recombination experiments performed in the chick embryo provide evidence that signals operating during early limb development specify the position and identity of feathers. Here, we show that Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signalling in the embryonic chick wing bud specifies positional information required for the formation of adult flight feathers in a defined spatial and temporal sequence that reflects their different identities. We also reveal that Shh signalling is interpreted into specific patterns of Sim1 and Zic transcription factor expression, providing evidence of a putative gene regulatory network operating in flight feather patterning. Our data suggest that flight feather specification involved the co-option of the pre-existing digit patterning mechanism and therefore uncovers an embryonic process that played a fundamental step in the evolution of avian flight

    Using the Metagraph Approach for Addressing RDF Knowledge Representation Limitations

    This paper proposes an approach for addressing Resource Description Framework (RDF) knowledge representation limitations using an emergent graph model. The metagraph model is proposed to solve this problem. The formal definition of the metagraph model is given. Metagraph and hypergraph models are compared and it is shown that the hypergraph model does not implement the emergence principle. Textual predicate representation of the metagraph model is given covering all the main elements of the metagraph data model. RDF reification limitation and N-ary relationship limitation are examined. It is shown that the metagraph model addresses RDF limitations in a natural way without emergence loss. Proposed textual representation of the metagraph model allows clear and emergent description of the examined problems

    New high-resolution age data from the Ediacaran-Cambrian boundary indicate rapid, ecologically driven onset of the Cambrian explosion

    The replacement of the late Precambrian Ediacaran biota by morphologically disparate animals at the beginning of the Phanerozoic was a key event in the history of life on Earth, the mechanisms and the timescales of which are not entirely understood. A composite section in Namibia providing biostratigraphic and chemostratigraphic data bracketed by radiometric dating constrains the Ediacaran–Cambrian boundary to 538.6–538.8 Ma, more than 2 Ma younger than previously assumed. The U–Pb-CA-ID TIMS zircon ages demonstrate an ultrashort time frame for the LAD of the Ediacaran biota to the FAD of a complex, burrowing Phanerozoic biota represented by trace fossils to a 410 ka time window of 538.99±0.21 Ma to 538.58±0.19 Ma. The extremely short duration of the faunal transition from Ediacaran to Cambrian biota within less than 410 ka supports models of ecological cascades that followed the evolutionary breakthrough of increased mobility at the beginning of the Phanerozoic
